Like a bird upon the wind
who: Alanna & Lucas
what: Swimming fun
when: Saturday Late Morning
where: Alanna’s house
warnings: Bikini!!
Alanna finished tying the little bow in the front of her swim suit and looked at herself in the mirror. Her mother as usual had purchased something Alanna herself would never have bought. A bikini. Alanna had tried in vain to find a one piece but to no avail.
Whatever. She was just hanging out by the pool with Lucas for the day. Both of her parents were gone wherever, which was pretty much par for the course, so Lucas and she had the house to themselves. She bit her lip as the doorbell rang. That would be him. Adjusting her suit once more she quickly trotted downstairs and opened the large door with a smile. “Hey, come on in.”
Lucas had pulled on an old pair of swim trunks and a t-shirt and packed his empty backpack with a change of clothes and headed over to Alanna’s house. It was huge, but he hadn’t expected much less considering she attended the private school and had to pay that massive tuition. But what impressed him more than the house was the girl who answered the door. He flushed a little and gave her a little smile. “Hey.” he replied before stepping inside the house, wiping his feet on the front mat before he could forget.
Alanna was really excited. It was the first time she had a friend over in years. It was the first time she had a real friend in years. “Um well, welcome.” she said with a blush a bit nervously. “Make yourself at home. Pool’s out back.” Her house was a border line estate. They even had their own tennis court. Alanna didn’t really care about any of it, but she was glad they had the pool so she had an excuse to invite Lucas over. It was one of the last warm days of summer.
He went ahead and removed his shoes there at the door not wanting to mess up her nice clean house. Tucking his socks in as well, he thanked god that his feet didn’t smell like ass or something equally disgusting. “Thanks for inviting me over.” he told her with a smile. “I was bored out of my mind at home.”
Alanna smiled at him as he took off his shoes. “I was bored too. I’m here alone so it’s nice to have company.” She led him through the house. It was a good few minutes till they got to the back. The pool was huge with a diving board and a jacuzzi connected to it with a water fall. It was pretty upscale. “Here we are.”
So they were entirely alone? Interesting. And something that definitely made him even more nervous. Walking through her house made him realize just how small his own was. “How do you get around this place without getting lost?” he asked her as he glanced out over the pool, jacuzzi and waterfall. “It’s huge.”
She blushed a bit as she kicked off her flip flops then opened her denim shorts and slid them down to reveal her bikini bottom. “Maps, though I think we may soon be upgrading to GPS.” she said with an impish smile, her blue eyes dancing.
The words earned her a smile, but the smile flickered out into his mouth dropping open when she pulled her shorts off. Dear god in heaven, an angel must have fallen to earth. He managed to close his mouth before she looked at him and he gave her a smile as he moved his hands to the hem of his shirt and pulled it up and off. Tossing it aside with the rest of his things, he looked at the water and back to her. “Ever seen a bird swim?” he teased.
Alanna really didn’t have a clue how she looked. No boy had ever showed her any interest before so she assumed she wasn’t pretty. Of course, Lucas was certainly something to behold. She snuck a glance at his chest before looking back to his face. “A duck is a bird.” she said with a giggle.
“Fine, have you ever seen a barn owl swim?” he asked her, a little smirky smile on his lips as he moved towards the pool. He stood at the edge of it and moved to sit on the ledge. “I haven’t been swimming in forever. I hope you’re a certified lifeguard.” he teased.
She watched him, feeling a happy warmth in her chest that was a bit foreign. “Don’t worry, I’m a strong swimmer.” Alanna dashed to the pool and with a running leap she jumped in doing a cannon ball, getting him all wet from the splash before coming up with a laugh, her blonde hair hanging in heavy wet strands around her face as she grinned at him.
“Oh you’re such a brat.” he told her when she resurfaced. “Maybe I don’t like being splashed. It ruffles my feathers.” he teased before slipping off the edge and into the water only to splash her back.
