Summary: A little talk down by the riverside. No real spoilers.
The Sanzo party, with their two western guests in tow, rode down a winding trail through the forest. They stopped near one of the larger trees and made a quick camp under its shade, taking a brief respite needed by all. As the others ate lunch, some more voraciously than others, Sanzo noticed the absence of the blue-eyed westerner. Scanning the area, he glimpsed a flutter of blue and white robes disappearing amidst the nearby trees. Curious, the monk rose to follow.
The farther in that the monk traveled, the louder the sound of flowing water became. Soon, Sanzo saw Hazel crouched at what appeared to be the edge of a river coursing through the rocks and sand. The cleric had taken off one of his white gloves, and had leaned down to dip his naked hand into the water, feeling its gentle flow. Hearing approaching footsteps, Hazel turned partly to look up at the monk, who was pulling a cigarette from the pack he now held in his hand. “It’s lovely, isn’t it? The river, I mean,” Hazel remarked.
Sanzo took a puff of heated smoke. “It doesn’t look any different than any of the other rivers I’ve seen before.” He frowned as Hazel leaned back over to place his hand into the clear blue water. “Don’t lean over too far. I don’t want to have to haul you back out when you fall in,” he warned.
Hazel grinned, speaking to Sanzo as his gaze was still held by the shifting current before him. “I did that once when I was a boy. I was near a riverbank like this one, and I thought that I saw something sparkling below the water. I reached for it, and ended up falling in and being carried downstream.” His smile faded as he continued. “I remember how my master was running along the river’s edge, trying to keep up. I ended up clinging to a branch downstream, and he was able to reach down and get me out.” Hazel cast his eyes up at Sanzo for a moment. “He was furious, but the kind of furious that comes from almost losing someone.”
Sanzo was silent a moment before he spoke. “Judging by what you’re doing now, it doesn’t seem like you learned your lesson.”
Hazel chuckled as he rose from his knees, dusting off traces of soil as he turned to the other man. “I suppose you’ve got a point there. But you see, I’ve always been the type to get too close to dangerous things like this.” He cast his gaze back at the shimmering river, the cool breeze carried from across the stream tossing his hair. “But sometimes, they can be so beautiful that they tempt you to dive in and drown.” Then he fixed the monk with eyes as clear a blue as the flowing water behind him. “And sometimes, you don’t even think that you’d mind.”
Sanzo eyed him a moment before turning to walk back toward the others, muttering something about strange westerners. As Hazel caught up with the monk, he could see the fading remnants of a smile.
