For an instant, she saw the sort of reaction that she had expected. There was a spasm of shock that ever so briefly passed over his face, and his hand wasn't quite steady around the second shot he was still holding. She wondered how well he was going to handle such an announcement, because in reality, there would be perhaps more issues for him if she was really pregnant than her. So many, in fact, that Amarissa didn't even want to start exploring how insanely problematic it would be. It just - It just couldn't be. It was a stark denial that she had clung to. And not thinking about it or coming to terms with it made it even more difficult for her to try and explain it to James.
But then, abruptly, he was grinning, moving in a bit closer to shorten the distance between them. This, Amarissa hadn't been expecting. And in truth, didn't really understand. Her eyes dipped down briefly to where his hand had landed. She could feel the warmth of it through her Auror robes and the thin shirt she was wearing underneath. Confusion, maybe a bit of being upset or even angry, that she could understand. Or him hiding his reaction entirely from her. All of that, she had come to expect, but he thought it was a joke? She remained unmoving in front of him, a sort of disbelief welling up in the center of her chest.
"No one." she answered, and her voice was low and a little softer than usual. She wasn't quite meeting his gaze, but had settled for a lovely little spot of wall behind him and to the right to focus on. "And I'm not kidding."
She wondered if he was going to staunchly refuse to believe anything she was saying. Denial was made a bit easier on his part, she figured. She also wondered if she had an obligation to try and make him believe; after all, she had given him fair warning.
"I'm going to Spain on Friday to find out for certain." she continued after a scarce moment. She managed to keep her voice completely level. In fact, it sounded quite distant to her own ears.
