Sam gave him a slight smile. It was strangely comforting that he was just as literal and straightforward as a human. Though she supposed that was to be expected; having his powers gone hadn't changed his personality before. Nevertheless, signs of familiarity between states of being-- and also between worlds-- were incredibly comforting to see every time they popped up. "Maybe not," she said, "but I've been through enough similar experiences to know what it feels like."
Hence the empathy. He may not have seen the point of it, but it was a basic facet of her personality; it wasn't something she could turn off. She hoped it was something other versions of her had as well, but she had no real way of knowing for sure. Not unless one of them showed up here.
And of course, as he was reminding her, there was the matter of dealing with parts of herself that even she did not know about. Did she want to deal with memories of hell or being soulless? Not really, and she had been perfectly content (well, alright, mostly content) with the idea that those memories were gone. But now that she knew they were not so much gone as blocked off, she was suddenly all too aware of them. He was telling her not to push at the wall, but that was like telling someone not to think about a pink elephant; they always, without fail, started to imagine pink elephants. Although she wouldn't say that she was so much pushing at the wall as trying to feel for it and see if it was really there. That was probably just a technicality, though; it still wasn't likely to be a good idea.
"I'll try," she said. That was probably about as much as she could promise. "What do you think the chances are that it'll come down on its own anyway?"
Even as she said it, she felt a sense of déjà vu. Had they already had this conversation? Or had she had a similar one with someone else? If things kept coming to her in foggy wisps like this, it was going to be really hard to keep her naturally curious and probing mind from attempting to find the information that it seemed like it should already have.
