"I'm okay." Amarissa confirmed, picking up the mug of hot chocolate that he had made and taking a sip of it. The warmth of it felt amazingly good.
She also was feeling too tired to strike up any sort of banter with him, to make any of her normal dry and just slightly sarcastic comments. Although she didn't feel particularly uncomfortable around James, it did seem as if their whole dynamic had been thrown off by what had happened in Spain. Because while she was maybe more relaxed as a result of exhaustion, less inclined to be insulting and snarky, he also seemed a bit more serious and reserved. She was used to him being teasing and what he considered debonair. It seemed as though every time they had been together, he had been up some kind of mischief or prank. The car, and, the drunken dancing and the the time in the bath. Drinking on New Years, and him getting thrown out of the bar. And the mistletoe on Chr-. It was just different now. She wasn't sure if she could explain why.
Vaguely, it occurred to her that he could still be angry. That emotion could be the reason why there was a tangible change in the atmosphere. Somehow, she just couldn't envision that being the imminent reason. Why bother coming over to ask if he was okay, or make her hot chocolate? Although, she thought wryly, it wouldn't be terribly amiss for him to have spiked it with something. But she didn't feel any tug of Veritaserum on her insides, or anything else for that matter. And what could be gained from a truth potion at the moment? If she had been a little more awake, a little more like herself, she would have been concerned at her lack of concern over a potential poisoning. But everything, from Spain and a bit before, had changed, and there was no denying it. She felt unsettled now, and completely uncertain of how to be a proper Auror again. She just kept waking up in the middle of the night, feeling scared. It would have been a ridiculous notion before. She knew how to handle herself. But someone had gotten far enough into her defenses to unhinge her. And who knew if they were truly gone? That was a line of thought that she quickly shut down. It was a fear that she hadn't expressed to anyone yet, but it was perhaps her greatest. What if she could be controlled now? What if she could be used against everyone?
"They took it out yesterday," Amarissa confirmed without any reservation about telling him. "Apparently they found a way, and we were lucky enough that it worked. That's where I was. I just got back."
She didn't know if he wanted any more detail than that. It wasn't as if there was much she could offer. Most of it was still a bit of a blur to her. All she had done really was sprawl out on a table, and then sprawl out on a bed for a bit during recovery. And then come home to sprawl out on her couch.
