The sound of Jase's voice didn't register at first. She was focused on finding Jase new clothing as he was quickly growing out if his. While she adored her son, he did have an interesting taste in fashion that reminder her slightly of his father. Which is perhaps why she didn't realize Jase was actually there, because it was just the thought of him after all. But he was. There. With her. And Brendan. Oh dear lord. Oh my fucking lord.
What was he doing there? Why wasn't he off hitting on some girl somewhere?
Her first instinct was to pull her son to her and behind her. Hide him from Jase, but he wasn't having any of it.
"Mom, what are you doing? I was looking at sunglasses. Mom, let go" he pulled at her. "Mom, what's wrong?" he finally asked, looking at her face, her eyes wide, taking her appearance in and suddenly himself getting scared of the stranger walking towards them, because he was scaring Brendan's mom.
"Hey you, stop scaring my mom. I'll scream, I will. Call for the police or something" he said threateningly. No one upset his mother. No one.
Leah shook her head. "Brendan, no... just" she gave him a quick hug and kissed the top of his head. "Go look at the sunglasses, I'll be all right."
"No. I want to stay with you" he said, stubbornly, glaring at this new man. Any other time Leah would love to hear those words come out of her son's mouth. Even now it made her heart swell.
"Listen to mommy, okay? You can see us from over there. If anything happens, you will see, okay? He's an old friend, I was just surprised to see him. He's not going to hurt me. He wouldn't hurt me" because she didn't think he would. Well not really. He could take her boy away from her and that would be just as good as killing her, but he wouldn't intentionally hurt her. It wasn't in Jase to hurt a woman.
