What: Phone conversation.
When: Tuesday, September 11, 2007 - 7am
Rating: G
Status: Log. Complete.
Ashleigh called home every Sunday at 8pm on the dot. Of course, 'home' meant where ever her dad happened to be. He traveled a lot now that she was off in Boston, so, she always called his cell phone.
Usually, she told her dad about everything... classes, teachers, parties, friends, Sam... recently, though, she'd left out a certain male somebody that seemed to be holding quite a lot of her attention.
Honestly, she didn't know why she wasn't telling her father about Ed. Maybe it was because they'd only known one another a few weeks. Maybe it was because she knew that her father was super protective of her. Either way, she'd not once uttered the name of the star Boston College football player.
Which, now, she was almost wishing that she had...
Tuesday morning, far earlier than any of her other calls, she dialed her father's number and waited for him to answer.
Somehow, she was going to talk him into giving her tickets to Georgia. Somehow, she was going to do this without talking about Ed.
"Hello."
"Hey, Daddy. It's me, Ashleigh."
"I gathered that, Ash. It's early. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, Daddy. I was just calling to, you know, talk to you..."
"At seven in the morning?"
"I had to call before classes, didn't I?"
"Yeah. I... suppose so." Pause. "So... what'd you want to talk about?"
"Oh, I dunno. I guess I just missed you."
"Well, I miss you too, Ash." Pause. "Well, are you calling to tell me that you want to come home, then?"
"No."
"Yeah. I didn't think so.
"Schools going well. Still hating those English assignments but, you know how that is..."
"Yeah. That's what you were saying on Sunday."
"So, Daddy..."
"Yeah."
"I was thinking that it would be fun to go to the Boston College football game this Saturday..."
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah."
"That does sound like a lot of fun, Ash. Who are they playing?"
"Georgia Tech." Pause. "We've won all of our games so far. It's really exciting."
"Yeah. I saw that. That's great."
"So can I?"
"So can you what?"
"Can I go to the game this Saturday?"
"Ashleigh, you're all the way in Boston. You don't need my permission to go to a football game." Pause. "You haven't needed it since you were a freshman in high school."
"Yeah. I mean, I know that... but... I kind of need your money."
"My money? Are you running low? Is there something the matter? How are you already out of ..."
"Daddy, I'm not out of money yet. I will be, though, if I buy a plane ticket to Georgia out of my account."
"A plane ticket to Georgia? You've got to go all the way to Georgia to see a football game?"
"It's an away game."
"An away game?"
"Yes."
Extended Pause. "Who is he?"
"Who's who?"
"The boy you're going to see in Georgia."
"I'm not going to see a boy in Georgia. I'm going to watch a game."
"You expect me to believe that you're going all the way to Georgia to only watch a football game?"
"Yes."
Extended Pause. "Ashleigh."
"Daddy."
"Have you gone to the other football games?"
"One out of two."
"Why didn't you go to both?"
"I'd already made plans with a friend of mine?"
"They didn't want to go to the game?"
"No. It's Tommy. He was sick."
"Hmmm..."
"So can I go?"
"Are you going to bring this boy home to meet me?"
"There's no boy, Daddy. I just want to see the game."
"No."
"No? No, I can't go?"
"Not if you're going to keep lying to me."
"Daaaaadddy!!
"Assssshleigh!!"
"Pleeeeeeeeease!"
"If things get serious, do I get to meet this boy?"
Reluctantly. "Yes."
"You don't think going to Georgia with him is serious?"
"I'm not going to Georgia with him. I'm going to watch the game."
"Okay, Ashleigh. I'll transfer the money. If you're still spending time with this boy around Thanksgiving, I'd better hear plans to meet him."
"Thank you, Daddy!"
"I love you, Ash."
"Love you, too."
"Now, off to class with you. Let an old man get some sleep, eh?"
"Bye!"
"Bye."
Ashleigh hung up the phone, quite happy with how the conversation had gone. So, it was official. She'd definitely be going to Atlanta to watch Ed play football. Of course, that meant a stay in a hotel and... well, there was seeing Atlanta. She was seriously, seriously, excited.
The best weekend ever was in the making...
