Amarissa could practically feel herself freeze at the mention of marriage. Had he honestly just suggested that? It was so ridiculous that if she had been able to react, she was certain that she would have perhaps laughed. That had to be a joke. Her and James - married. She could only imagine them making an attempt at playing family, getting married and having a child. Even if all the other issues weren't there, she had a hard time picturing her and James ever becoming married. She liked what they had - whatever it was, but well, she always had a hard time picturing herself married. And with kids.
But it couldn't gloss over the truth; she was an Auror. He was, for all purposes, dead. It was a thought that seemed to echo through her mind several times, before she realized that he was legitimately serious. He thought that getting married would be the proper solution to this problem, that it would fix it - well, at least start to fix it. Merlin, could he even be legally married again? Hell, he wasn't even legally alive again, Amarissa reminded herself. That would be so insanely difficult to explain.
And that, Amarissa wanted to point out, was almost the larger problem. Sure, being pregnant would be complicated. Having to explain that to her mother would be acutely uncomfortable. But having to explain to her mother that the father of the child was one James Potter? He wasn't just any resurrected individual after all. It wasn't like he was so random man that had returned from the dead, he was James Potter. Amarissa ran one hand over the front of her face again.
"James," she said slowly, not quite sure how to express the immensity of what was running through her head. After all, she didn't want to seem too terribly callous or insulting about this. "Somehow I don't think that will really help the situation any."
Her first marriage proposal, Amarissa couldn't help reflect, in some sort of twisted way. This definitely wasn't how she had envisioned things turning out. Ever. But then, how could she have anticipated anything remotely close? It was impossible.
