Lucia felt like hell. There was really no other word for it. Jack had left early that morning and she was glad, because not long after he had gone, she had started throwing up. She had managed to drag herself to work, having a conference call scheduled with UNIT that she simply could not miss. However, she had accomplished a grand total of nothing in the time since she had arrived. Coffee had been brought to her, but that had simply made her throw up in her rubbish bin and that had prompted Lorraine to drag her down to the medical bay for a check up. After all the usual avenues had been dealt with, Lorraine had broached a subject that had clearly made her uncomfortable, given that this was her boss she was speaking to. The word pregnant had just about made Lucia fall off the table but she had consented to the blood test if only for the peace of mind of knowing it was negative. However, a few hours later Lorraine had delivered the news. It was positive. She was pregnant. The news itself had caused her to throw up yet again and now she was sitting at her desk with her head resting on the cool wood. This was why she had been so tired lately, Lorraine had explained, and why she had been craving strawberries all of a sudden when she had never really liked them before. It was all too much to take in, and god only knew how Jack would react when he found out. Of course, working in a small incestuous group such as Torchwood, it didn't take long for the news to spread. Lucia couldn't bring herself to care yet. The whispers started the second he walked in the door. They were giggling and pointing, giving him odd looks and staring. Lorraine walked over to pat him on the back and he was wondering just what the hell was going on. One of the boys just started outright laughing when he walked by and he crossed his arms over his chest as he watched this. "Okay, what's going on?" he asked Lorraine who just gave him a sympathetic look while smirking [how she managed that was a mystery] and pointed towards Lucia's office. He raised a brow at Lorraine then looked up at the office. What was going on? "Um. Yeah ... " well then. He started up the stairs towards Lucia's officer and once his back was turned the whispers and giggles started again. He knocked on the wall beside the door, peeking in to see Lucia sitting at the desk with her head down. "Lucia?" he asked, walking in and shutting the door behind him. Oh god. He was here. How the hell was she going to tell him? She pushed herself off the desk and leaned back in her chair. "Hi. How'd you go?" she asked, looking pale and rather shaken as she gazed up at him. She didn't feel quite as sick as before, but that was probably because there was nothing left to come back up. Her gaze skimmed over him as it often did when he returned, to find any bullet holes in his shirt, or blood stains from wounds that would have healed already. And that didn't get past him for a second. He tilted his head and frowned a little, watching her. He really was wondering what the hell was going on now. "Well, I got away with a swipe. The boys have a weevil and a blowfish in the car ... " he shifted and looked at her, reaching to slide a palm over her forehead. Was she sick? "Are you alright? You don't look well. You should probably go home ... " Lucia snorted at that and reached up to pull his hand away from her forehead. "Can't stay home for the next nine months," she said ruefully, her gaze rather wary now as she gazed up at him. "I'm not sick. I'm pregnant." Bluntly was the only way she could share the news right now. There was no way to soften something as shocking as this. And to say Jack was stunned was perhaps putting it mildly. The look on his face could be easily described as shocked. "You're -- " and he looked down at her stomach. He really couldn't help it. He then turned his eyes back to her face. It wasn't exactly the worst surprise ever. He supposed it was better than sick. No, it was better than sick. " -- wow. And ... " he had something to say but he couldn't think of it. So he laughed a little. " ... wow. That's ... " really, he was stumbling but not in a bad way. " ... amazing." That really wasn't the reaction Lucia had been expecting. She had no idea what she had expected though as she had been too caught up in her own shock, but she hadn't expected him to think it was amazing. "No, it's not amazing, Jack," she argued, reaching up to tiredly rub her head. "It's...terrifying and frightening and it's not supposed to happen! I'm on the pill, for Christ's sake." She was not supposed to fall pregnant to her lover who also happened to work for her. She couldn't deny (to herself at any rate) that she had feelings for him, strong feelings, but this went above and beyond what she had been expecting to happen between them. Well, it wasn't the worst thing in the world. At least not to him. And when she said that, he raised a brow, crossing his arms over his chest. He knew for a fact that if he had reacted that way, she would've hit him and sent him out. He had never been around a pregnant woman before, so he wasn't sure when the hormones kicked in or whatever. He slid his hand against the back of his neck. "Okay, well how am I supposed to react? Like it's the worst thing in the world?" he was just trying to get his ducks in a row here. He wasn't entirely clear on how he was supposed to feel. "So what do you want to do then." "It's too late now," Lucia moaned, leaning forward to rest her head in her hands. "What's done is done. No turning back now. Oh God." Her head was back down on the desk again as she moaned feebly. "I just wish I didn't feel so sick. I've been throwing up all morning." She would probably be feeling more positive if she didn't feel like death warmed up. Then again, she was still in shock over the news so positive was probably stretching it. Jack didn't know how she wanted him to react or feel or what. It wasn't the worst thing in the world and he suddenly felt too emotional for words about the whole thing. He cleared his throat and held up a finger. He moved down towards the kitchen, getting some glares and snickers. "One day you're going to find your coffee poisoned, watch it," he murmured as he dug around. He picked out some saltines then made his way back towards Lucia's office -- but not before hitting one of the boys hard. "Try these?" he said to her once he was back. "It absorbs the stomach acid that makes you feel sick ... " Lucia looked up suspiciously when he held out the saltines but took one anyway. "How do you know so much about it?" she asked, and took a bite, chewing slowly so as not to upset her suddenly sensitive stomach. She hated being sick and the prospect of feeling this way for months on end was not a pleasant one. It was so bad that nothing else even had an impact on her right now. Not her work, not the reactions of the others, and even Jack's reaction had yet to fully sink in. "I don't, it works for the stomach flu, so I figured that it'd work for this," he remarked and looked at her. Well, he did have that one incident on that strange