Part Four
The ship sped onward toward land, Conrad waiting anxiously on deck. The sun was climbing in the sky in the early morning hours, and landfall was visible, but distant. Conrad sighed, a worried expression on his face. He wondered if Yuuri was alright, wherever he might be. He soon heard a pair of familiar footsteps approaching.
“No matter how long you stand there, the ship will only go so fast,” the deep voice of his older brother soon said from beside him. “You should come down to get something to eat. We’ll all need our strength for what’s ahead.”
Smiling at Gwendal, who watched over him in his own way as always, Conrad turned away to look at the sea. “I know, Gwendal. I don’t have much of an appetite this morning, though.”
Gwendal placed a hand on the railing in front of him, following his brother’s gaze out to the distant port city. “His Highness seems confident that Adelbert won’t hurt the Maou,” he started, hoping the words of the boy who was usually right in his suppositions would comfort his younger brother somewhat.
“Yes, he does,” Conrad agreed. However, the definition of ‘hurt’ that Murata was thinking of was likely different than Conrad’s. He tried to conceal his concern behind a façade of pleasantness, but his mind was troubled. Conrad had no doubts actually that Adelbert would rather give up his own life before he allowed any harm to come to the boy at this point. Apparently, Adelbert had decided to accept the fate that Julia had been dealt after all, but this had ended up very different than what Conrad had in mind when he’d spoken to the blonde about it. He frowned. No, Adelbert wouldn’t hurt Yuuri in the usual sense of the word, but it would be tempting for the blonde to have the thing that he’d obsessed over for two decades beside him again. That was likely the purpose of the kidnapping to begin with. And Yuuri was such a kind person. He was young and gentle. Easily manipulated into something he thought would help another. Conrad felt Gwendal’s eyes on him as he dropped his own to the deck, absently staring at the area near his boots. He balled a hand up into a trembling fist at his side. He’d never forgive Adelbert if he…
A hand, firm and reassuring, laid itself onto his shoulder. Conrad looked up at his brother, the wind tossing the locks of hair that framed his face, his expression stern as always. But the deep blue eyes that gazed into his spoke of gentler emotions.
“We will find the Maou,” Gwendal told him with a certainty that Conrad wasn’t sure he could have. “It’s only a matter of time. The boy has been in worse situations before and come out unscathed.”
Conrad smiled at him thinly, not trusting himself to speak, but the strength of what he saw held in Gwendal’s eyes made him believe his brother’s words.
