James' nose always seemed to wake up first. He was hoping to awaken to maybe the smell of bacon or waffles, but instead he became aware of foreign sheets. Clearly, he was not in his own bed. A cautious arm scanned the vacant side of the bed. No Lily. He let out a heavy sigh, accepting the fact that the previous evening had in fact really occurred. And if he'd had any particular doubt, the dull ache of his face would have provided any necessary assurance. It wasn't as though it irritated him, he had needed it. He wasn't too lousy at holding his temper, but when he lost it, it tended to be explosive.
He wasn't yet ready to open his eyes, so he rolled onto his back. He had no idea where he was, but if Sirius was the one who laid him out, he knew he could trust to wake up somewhere safe. It took him a moment to realize he was not alone in the room. It was either Remus, Sirius, or both. Curiosity won out, and he cracked an eye open. There sat Sirius, seeming as though he'd been there all night. James gave a huff of a sad laugh before stretching his arms above his head.
"Was it entirely necessary to hit me that hard?" he asked, his voice teasing and devoid of malice as he let his body fall back against the bed.