sex planet where he'd gotten pregnant, but some things were just best left unsaid. "Oh. Right." That made sense and was something Lucia should have figured out herself, but her mind refused to cooperate. She slowly ate the saltine, gradually feeling better once she had something in her stomach that was going to stay put. "Thanks." She looked marginally better, but still not great. "So apparently this is why I've been falling asleep so early lately," she remarked, having previously assumed she was working too hard as she did have a tendency to push herself. Jack nodded some and looked at her, moving to lean against her desk, watching her over. He had never even thought it for a second. She had said she was on birth control so they hadn't really taken too many other measures to be careful, but they weren't kidding when they said that nothing was foolproof. "And here you thought you were just working too much." Most of the time, they hadn't had time to stop and consider other measures in their haste to be together. Lucia had assumed that her birth control pill was enough anyway, but apparently not. "Yeah," she agreed, laughing softly and sighed wearily. "You're happy about this, huh?" Lucia was still reeling from the news, because there had never been a question about what she would do, so she had been faced with the enormity of it almost immediately. Her hand went to her stomach, which still showed no sign of what was hidden within, but it was their child. It still seemed impossible as she gazed up at Jack. Jack couldn't help the smile that crossed his face when she said that. He nodded a little. "Yeah, I mean, I'm still reeling from it, but yeah ... it's definitely not the worst thing in the world," he said, finally crossing around her desk to stand in front of her. He slid his hand down over hers. What the human body could do in creating life was fascinating to him and knowing that this amazingly strong woman was having his child was the most amazing thing in the world. His hand covered hers and Lucia finally found the strength to smile at him in wonder. They were having a baby and while it was unexpected, she couldn't exactly say it was unwanted. Jack clearly wanted it, and Lucia was coming around to the idea. "You're not going to let me go out into the field anymore, are you?" she realised, knowing that despite being the boss technically, there was no way she was getting past him if he decided she was grounded to the Hub. Jack laughed some and looked at her. "Can I stop you?" he said and looked at her, grinning some. He slid his fingers low over her abdomen then. It really was amazing. He had been having a horrible night and now things had just been flipped on their ear. It was the best sort of news in the world. He didn't have any children [that he knew of] so this was definitely special for him. "I didn't think you'd give me much choice," Lucia replied, watching his face as he touched her stomach, wondering if he was just going to get worse as it grew. Oh god, she thought but thankfully prevented that thought from being spoken aloud. He was excited, and she didn't want to ruin that for him simply because she was scared of what this all meant. It was going to change EVERYTHING and she wasn't prepared for that at all. "Well, as if you'd actually listen to me," he said and smiled at her. He shifted some and tilted his head a little. He knew that it was a lot right now and it wasn't that he wasn't afraid himself. He knew what this meant. He inhaled slowly and removed his hand, sliding them in his pockets as he fought the urge to keep touching. "True," Lucia acknowledged with a slight smile. "You know what you said about going home? I think I'd like to do that now. I'm not going to get anything else done today and it's pointless to pretend that I am." All she wanted to do was go to sleep now that she had stopped fighting it. Jack smiled some and nodded a bit. "Yeah, okay, I'll get your coat and we can go on," he said and started out the door to more snickers and laughs. "I swear to God, I'm going to poison your coffee, it's not funny," he muttered at them as he passed. The snickers and laughter died the instant Lucia stepped out of the office and she glanced around at them suspiciously but as everyone was studiously working, or at least pretending to, there was little she could do. "Alright, Lorraine and James, you're on duty tonight. Call us if you need us but please don't need us." "There's some weevils and blowfish for you in the SUV, James," he said and that killed the laughter right away. He did smirk a little and nodded some, moving towards the door to grab her coat and his own. Lucia pulled on her coat as she followed him into the lift and once it was on, she slipped her hand into his. "So," she asked as the lift started moving. "Where does this leave us?" They had gotten closer in the past few months, but a baby radically changed all of that and Lucia was feeling rather vulnerable now. She was the one carrying this baby and even though she doubted he would, it was still possible for him to walk away. Jack had entertained the idea of going further with their relationship when he was here by himself but he honestly hadn't really planned anything concrete. Even though they knew where they stood, it was still often very delicate with them. Now that she was pregnant -- a fact that scared and excited him all at the same time -- he was having to give serious thought to those ideas he was having before. "I'm not going anywhere if you're worried about that." That was really what she had been getting at. Hearing him say that he wasn't going anywhere. "Okay," she replied, feeling a bit better now. She wasn't the type of girl who expected a marriage proposal just because she was knocked up, but she did want to know that he was planning to stick around. He had wanted to marry her before she got pregnant, but now there was just something about it that made it more real. He hadn't played house in a long time and he'd lost his last wife to childbirth. So he was really nervous about it, but she seemed stronger than Evelyn for some reason. Maybe it was the Italian genes. He started out into the parking garage, his hand still in hers. The drive back to her place was quiet and Lucia relaxed in her seat as Cardiff sped by. She closed her eyes briefly once, but with the movement of the car it just made her feel sicker so she opened them again, watching the cars moving around them. "Lorraine said she'd do a scan for us in a couple of weeks," she remembered. "It'll help us figure out exactly how far along I am since I couldn't remember the date of my last period." It just wasn't something she took notice of really. It was a nuisance and they had been busy lately and she just couldn't remember. Jack looked at her and drove slowly as to not make her too sick. He smiled a little and nodded some, pursing his lips together. "Okay, that'll be good," he said and pulled into her driveway. He turned the car off and walked around to her side to help her out. "I'll make you some tea when we get in the house."