Alanna laughed as he splashed her, brushing her hair back. “Do I need to get you some swimmies?” she asked teasingly, already having a great time with him. Lucas made her feel like she could just be herself, tease and smile. It was nice.
“No, I think I’m good. If I start to drown I’ll just climb up on top of you and use you as a floatation device.” he teased back, winking at the girl.
“Remind me not to get in a ship wreck with you.” she said with a grin, swimming in circles around him. “We have an indoor poor too. It’s smaller than this one, but we can swim all winter of we want to, get you ready for next summer.”
He chuckled at her first comment, but raised a brow at the second. “You’ve got a pool inside your house too?” he asked. Apparently she had even more money than he thought. “Your house makes mine look a little like a closet.” he admitted. “You should be glad you don’t have to clean the whole thing. It would take days.”
She stopped swimming in circles around him, treading water in front of him. “Your house is lovely.” she said truthfully. “You have a home. I just have a big empty house.” In her eyes was that sadness he had seen the first day he met her. Alanna had everything she could want but nothing she needed.
“It’s not empty.” he told her, shaking his head a little. “It’s got you in it, so I’d say that makes your house way better than mine.” he murmured, a smile spreading over his lips. “I might have a ‘home’, but my mom works all the time so we can’t really enjoy it together much.” he admitted. “I guess that’s why I suck it up and deal with busting my butt in school. Makes it easier to get a good job and make sure she doesn’t have to work so hard anymore.”
Alanna listened to him talk and realized the grass was never greener on the other side. “You’re a really good person, Lucas.” she said with a soft smile. “You’re going to get far in life and be happy.” Alanna would never have to worry about things like money, but she also wouldn’t have the satisfaction of knowing she worked for something. Maybe some day she would just forsake the life of a rich girl and be like everyone else.
“I try to be a good person.” he told her with a nod. “So hopefully my work pays off. Can’t really say where I’ll end up but I hope it’s some place nice.” he murmured. “I think you’ll probably end up someplace nice too. With or without this house.”
“For me it’s less where I end up and more who I end up with.” she said, laying in the water to float on her back and look at the sky. “When I grow up, I want a nice little home with a wonderful husband that I love and who loves me and with beautiful children...I want a family.”
“Are your parents the sort that want to pick who you end up with or do you get some sort of say?” he questioned, unable not to be a little curious. He wondered how things like that worked with the more affluent people around town. “You’re a pretty girl, I’m sure you could have any guy you wanted...” he added because maybe she needed to hear it.
“I’m sure my parents would love for me to marry one of the boys from school and be a good little trophy wife.” she said with a hint of annoyance in her voice at the thought. “I don’t want to be with someone because I’m Alanna Kingsly...I want to be with someone who loves me for just being Alanna.” Her parents probably already knew who they wanted her to marry, but Alanna would have none of it. She refused to become her mother.
“I’m sure there’s a guy out there that’s perfect for you.” he told the girl. “You’re more than just a number on a bank account.” he pointed out. “I like you because you’re sweet and you’re funny and you don’t care what people think. A lot of people don’t have those qualities. Especially around school.” he admitted.
Alanna rolled over in the water, wetting her hair back before facing him again. She smiled, a light blush on her cheeks. “Thank you...I like you cause you’re not like anyone else I’ve ever met. You’re real.” she said softly, looking at him with those startling blue eyes of her.
“Real weird.” he told her with a wide grin. “I mean I do turn into a bird. Can’t be to ‘real’ considering I’m more like a fairytale. Guess I’ll just have to be your happily ever after.” he teased.
She laughed and gently splashed him. “Turning into a bird makes you cool.” she said. “And I even have a princess dress and a tiara, if we wanna go the fairytale route. I’m sure we can find you a white horse and a knights shield somewhere and you can rescue me from my lonely tower.”
He laughed at her words and shook his head. “So long as I don’t have to wear those knightly skirt things that I see in all the Disney movies, I’ll take on that quest, your majesty.”
