Joseph's words were cut off as Hannah elbowed past him and flung herself into Matt's arms. A part of him knew what she was trying to do but he could tell from the way Matt was looking at him that it wasn't going to do any good.
He shifted a little when she pulled back to stand at his side. If anyone knew how horrible Matt's temper could be, Joseph did and he was definitely dreading the boy's reaction.
He almost winced at his best friends laugh... if you could call that a laugh. "Really, I was going to..." It didn't matter what he was going to do, did it? If nothing else, he knew that Matt certainly didn't care.
"Matt, really, I'm sor..."
Joseph should have seen it coming but he hadn't. Between his shifting and explaining, he hadn't even realized that his friend had pulled his fist back until it had popped him in the eye. He staggered back from the impact and groaned from the pain that shot through the left side of his face. His hand shot up to cover the already bruising flesh but he was also bracing himself for another lick.
When he heard him walk away, he stumbled back a bit to lean against Hannah's desk. "Fucking hell," he cursed, his hand still over his face and his eyes pinched closed as he willed the throbbing to stop.
Valentine's had been perfect until this moment. Oddly enough, this was not how he'd imagined things turning out.
