Who: Emma and David What: a phone call When: Saturday, January 19, 2008 - evening - It takes us a while to finish things... stupid time zones. Rating: PG? Status: Complete Log
As promised, David had every intention of calling Emma this weekend. The life of a med student was rough, but he found a bit of spare time in between studying and he pulled out his phone, dialing her number and smiling to himself as he waited for her to pick up.
It was silly but a part of Emma hadn't believed that David was actually going to call. They hadn't talked all that much since New Years Eve and she wasn't really expecting that to change. It was okay, though. She knew that he was painfully dedicated to his school work and she hadn't expected a handful of visits and sex to change that.
Imagine her surprise when her phone rang and his named appeared in the caller id. "Hey!" she answered, the surprise showing in her voice. "I was beginning to think that you had forgotten my phone number."
"Hey!" David was glad to hear her voice and that showed in his tone, though he shifted a little awkwardly at her comment and he rubbed at the back of his head as he let of a guilty chuckle. "Yeah... I'm sorry about not calling sooner," he apologized sincerely, "school's been insane and.. I've been missing you, though. It's really good to hear your voice."
Emma hadn't been trying to make him feel guilty. It had just been a comment and she wasted no time in assuring him that it was quite alright, that she understood. "It's no problem. School's been sort of hectic here, too." She'd really missed him but she wasn't going to admit that. However, she was grinning and her tone accurately suggested that she was very happy to hear from him. "So, how have you been?"
"Good.. you know.. kind of going crazy, because med school is insane, but.. good.." David was smiling against the phone as he shifted into a more comfortable position. "What about you, Emma? Spring semester treating you okay so far?" He grinned as he questioned her, enjoying a chance to talk to her again.
Emma was nodding. He couldn't see her but she was nodding... and smiling. "Things are going well," she assured him. "I'm glad to be back in Boston. I mean, I love Seattle but Boston feels more like home every day." She was sitting crossed-legged in the middle of her bed but she closed her laptop as she spoke, set it into the floor beside her bed and leaned back on her pillows. "There's never a dull moment when I'm here." Realizing she was babbling she laughed softly and shook her head. "You've mentioned twice that school is insane... it must really be kicking your ass..."
David nodded, laughing softly. "Yeah, it's... medical school. I swear, I'm going to kill Gavin for not properly warning me about how hard it is." He paused for a moment, shifting slightly again.
"You know.. I like Boston, too. It's MUCH closer to New York that Seattle." Another brief pause and he added, "speaking of which, when do you think I might have the pleasure of seeing you again?"
"I don't know," Emma answered in return, the smirk on her face obvious in the tone in which she was talking to him. "I suppose that depends on when you'll be able to pry yourself away from school work, doesn't it?"
"I've got a long weekend coming in mid-February," he answered smoothly. He hadn't quite realized it was so close to Valentine's Day, but it wasn't like there was any other girl he'd want to spend the time with. "Unless you've already got other plans, of course," he added, his tone a little teasing.
"Do you?" she questioned with a raised brow. "I don't know... mid-February. I might have to check my calendar. You know what a busy girl I am." Emma enjoyed being coy with him. However, she hoped that he knew she would never pass up on the opportunity to see him.
"I do," he confirmed softly, his tone having a slight seriousness to it that should have indicated he definitely did want to spend the time with her. "I know you're a busy girl, Em, but I'd love to spend the time with you if you've not already made plans.." He didn't think she'd pass up a chance to see him, but he didn't know if she'd be free and he wasn't going to ask her to cancel other plans for him, either.
Emma bit her bottom lip when his tone turned serious. She was growing far too attached to him and to mSean, for that matter. When they said that they missed her and said that they wanted to see her, her stomach flipped and hear heart went pitter-patter.
"I'd like to see you, too," she finally confirmed. "Just tell me when..."
Emma rolled from her back to her side with a little sigh and she couldn't stop a smile from lighting her face. She really needed to stop with this getting attached nonsense but... she'd worry about that later. Right now, she wanted to bask in what felt like an almost relationship.
"Friday.. the fifteenth," he told her, glancing at his calendar to double-check the date. He grinned as the realization dawned on him. "A little late for Valentine's Day, but maybe we can celebrate anyway.." Yes, he'd definitely have to plan something extra romantic for the weekend, now that he realized just what weekend it was.
He let out a soft sigh, then. "I should get back to anatomy.. it's not nearly as nice to focus on as you, but I've got an exam coming up..." Pause. "I'm looking forward to seeing you again, Emma.."
"Friday, the fifteenth," she repeated with a nod. "I'll be looking for you."
She frowned a little when he said that he had to get back to work. So much for feeling relationshippy, right? Well, it wasn't like she wasn't used to it. "I'll see you closer to Valentine's Day, then," she smiled. There may have been a brief thought about telling him that he'd better not forget her number between now and then but she dismissed it. "You study hard and do well, alright?" That was genuine encouragement. She knew how much school meant to him and she definitely wanted him to do his best.
"I'll call you again soon," he told her, sincerely meaning to make good on that. He hated having to let her go now and he didn't want to wait until that weekend to hear her voice again, no matter how it distracted him.
"I'll try," he half-joked, "but do you know how distracting it is to have a girl as amazing as you in my head when I'm supposed to be learning about medicine?" He was partly teasing, but it was true. His thoughts strayed to Emma Daly far too often and he wasn't quite sure what to do about it. Seeing her was bound to help, right?
"Alright," she answered, refusing to get her hopes up. If he called, he called. If he didn't, he didn't. Either way, she was going to survive.
"I'm sure you'll manage," she told him after a moment. "I'll see you, then." She fell silent after that but she didn't hang up. Instead, she waited for him to make the first move.
"See you soon, beautiful," he breathed, knowing he needed to hang up no matter how much he didn't want to. "You take care, too.."
He hated this. He didn't want to hang up and for the first time he found himself almost wanting something -her- more than his career. It was an odd feeling, almost frightening, and he pushed it away and he let out a soft "Goodnight, Emma," before hanging up the phone and heading off to take a shower so he could clear his head before getting back to his books.
"Night."
Once he'd hung up the phone, Emma put her phone on her bedside table. She really had to remember not to get attached. It was stupid and would only lead to trouble. After a few calming breaths, she pulled her laptop back into her lap and returned to what she'd been doing before he'd called.