Alanna giggled and swam to lean against the wall next to him. “I think my seamstress can handle that.” she said, her eyes dancing. “We’ll make you a nice Prince Charming outfit and I’ll be your Cinderella.”
“Guess you’re going to weasel me into playing Prince Charming for Halloween then, huh?” he asked her. He didn’t think he’d particularly mind if it meant that she’d be his Cinderella for a little while. Even if he only got her til Midnight, he thought he would be more than happy with the bit of time he did get.
She grinned widely. “Well, the school does have a Halloween dance that’s a masquerade ball. One of the biggest social events of the year.” She of course, had never attended, but being on Lucas’ arm might give her the courage. “It’d be pretty funny.”
“You’d go with me to that?” he questioned. “I mean... would you want to? I’m not much for social gatherings, especially with a bunch of people that I don’t really fit in with, but... if you’d go with me, I’d take you.”
Alanna smiled at him and patted his shoulder. “I’ve never actually gone but....I’d go with you.” she said somewhat shyly, glancing downward. “I’d love to go with you.”
“So it’s a date then?” he questioned, a smile spreading more across his face at the thought of it. Even if it would mean dressing up and being surrounded by people who’d rather be around a bug than around him.
Her cheeks went bright red and she nodded. “It’s a date.” she said and her heart fluttered in her chest. Even if it was two months away, she had a date! She had never had one of those before.
He smiled a bit more broadly. “Awesome.” he murmured. “Now hopefully I clean up nice enough to fit in.” he teased. “Think I could use a haircut?” he teased.
Alanna laughed and reached up to ruffle his long, wet hair. “Nah, I like your hair.” Alanna liked everything about him. “I’ll take care of the costumes, though you’ll be forced through fittings.”
“I couldn’t make you do that.” he told her. “I’ve got some money, I can pay for my costume.” He had a job after all and he wasn’t the sort that liked to take handouts, no matter how nice the gesture might be.
“Nonsense. I have a ridiculously large allowance I never use. And I asked you so it’s up to me.” She poked his nose. “No arguments. When you take me out, then you get to pay.” She liked the idea that they’d go out again aside from the ball.
He didn’t want to let her pay, but he doubted she’d let him win the argument. “Fine.” he said. “Then I’ll just have to take you out a whole lot between then and now. People might start thinking that we’re an item. Think you can handle that?”
She grinned at him, all the while there were butterflies in her stomach. “As foreign as a concept as dating is for me, I think I can manage. I’m sure there’s a book on it somewhere I can study so I can be the perfect girlfriend.”
“So you wanna be my girlfriend then?” he asked her, brow arching ever so slightly, a teasing little smirk on his face no matter how serious he might have been about the question. “Might boost my popularity.” he teased. “Or mess up yours.”
“Well, I don’t have any popularity so if you could stand dating an unpopular spoiled rich girl, I suppose I could be your girlfriend.” They were talking so jokingly, she wasn’t sure if he was serious, but she hoped he was. Alanna really liked Lucas as she had never liked anyone before.
“I don’t really care if you’re popular or not.” he admitted. “I kinda like that you’re not.” he told the girl, reaching up to let his fingers slide over her cheek. “I don’t think I’d like you as much if you were a snotty, spoiled rich girl.” he murmured.
Her cheeks went red as his fingers slid down her cheek. Now the talk was turning a bit more serious. “Then I guess we’re a good match then, huh?” she said softly, looking up at him, her blue eyes vulnerable.
He nodded a little. “I think so. Course I don’t know what your parents would say if you were with a poor guy from the wrong side of the tracks. Wouldn’t want to cause trouble for you.” Lucas murmured.
“Good thing my parents are never around and pay no attention to me. And even if they did, I wouldn’t care.” she said softly, shyly taking his hand in hers under the water.
“Gives me all the more reason to pay some attention to you where they’re lacking.” he murmured. “So... about that whole girlfriend thing, were you serious when you said you wouldn’t mind it?”
Alanna bit her lip, her heart pounding in her chest. “I meant what I said.” she said softly, hoping he wanted her as much as she did him.
