Eyes on his dog as he fed him another carrot, he answered, softly, "Because I'm Pack Leader -- if he gets his food after me, from me, he respects me more; it also heightens our bond and makes him want to stay with me more, which means he'll fight harder to protect me, and to find me if I'm separated from him." He glanced at her. "We're family -- I don't eat if he doesn't, and he knows he can rely on me for help, and protection, and he gives the same back." He shrugged, then smiled softly at the dog, reaching out to tug Snap closer for a moment, and burying his face in the soft, silver ruff. Snap's tail wagged gently, and he leaned into the carress, head-butting his master, then lifting his head to lavish loving tongue-swipes across DP's chin, his black ears pinned back in delighted submission.
DP looked at her again. "Me and Snap -- we're mates."
