It was an understatement to say that Ethan was dreading the end of the summer. He knew that it was slightly insane to worry about something that wasn't going to happen for another couple of months but he couldn't help it. Cassie was going to be leaving him and the knowledge of that left a constant discomfort deep within his gut. He was doing his best not to focus on it, though. He kept telling himself that they had plenty of time and that he shouldn't squander a second of it worrying about what was going to happen. His best friend would have told him to live in the moment...
Which was probably why he was trying to spend as much time with her as he could. That wasn't to say he was suffocating her, though. He happened to think that he'd found just the right balance of being together and being apart. Take now, for example, he hadn't seen Cassie in, at least, forty-eight hours. They'd talked on the phone, of course, but things had been kind of hectic around the Douglass house and he hadn't been able to steal away.
Until now...
On his way over, he'd stopped off on the side of the road and picked some of the wildflowers that were growing along the ditch. It was probably a silly gesture but something inside of him said that Cassie would love it and that was really all that mattered to him.
He hid the flowers behind his back as he made his way up to her door. When she answered, though, he produced them with a great flourish and a wide grin.
"Pretty flowers for a pretty lady," he offered as charmingly as he could manage.
