Ashleigh wasn't remotely confident about this visit. Not where her mother was concerned, at least. Sure, she expected things to go really well between Ed and her father bur she knew her mother far too well. Honestly, a part of her was afraid that he would leave this experience at a run and never look back.
Of course, her fears were quickly justified.
Alexandrea, Ashleigh's mother, nodded as he spoke and even gave the boy a friendly smile. The words that followed were quite the opposite, though.
"You're a football player. A popular one if I'm understanding correctly," she paused to take a sip from her glass. "Surely you would have no trouble finding a thinner, more attractive young lady. Why would you settle for one as ... homely as Ashleigh."
Matthew could hardly believe his ears and he stared dumbstruck at the woman across the table from him. It was no secret that Alexandrea didn't like either of them but... this? In front of her boyfriend, no less?
Unlike her father, Ashleigh turned her gaze away from the woman, focusing her complete attention to the plate in front of her, iwlling the ground to open up and swallow her whole.
