Snorting under her breath, she shook her head at him, biting back the comment that so wanted to escape her lips. Now? Hardly the time to make quips like that, especially considering what was sure to follow.
Stupid? Yes. Stubborn too, for that matter, but those two went hand in hand a good deal of the time, didn't they? She wasn't sure what she expected or what she wanted to happen. He wasn't the sort to actually show he was upset or anything or, you know, show much emotion. Period. Had she expected it to go well? Certainly not. But she hadn't expected it to hurt half as much as it did. Her tongue pressed against the back of her teeth before she spoke again, because as much of a mean person as Marlene could be, as much as she could act out and be blunt about other things, some things? Yeah, she just backed away from them and tried to go about doing them as simply as she could -- right now, for example. "Because... because this entire fucking thing is stupid and if you even think for a second I'd actually want to do something to hurt you, you're even more of an idiot than I thought, Nate." Sucking in a deep breath, she practically cringed at that last part of his statement. "I know it's not typically in your resume, I just want -- I hope -- forgiveness is an option here and we both know I'm not the sort to want or ask for that sort of thing."
Surprised? Not a bit. She didn't blame him. But that didn't keep it from hurting. Not at all. Biting down on her bottom lip to keep it from shaking, she closed her eyes tightly for a moment before opening them again. "Don't... please don't act like this," she said quietly. "I know you're upset and you have every right in the world to be angry at me and feel free to hate me to your heart's content. But, please. Don't do this." Shifting uncomfortably she took a moment to shrug and took one step back, shaking her head at him as, yes, she was fighting the urge to actually cry. "If I said some of the things I wanted to say, I'd make this even worse than it already is."
Hey, may have been a guy in her past life? But she was a girl now, an incredibly emotional one at that, even if she didn't always understand them.
