Who: Claudia Thompson (Little Girls) and Christopher McMillan (Sugar Plum Tree)
Where: Outside the the Northwestern Baseball Team's Locker Rooms
When: May 16th, a few hours before the game
It had been a full week since Claudia had made her bold claim - to make Chris fall head over heels for her. There had been a fair amount of pouting on her part when he didn't immediately chase after her to declare his immediate love, because Claudia just wasn't used to not being instantly adored, to not being given whatever it was she wanted the moment that she wanted it. There were few things in this world that Claudia could charm her way into getting the instant she wanted them, but, unfortunately, the affections of one Christopher McMillan appeared to be one of those things.
She'd tried taking extra time to dress and do her makeup, tried dressing extra-sexy when she knew she'd be around him. She'd even made up some story about how she just didn't understand her homework, hoping to turn a tutoring session into a makeout session, like she'd so easily done with so many other boys, but he seemed to be perfectly immune.
It was a last bit of desperation, just before today's baseball game, that led her to get up early and make a big batch of cupcakes and it wasn't even just a part of her plan to win him over. No, Chris was her best friend, no matter what other desires she'd developed, and she liked to wish him luck on the days his team played, to let him know she'd be cheering for him.
Today, though? Today, she'd done something extra-special. She'd woken at the crack of dawn and spent the next several hours in the kitchen of the hotel they were staying at for the weekend's series of away games, working until she had a tin of chocolate cupcakes with white frosting and green sugar sprinkles. Claudia knew, probably better than almost anyone, that Chris had a sweet tooth, and it could very well be the last game of the season.. it seemed like a great idea.
She positioned herself just outside the locker room, hours before the game was to start, so she could be sure and catch him before he went inside, because good luck cupcakes were best served before a game, weren't they? Yes. So she leaned against the wall next to the entrance, chewing her lip (a nervous habit that she didn't let show very often) while she waited for him to show up.
--
To be perfectly honest, Chris didn't know why he was working so hard to resist Claudia's affections. He'd known her forever and, of course, he cared for her (even if he hadn't quite put a title those feelings).
Maybe he simply liked being pursued, maybe he took some secret pleasure from not giving her what she wanted the second that she wanted it... either way, it had been a full week and he'd yet to give into her pursuit.
Today was a great day. The weather was amazing and he paused several times in his walk towards the field, just enjoying how great it was to be outside, anticipating what was sure to be a great game.
His spirits were high. He was all but certain that he and his team were about to attain another victory and... what was this?
Claudia caught his attention as he neared the locker rooms and he smiled brightly.
"Afternoon?" he greeted as he dragged his free hand through his hair, mussing it up slightly. "You're out here a little early for the game," he grinned.
--
Did he have to look so damn good? Claudia thought secretly that it just wasn't fair that he had to be so good-looking, even at this hour. And he probably did that with his hair just to torture he, too, she decided.
"I wanted to wish you luck," she told him, smiling almost shyly (which was definitely unusual for her) as she held open the box of cupcakes so he could see the,
"And give you these..." She looked down at that, chewing her lip nervously. She'd been sure he'd love them earlier, but now? Now she felt like an insecure schoolgirl talking to her crush.
--
Chris had literally gotten out of bed, showered and put on clothes. He wasn't trying to look attractive but he wasn't ignorant to what it did to her when he mussed his hair like that. Such a simple action, you wouldn't believe how it could make the girls swoon.
"Sugar covered luck," he grinned brightly before dragging a finger through the icing on one of the cupcakes. "Thanks."
He pulled his finger quickly into his mouth, cleaning it of the icing. "Mmmm, tasty! You make these yourself?"
He noticed this shy act she had going but he dismissed it as just that, an act, something she was doing now that she'd decided that she would make him fall in love with her. Claudia wasn't shy; he'd bet his life on that.
--
No, Claudia wasn't normally shy, but this was new territory for her. This was something she really, really wanted, something she couldn't figure out how to get and.. it was Chris. She didn't know what had made her realize it, but she really wanted him. He was probably the one guy whose impression of meant the most.. and the only one who didn't seem to fall for her charms the way everyone else did.
And did he have to do that finger thing? Claudia swallowed hard as he pulled his icing covered finger into his mouth and she almost didn't even notice that he'd asked her a question.
"Er.. yeah, I did." Guh. She hated this. She hated how her mouth went dry and she forgot how to talk around him lately. "Mama's recipe. Completely from scratch, too, so they should be really good."
--
It was either a fingerful of stolen icing or... he could lick a cupcake. A finger definitely seemed like the lesser of the two evils, right?
"They are," he grinned again. "Quite yummy, indeed."
Before he thought about what he was doing, he raked his finger through the icing again and held it out to her. "See? Taste," came his quiet command.
Honestly, this time, he was innocent. He didn't really realize that he was instructing her to eat the icing off of his finger, the same finger he'd just had in his mouth. He was... sharing.
--
Now this.. this was something Claudia knew how to do, how to try and work to her advantage.
She stepped forward when he offered his finger to her, wrapping a small hand around his wrist as she oh so slowly pulled his icing covered finger into her mouth.
She sucked gently at his finger, taking her time, rolling her tongue over her finger tip and taking care to be very, very thorough when it came to getting all of the icing off.
"Very yummy," she whispered when she finally released that finger and she was looking up at him, a bit of lingering hunger in her eyes as she contemplated trying to kiss him again. It'd been a whole week. Maybe she needed to remind him of what he was missing?
--
No, Chris hadn't thought about this at all. If he had, even for a split second, he would've foresaw the torture he was about to put himself through.
As it was, he was standing there, blissfully unaware until Claudia's hand close around his wrist.
The second her small, thin fingers had closed around his wrist, he knew that he was in trouble. It took an act of extreme discipline but he watched, patiently, with a mildly amused expression, as she sucked every tiny little hint of icing off his finger.
He was a teenage boy, he would've been lying if he had said that he hadn't thought of other things but, through some act of complete self discipline, he managed to hold his composure until his finger was his own again.
What was good for the goose, right?
"Thank you for the yummy cupcakes," he mumbled, leaning in slightly as he took the tin out of her fingers. "I will think of you when I eat them," came an almost whispered promise. He paused slightly, studiyng her in that moment before adding, "You've just a bit of ... right there..."
Then, without explanation, he leaned forward and pulled her top lip between his, sucking at imaginary icing. "Thanks again," he mumbled before moving to brush past her and into the dressing room.
--
That had gone even better than she'd hoped. She was too stunned to react when he pulled her lip between his, beyond a sort of soft gasp that was almost a sigh. It wasn't quite a kiss, but it very nearly was and Claudia wanted to dance in triumph, even as he pulled away.
"You're welcome," she breathed, just loudly enough to be heard as he brushed past her.
She leaned there against the wall for a moment after he left, closing her eyes and reliving the moment in her head, running her tongue lightly over the spot where his lips had been and smiling.
After a week of nothing.. she had hope. Maybe it wasn't much, but.. she had some hope, enough to let her know all this effort was definitely worth it.
