In the beginning
who: Anthony and Maddie
what: First Meeting
when: High School Days
where: Art Class
warning: Insane adorableness
Maddie sat in a stool in the corner, her back to the class as she worked on her current piece for her art class. With her talent, her teacher allowed Maddie to basically do anything she wanted. It was her favorite class of the day because she could get lost in her art, the one thing in her life that always made perfect sense. She didn't care about the paint on her fingers or clothes, her long, dark hair pulled back messily. All she cared about was the color on her canvas and the sure feeling of the brush in her hand. She hummed softly as she painted, currently using beautiful hues of blue for a clear sky.
Tony was decidedly unhappy with having to take an art class. He was shit at doing anything more than drawing a shape or two but if he wanted to stay on his sports team, he was going to have to suck it up and deal. So he took the piece of paper he'd gotten from the office to transfer out of one of his other extracurriculars and headed to the art room. Once there, he spent nearly ten minutes listening to the teacher explain things that he didn't really pay attention to. His eyes were mostly on a pretty little dark haired girl who was making magic with a paintbrush and a canvas. He nodded here and there to make the teacher think he was paying attention and when she finally released him to go find a seat, he made sure to pick the one right beside Maddie. He didn't disturb her, far too interested in watching her as she painted. The look on her face as she immersed herself in the colors and the strokes of the brush was fascinating.
The tiny girl wasn't used to any kind of attention so she didn't even notice him sit down at first. She was much too tied up in her work.It wasn't until she went to add more blue to her palate did she notice the older boy staring at her. She jumped a bit, dropped her brush which splattered some paint n his shoes. "Oh, I'm sorry!" she said in a small voice, her chocolate brown eyes a little wide as she looked up at him. He was....beautiful in a way she had never seen before. Every feature in his face called out to her inner artist and she couldn't help but stare herself.
Tony flashed a smile at her as he bent down to pick up the brush she'd dropped. He handed it back to her and the smile only seemed to grow a little bit more. "Guess I'm part of one of your masterpieces now." he told her. "It's cool. Just a little paint, no big deal. I'm Tony."
Tony. It was a name and a face she would never forget, surely. She took the paintbrush from him slowly, trying to think of something to say. "Um...Maddie." she stammered before she looked back to her painting, her cheeks flushed red.
Pretty name for a pretty girl. It figured really. "I didn't mean to make you nervous." he told her. "It's just I don't have an artistic bone in my body and you... well you obviously have enough artistic ability to go around." he said, eyes flicking to her painting and then back to her.
He might of not meant to make her nervous, but a handsome boy talking to her was enough to do so. "Oh, um, yes. Lucky, I guess." she said, fidgeting in her seat a bit. "Why did you take this class?" she asked curiously.
"Kind of had to." he admitted, shrugging a little. "I have barely passing grades but if I wanna stay on the hockey team I have to do something more than just study hall." he told her. "So art it is. Not that I think this poor teacher can do anything to help in my lack of artsy skills, but I got to meet you so I guess that makes it worth it."
Maddie blinked, wondering how meeting her made anything worth anything. She didn't exactly have the highest self esteem. "Um well...I sort of have a free pass to do what I like here...I could help you, if you like." she offered with a hint of a smile. Anything to spend more time with this God on Earth.
"If you think I'm worth the trouble." he told her. "I'd like that." He could already tell that Maddie was one of those pretty girls that had no idea just how pretty they really were. How she couldn't see it was beyond him.
She smiled at him as she set down her own things. "We'll start simple." she said and motioned for him to follow her to the supply closet. She turned on the light and began rifling around. "I know those paint by number sets are in here somewhere..." she mumbled as she bent over to check the bottom shelves.
He got up and watched her as she rifled around. When she said they were doing paint by number stuff, he felt like sort of a dork, but if it meant she'd take even the slightest interest in him, he'd take it.
"Here we are!" she pulled out a box and it wasn't the dorky paint by number he was thinking of. These pieces were much more complicated with small sections that blended to make the painting look authentic. "Do you like wolves? I couldn't find any of the other ones." Now that they were pretty much alone in a closet, she could feel his emotions much more clearly as they weren't dulled by the others. She felt in him a need she couldn't describe and tilted her head a bit, looking at him as if she was trying to figure him out.
"Wolves are cool." he told her with a little shrug as he took the box from her. He could tell she was looking at him a little weird and he arched a brow. "What?" he questioned. "Something on my face?"
She blinked before blushing and handing over the box. "No. Sorry." she said and flustered, made her way past him and back into the art room. She busied herself with getting him brushes and paints, setting up the station next to hers.