He smiled at her and gave her fingers a little squeeze. “Good.” he murmured. “Because I meant what I said too.”
Her heart leaped and she beamed at him, lacing her fingers with his. “So, then I guess that means were boyfriend and girlfriend now?” She couldn’t believe this was happening. Alanna never thought she would date anyone, much less an amazing boy like Lucas.
“Guess so.” he said with a nod, biting his lower lip as his eyes moved over her face. “I’m not very good at this dating thing so hopefully if I suck at it, you won’t be too hard on me.”
She giggled a bit. “I’ve never dated before so I guess we’ll both suck at it until we figure it out?” It was so surreal. This wasn’t exactly how it happened in the books she read. It was a lot more awkward. But real life was different so this must be what it was really like.
“Yeah.” he said with a nod. “I don’t mind though. At least we got past that awkward.” he sighed, shaking his head a little and letting out a laugh. “I’ve been wanting to ask you out since I saw you that day at school but I thought maybe you’d think I was dumb...”
Alanna blushed. “Really?” She remembered the day she met Lucas vividly. It was not even a week ago. She had been brooding about her family, her crappy life, and then here came his amazing boy out of nowhere. “Why? I mean, you didn’t know anything about me.”
“Call it a sixth sense or something.” he said with a little shrug. “I could just feel it.” he explained. “Like I could feel that you were a good person and you proved it by just talking to me.” Lucas told her. “The more we talked, the more I liked you. You weren’t like all the other people there and that only drew me in more.” he admitted. “I just didn’t want to ruin it all by being all jump the gun fast and stuff.”
She smiled at him. “You’re the only one who ever noticed me. I was like a ghost in that school. No one cared about me and everything thought I was some kind of freak...” She looked down, the self loathing she felt about herself bubbling up. “But you saw me...”
“You’re not a freak.” he told her as he let his hand move to her chin, nudging her head up enough that he could look at her. “How could I not see you?” he questioned. “You were like the one source of light in a word full of black and white and dimness.” he explained. “Do you really not see just how bright you shine?”
Alanna smiled at him, tears in her eyes. “You could be a poet yourself.” she said softly. “Thank you for seeing me...” She was in love. There was no two ways about it. She had fallen for him, the only boy to ever see her.
“I don’t know about being a poet.” he told her with a little shrug as he moved his hands to gently brush his thumbs beneath her eyes. “Thank you for seeing me.” he replied. “It’s nice to feel like I’m around someone who isn’t worried about where I come from. I like being around you. It’s nice.”
“You don’t know how many times I wished I was from where you come from.” she said softly, leaning into his touch. “What I wouldn’t give to have a real family...” Lucas would be her family. Maybe it was too much to put on his shoulders, but as of right now, he was all she had.
“My family’s a little broken, but I still want you to meet my mom.” he smiled. “I think you’ll like her and I know she’ll like you. Might dote on you a bit, but she’ll like you.” he assured her. She’d probably faint if he brought home a girl like Alanna. She was pretty, smart and on top of it all she was talented. “Think maybe you’ll come over for dinner in a couple days?” he suggested.
Alanna beamed up at him. “I would love to come to dinner and meet your mom.” she said, sounding deliriously happy. A real family dinner, not some stuck up thing where no one talked to her. A real dinner with a real family.
He grinned at her. “Awesome.” he murmured. “I’ll let mom know and figure out a day when she doesn’t have to work. I’ve never brought a girl home so she might take a day off special for it.” he admitted.
Alanna couldn’t help herself and threw her arms around him, hugging him tightly. “Thank you.” she whispered, clinging to him like he was the only thing in the world. To her, Lucas was.
He smiled again and slipped his arms around her body, giving her a soft squeeze. “You’re welcome.” he said softly. For that moment he felt like maybe his life wasn’t so bad after all. It certainly had taken a sharp turn upwards when she said she’d be his girlfriend. If he could keep that upward trajectory, the sky was the limit. As a bird, he liked the sky.
