Tugging up on her dress, Marlene shifted her cellphone from one ear to the other, chatting animatedly with Ashleigh as she got herself ready. It was the first New Year's Eve in a really long time that she was genuinely looking forward to and was eager to start, but at the exact same time she was nervous and anxious and oh my GOD how was it that Troy always had this strange sort of effect on her? At the same time that she wanted everything to start, she didn't want it to because that would mean things would eventually end and... sigh. It was an amazing sort of feeling, really it was, and she didn't want to give it up or change it for anything in the world. It was a strange and unexpected sort of thing but... for once in her life, she was unbelievably, uncontrollably, and indescribably happy. He brought out the best in her. Made her more... comfortable to be herself -- sure, she didn't ever pretend to be something she wasn't, but most people? Most people saw her as this dramatic girl who couldn't have a sane reaction to anything and couldn't keep her damned opinion to herself. With him though, all of that melted away, and she felt much more natural. Much more relaxed.
Sitting on the edge of her bed, she draped her dark curls over one of her shoulders, bending over to slip on her shoes as she heaved a small sigh, frowning to herself just a little as she sat up again. Everything else in regards to her appearance was in place -- make-up was done, hair was in place, and her purse and jacket were laying on the bed, waiting to be picked up. Oh, she looked amazing, but she couldn't help fussing. It wasn't like it was an entirely dressy thing either -- just enough to look nice, but nothing overly so.
Sighing, she stood again, crossing her room as she rummaged around for any last minute things -- a quick spritz of perfume, a quick fix of the hair, a smoothing of the dress... it wasn't like her to be this critical of herself, but with the person she'd be starting the new year with? She wanted to look perfect.
