Matt had been quite content with ignoring the boy until Lyla began answering him. How annoying. Couldn't the boy have waited ten minutes? Surely, he would've pushed her into the apartment by then.
It didn't please him in the slightest, but he gave into this conversation they seemed hell bent on having. Stifling a groan of disapproval, he pulled away from Lyla and leaned casually against the wall.
Getting caught by the boyfriend was awkward business. He never knew whether to stay or go... he didn't ever know what kind of reaction to expect from the guy... he hated getting busted by the boyfriend but not enough to stop fooling around with taken girls.
Had it been any other girl, he would've made his excuses and left her to deal with the clean up. With this one, though, he was stuck pretending to be sensitive and caring. After all, he had to play his cards just right or he'd be paying McMillan fifty dollars.
