The first thing Neville noticed was the distinct smell of pine. It smelled nice. He rolled over in his bed and buried his head into a pillow. It took another three minutes for his brain to set off the alarm. This wasn't his bed. His eyes shot open and he fell out of the bed, scrambling backwards away from it. He backed into a wall hard, yelping as he did. This wasn't his room, either. Looked nothing like it, with wood floors and smelling so freshly of pine trees. Something was clattering outside, windy and loud. A storm, maybe. He wracked his brain. He didn't remember going to sleep, much less going to sleep in a stranger's house. That wasn't exactly an ordinary occurrence for Neville. The last thing he remembered was... the reaping ceremony. He hadn't been called. He'd been so relieved. He'd been leaving, heading back home and now... where was he? For several minutes, he just sat there, breathing, trying to keep himself from panicking. Okay, this wasn't terrible, he told himself. It was just a bedroom. Just one he'd never seen, ever in his life, and definitely hadn't gone to sleep in. Sure, no reason to panic there at all, nope. Slowly, he pulled himself to his feet. There was a door a few feet away from him. It wasn't even closed all the way, cracked open just ever so slightly. He peered through it but couldn't see anything in particular, certainly nothing that made him panic further. Taking a deep breath, he opened the door and stumbled through it without a second thought. |
