The train's distant call echoed for miles, extending to the far reaches of the tiny town nestled within the mountains. As it traversed the landscape Link found himself transported to a not so distant memory while he stared straight ahead and expressionless at the video game that played on without him, voices booming as gunfire shattered glass and its sound echoed in the headphones that hung around his neck. Troy was not coming back and though the truth of his friend’s suicide had surfaced more than a month ago, Link continued to grapple with the reality that his lifelong friend was no more. Closing his eyes he drew a breath and studied the darkness behind closed eyelids wondering if it was anything close to what Troy had last witnessed before throwing himself in front of the freight train. Startled from his pondering Link gazed towards the front door as his mother and some tall stranger wandered into the home. She tossed her keys into a bowl by the door and Link turned away from the couple, eyes fixated on the screen before him though he did not interact with others from the game, but merely busied himself with allowing his character to walk landscape of the game. Struggling to ignore his mother and her new friend Link finally exited from the game and stood, ready to leave for his bedroom when his mother called his name, mentioning something about dinner. </i>Huh?</i> He probably should have been listening “What?” He inquired, ignoring the man completely and focusing on his mother instead. Drawing upon past conversations had within the last few weeks with his mother Link knew very well that this so called friend was more than just a friend, he was as his mother put it, “dreamy in a mysterious way” which left Link wanting to eye roll. If this mystery man was anything like his own father, then the guy was just another douchebag who would end up breaking his mother’s heart, so Link focused very little energy in the man and instead kept his attention on his mother’s well being. He wished for her happiness, but her choice in men sucked and Link knew as much because his own father was nothing more than a sperm donor asshole who bailed on his mom before the first ultrasound. “I’ll just make ramen or something mom, don’t worry about it,” he offered when she attempted to pass money his way for a pizza. He wasn’t in the mood for pizza or any food for that matter, but he would pacify his mother in order to keep her from worrying. The blatant disregard for the man that entertained her fancy was obvious and no matter Link’s best interests to ignore him, his mother insisted on introducing him to her son. “Link, this Sean.” Her eyes sparkled and she smiled as if hopeful for a true connection to be made, but all that Link could muster was a sigh with a slight purse of his lips before running his hand through his messy curls. “Hey,” he replied simply before heading for the kitchen. |