He followed after her, not about to believe that it was nothing. She wasn't looking at him that way for nothing. But he dropped it, for now, and focused more on just getting to know the girl. "So, Maddie, is that short for something?" he questioned.
Maddie got everything set up for him before she slid into her own stool to set about mixing some paints. "Yes, Madeline." she said, though no one ever called her that. "Is Tony short for something?" she asked in return.
"Pretty." he said, because it was. It suited her. Same as Maddie did really. "Yeah. It's short for Anthony. I don't think anyone really calls me that much." he shrugged. "But whatever. So, how long have you been painting?"
She idly began to paint as they talked, not really paying attention to what she was doing and just letting her brush do its' own thing. "As long as I can remember." she said with a tiny smile. "I was the girl into finger paints in kindergarten and it just sort of went from there, I guess."
"Well you're amazing at it." he told her. "Don't ever stop." And he meant that. The girl had talent for days and though he probably should have been working on his own painting, he was drawn into hers again.
A small giggle slipped from her and she was surprised at the sound. It wasn't one she had heard often, the sound of her own laughter, even something so small as a giggle. "It's my one joy in life so I'm sure I'll never stop." she said as she painted, a couple having a picnic under the blue sky she was painting beginning to form, and the boy looked an awful lot like Tony.
Her one joy? That made it sound like her life sucked aside from painting. Tony didn't really like the sound of that and he frowned a little. The frown, however, didn't last very long as he continued to watch her painting form. He wasn't blind and could tell that the boy looked a lot like him and the smile that slipped crookedly over his lips said as much. "I'm sure there are other joyous things in your life. Pretty girl like you should have all sorts of good things to talk about."
At this point in her life, painting was indeed her only joy. There was nothing else in her life that was good. Her brush paused for a minute as her face darkened a bit, but it seemed to slip away as quickly as it came. "Painting is just what I love most." she said softly, which wasn't a lie.
He furrowed his brow ever so slightly as he watched her face now that her brush was still. "Did I say something wrong?" he questioned, finding it quite easy to read the girl. "The face you made was... well... you shouldn't ever have to make that face." he commented.
She turned and looked at him, surprise on her face. She could feel concern in him. Concern for her. Maddie couldn't recall ever feeling that from someone before. "No, you didn't do anything wrong." she said. "I'm sorry..." She turned from him again, so confused.
"You don't have to say you're sorry." he told her. "That makes it sound like you think that you did something wrong..." And he didn't think she had in this instance. "So if it wasn't something I did or something I said, what was it?"
Maddie set her brush down and looked up at him, her head tilted to the side. "Why do you want to know anything about me?" she asked, not meanly. She was just very confused by his concern for her and his interest. She had made a career of being unnoticed at school.
"Well, truthfully when I walked in here I just wanted to talk to you because you were gorgeous, even covered in paint. Now, I don't know..." he admitted. "It's just... something about you?" he said, the words sounding more like a question than anything. "Guess I just want to get to know you. Is that so bad?"
Her dark eyes went wide and she stared at him for many moments in shock. When his words really hit her she turned bright red and looked at her lap. She couldn't help the smile that formed on her lips. "No, I guess it's not bad....In fact, it's pretty...good." she said softly before looking up at him with pure wonder.
She looked good when she blushed and he couldn't help but stare a little at the girl. He bit his lower lip as he watched her until she looked up at him again. "Well good. I'm glad it's good. At least I still have some semblance of game." he teased, winking at her.
Maddie giggled, her eyes dancing as she looked up at him as if he was the most amazing thing in the world. "Oh, you're fine. I'm the one who's all muddled." she said, biting her lower lip.
"Oh I'm fine?" he asked, puffing up his chest a little in teasing. "Well thank you, I'm well aware of just how sexy I am but I'm glad you noticed as well." he smiled. "So..." he said, letting his chest resume it's normal position. "So um... can I take you out sometime?"
Maddie hadn't quite meant it that way, but she certainly agreed with him that he was sexy. She smiled at him and when he asked her out, her heartbeat quickened. "You want to go out with me? Like a date?" she asked.
"Well, yeah?" he said. "I mean I think you're pretty and I wanna get to know you better so why not? I mean if you want to. If not, I'll just have to get to know you better, figure out what makes you tick and ask you again." he smiled. He fully intended to be completely and utterly relentless.
Her cheeks bloomed red once more and her emotions were jumbled with his in her mind. "Um...I'd like that...A date...I've never had one before..." she said shyly.
"You've never had one?" he asked, obviously surprised with his brows up and eyes a little wide. "Well cool. I'll be your first. That's pretty awesome."
A giggle slipped from her and she smiled up at him. "I'm looking forward to it." she said and she felt almost dizzy she was so happy. His emotions tying in with hers was the first time Maddie was grateful for her power.
