Brendan's face lit up at the mention of ice cream and Leah had a bitter thought that Jase was trying to buy some affection. She wasn't that jaded normally but the whole situation was just out of her control it felt like and she wasn't handling it very well.
"I was thinking more along the lines of somewhere private..." she said, but Brendan had bounded off to put the sunglasses away singing "I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ice Cream." Leah sighed and turned to Jase while the boy was distracted.
"I need to tell him on my own. It's... maybe you can get to know him for now?" she said softly. "And that'd be good, but it has to be dealt with carefully. He's only seven."
