By Claire: Page one The Department for Magical Law Enforcement today published its annual report on war restorations and reparations. Considerable funds were amassed at the end of the war from the estates of Death Eaters and supporters of He Who Must Not Be Named, and the Ministry has put them to good use repairing the damage wrought over those years. The Committee For War Reparations reported an income of just over sixty thousand Galleons, down again on previous totals. Most of the current income comes from regular reparatory levies on trust vaults protected against total reclamation, although ten thousand Galleons did come from assorted capital claims. The Committee does not publish the names of those against whom claims were made.
The bulk of this year's expenditure (totalling nearly two hundred thousand Galleons) was spent on physical repairs, including to prominent sites such as the Ministry of Magic, Hogwarts School and Gringotts bank. The Committee has once again refused to provide detailed information on reparations made to the families of victims of Ministry violence, but twelve thousand Galleons were distributed to relatives this year. Expenditure is down all round, but of particular note is the money transferred to the Muggle government, which is at just 25% of last year's eighty thousand Galleons. A total of nineteen thousand Galleons (approximately one hundred thousand pounds in British Muggle money) was given to the Muggle government to continue repairs and restorations caused by the wizarding war. Thirty thousand Galleons went to charitable causes. The only increase in expenditure was a 7% rise in money paid out to house elves who have chosen to accept back-pay for the services they provide.
It is expected that there will be the usual outcry against the government's choice of charities and demands for full disclosure of the Death Eaters and families of Death Eaters who were levied for gold.
In a previous edition of the Prophet we referred to war widow and Grandmother of Harry Potter's Godson, Andromeda Black-Tonks by an incorrect surname. The Prophet apologises for this error and any inconvenience this may have caused.
