It seemed that the cooler weather was bringing on a bit of a lag at the Hit-Wizard department in the Ministry of Magic because for nearly a week Theodore had been able to escape by six in the evening. He found it odd that many of the other Hit-Wizards were actually complaining about being done at a normal hour. Even the married blokes seemed a tad irked by it. Theodore would nod along and mutter his wishes that they would allow for some more overtime when he was really darting his eyes toward the clock and hoping he could depart even earlier than the day before. Wednesday evening was turning out to be the very same way. Theodore was even more anxious to get home today because he had a dinner guest coming by and he hadn't even really figured out what he was going to cook. When the boss came around at quarter to five and announced that there was nothing left to do for the day, Theodore rushed home.
If it wasn't for magic, Theodore was sure he would be absolutely horrible in the kitchen. One of his House Elves had been teaching him since he moved into his flat a few weeks earlier and while he was certainly not up to the gourmet level, Theodore was quite proud at what he had accomplished in such a short amount of time. It turned out that cooking wasn't very hard at all, it just took a bit of patience. At first the elf had been hesitant at teaching his master, but Theodore persuaded it by offering to let it stay with him for a few months longer than he had initially wanted. If he was honest with himself, Theodore knew he would probably never want to be without at least one house elf.
By the time he was cleaned up and ready to start cooking, there was only an hour and a half left before Daphne would appear. It only took him a few minutes of looking through his cupboards to decide on cooking Cornish game hens with garlic and rosemary and asparagus with cranberries and pine nuts for the side dish. He had prepared the very same meal two weeks earlier for his Aunt Gloria and she had loved it. Better to be safe than to attempt something new, he thought. As he went to work getting the game hens ready for the oven, the house elf worked on a salad. As he worked, Theodore tried to remember the last time he had actually spent any time with Daphne and realized that he could not recall. For a moment, he wondered if it was inappropriate to invite her to his flat for their first meeting after such a time spent apart, but he figured that if Daphne hadn't thought it odd then she wouldn't have agreed to it.
Time passed quickly and before he knew it, it was a quarter till seven. While the house elf cleaned up the mess Theodore made in the kitchen, he once again readied himself for company. It turned out that half of the lemon he had used on the game hens ended up on his nice shirt somehow. Just as he was done changing into a darker button-down shirt, Theodore heard a knock at his front door and went to answer it.
