Mark tied off the open top of the bag of popcorn kernels and turned the heat up to a low simmer under the pot on the stove. Looking around, he wondered where on earth he could have put the - oh. There was the vegetable oil. Hiding behind the wine. Grabbing the offensive ingredient, he poured in just enough to cover the kernels, capped it, put a lid on the pot, and then shoved both the bag of kernels and the oil further back on the counter to make room for a huge wooden bowl. Pop! Turning his full attention back to the pot, Mark grabbed the handle and vigorously (but not aggressively) shook the pot back and forth over the flames, rewarded with more and more satisfying pops. After a short time, he lifted the pot from the stove and quickly cracked the lid over the bowl, letting the fluffy white popcorn spill into it. The pot returned to its previous treatment, and then he repeated the process, until every kernel was popped. Not a single one had been burnt to the pot.
Not many people may have ever pegged this "rich kid" as someone with such a mundane talent, but Mark was actually good in the kitchen; he found it quite enjoyable. This particular task he'd learned at his mother's side. Popcorn just tasted so much better this way! Just as he reached for the salt, the doorbell rang, and he grinned. Phoebe was like himself: prompt. Poking his head out of the kitchen doorway, he shouted, "It's open!" even as he salted the popcorn he wasn't looking at.
