James believed what he'd said. They would find a way to make this work. They were obligated, bound by... he didn't know, natural law or something. Sure, it would mean changes. Any plans she had for the next few decades would be turned on their heads. Merlin, if she was actually pregnant, a lot was going to change. His entire life was going to change. Again. And hers, too. But James could contain his own desire to flip out, at least until he was out of earshot. He itched for Sirius' presence the way muggles talked about itching for a cigarette. He could wait. Later, maybe, when she was asleep or something, he could slip back to number twelve and either wake Sirius up or track him down at whatever pub he'd stepped out to. Not yet, though. Walking out the door right then and there seemed like the worst possible thing to do.
Still, it was a little encouraging that she didn't seem inclined to give him much of a fight. She had to know that he was right. This time she couldn't plead ignorance and she had no grounds to expect him to go along and just hope for the best. Emerging from the desire to make a joke out of anything he could arose the sentiment that if she thought he was stubborn before, she was in for a whole new world of it when it came to what he thought was best for his children.
"Let's just see someone here, just to find out if you are," he went on. "And if you are, then we can go to that friend of yours, just please not that godawful place." She had a friend, he knew, who she trusted - an older guy whose name he couldn't recall. Almost as an afterthought he added, "I mean, we'd have to go to Spain anyway, so I can meet your family."
It went without saying that if she was pregnant, he'd marry her. That was just what you did. It was the right thing for the child. It was the only respectable option, and that was all there was to it. And he wasn't going to drags his heels or try to get out of it. In what he viewed as a slightly selfish moment of self-pity he managed not to sigh as his thoughts turned to explaining everything to Harry. Gods, this was going to be messy.
