With a snort of a laugh and a cocked eyebrow of disbelief, James jabbed his wand at the cupboard. A stack of plates zipped out at something of a precarious speed, though it settled safely onto the table. There was something about having a house full of people that he found pleasantly settling. He reckoned it was because it reminded him of school, when there was nearly always someone else about, either in a bed or in a common room. After his first year at Hogwarts, when he returned home for holiday he'd been surprised to find his house unnaturally quiet with only his parents for company. No, he much preferred the unpredictable coming and going of guests that caused a clever young woman to appear with breakfast in the middle of the kitchen.
"Oh?" he quipped. Unable to resist a mild tease he mentioned, "Well if you don't want me interrupting your little brunch date, you should have left me sleeping."
He leaned around Ginny to snatch up a couple of slices of sausage. James liked to cook when the mood struck him, but since Lily was much better suited to fixing cocktails than dinner and Sirius seemed unable to resist the compulsion to char everything to crisp, it was a task James often took. That Ginny had arrive with full breakfast in tow was endearing indeed. Popping one slice into his mouth, he held the other to gesture authoritatively at Ginny.
"Now don't you go siding with him right off the bat," he cautioned with great inflated solemnity. "Chasers really ought to stick together - it's a sacred bond, you know."
He tossed the second slice of sausage into his mouth and gave her a wink as though they were sharing something of a private joke. Truly, James' heart was hung on Lily, but he considered it a matter of hospitality to flirt with nearly anyone who'd let him; especially when his wife so easily monopolized his attention when she was in the room.
