Tea time
who: Becky & Maddie
what: Luncheon
when: Monday Afternoon
where: Hall Household
warnings: n/a
Maddie smiled as she looked at the lunch she had set out for herself and Becky. She had gone for an English tea service soft of vibe with little sandwiches, fruit, and tea. She had even gotten out the silver tea service Tony had gotten her after they had gotten married. She rarely used it, but today seemed like a good time. She didn't even realize she was trying to impress Becky a little. The house she had Tony lived in was small and the outside was a bit on the shabby side. Maddie worked hard to have a nice home and while it was clean and tidy, the furniture was old and worn. All the dents and scratches were reminders of the fights she tried hard to hide.
She was glad they would be moving, for all she was afraid of the emotional strain. There was darkness in this house that she could still feel. Extreme emotion left an imprint in the very walls of places and this home was full of negative impressions she would do better to forget. While there were no more bruises on her body, there were still bruises on Maddie's soul she was trying to heal. As always she kept everything bottled up and while things were so much better, she was still afraid so she made sure Tony was ok and neglected her own emotional state. She was doing everything right physically for the children, but she was still hurting inside.
Maddie took in a shuddering breath and closed her eyes, forcing herself to focus on the nice lunch she was going to have with Becky and not her own emotional mess. Once her hands stopped shaking she went through the house once more to make sure she didn't miss a speck of dust.
Becky wasn't worried about dust specks or the state of the house either interior nor exterior. She'd fell in love with Robbie who'd spent nearly his whole life, same as Colin, under the hood of a vehicle of some sort and she doubted she'd had that many kisses from him that didn't leave little grease smudges on her cheek. Not that it mattered to her. A man who worked for a living, like her former fiance and her brother, always seemed to be after her own heart. She hardly ever judged people on the outer appearance anyway because she knew no matter how pretty the package, the contents could be ghastly. She highly doubted that Maddie was anything more than a kind soul.
The luncheon would do them both good. Becky knew she needed more friends and she was determined to get herself out and about. Besides, Amy would have little playmates soon and she looked forward to forming a bond with Maddie that would make possible for their children to be fast friends. When she arrived at the Hall's home, she parked her car and went about getting the billion necessary things for her daughter. Her diaper bag had been her best friend since Amy came into the world and even now, nearly a year later, that hadn't changed. Diaper bag over one shoulder and Amy on her hip, Becky headed to the door and rapped lightly upon it.
When the knock came to the door, Maddie was excited and nervous all at the same time. She made her way to the door as quickly as she could, which nowadays wasn't very, and opened the door with a wide smile on her face. "Becky! I'm so glad you could make it. Please, come in." she said, standing to the side to allow Becky to come in. "Hey there cutie patootie." she said to the little girl on her friend's hip. "I hope you like peanut butter and jelly." Maddie ushered them into the living room where everything was set up, figuring it was easier to keep an eye on Amy and it was a nice, relaxed atmosphere. "Make yourselves at home. Can I get yo something to drink? I have lemonade, water, coffee, tea...I baby proofed in here best I could. I don't have any baby gates pet or anything..." Maddie was trying really hard to make Becky feel welcome. She hadn't had a friend over in years. Technically she hadn't had a friend in years to invite over so she really wanted everything to go well.
Becky smiled at the other woman as she stepped into Maddie's home. Setting the diaper bag close to the sofa and glanced around. "You have a lovely home, Maddie." she commented as she adjusted Amy on her hip. "You're so tidy. I just can't seem to find the time most of the time, but you'll probably have a similar time with it when you're done with being pregnant." she laughed. Sometimes she missed being pregnant because at least she didn't have to chase a baby around, but she knew that Amy was well worth her time consuming. As for Maddie's words, Becky couldn't help but smile again. "She'll eat anything that she can get in her mouth." she admitted. "But peanut butter and jelly is her favorite. You'll see." As she sat down on the couch, she looked up to Maddie and thought briefly on her choice of drink. "Lemonade actually sounds lovely." she said to the girl. "And don't worry about baby gates for this one, she tends to find a way to get them open or climb over them. She clunked her head once pretty good in the topple over the darn thing. I stopped using them because she got too smart."
Maddie got Becky a glass of fresh squeezed lemonade she had made and chose unsweetened iced tea for herself before she sat beside her friend with a smile. "Tony likes to come home to a clean house and a warm dinner. Since I don't have a job outside the home, this is my job." she explained. "Of course, since we're having twins, you're probably right." Maddie was still coming to terms with two little ones in her belly instead of just one. "Amy is beautiful and clever. I'm not surprised she figured out the gates. I think those things are more difficult for adults."
Again Becky smiled at Maddie. "Twins." she said, shaking her head a little. "Congratulations again on that news. I'm sure they'll be beautiful." She had no doubts in that. Maddie was a gorgeous woman and her husband certainly wasn't hard to look at. "She is beautiful." Becky agreed as she leaned over to set Amy down on the floor, rifling through her diaper bag for a couple of toys and laying them out for her daughter. "But she knows that she's cute and uses it to her advantage." she laughed.
Maddie giggled as she watched Amy to make sure she wouldn't bump into anything. "Thank you. Tony and I are looking for a bigger house. Not quite enough room for four." she said as Amy attacked the toys. "She'll have all the boys vying for her attention when she gets older, that's for sure."
Becky couldn't help but nod at that sentiment. Amy was a beauty with her pretty blue eyes, like her father, and blonde hair that she'd inherited from her mother. No doubt she'd have all the attention she could ever want when she got older. "I don't think I'll have so much of a problem with that, but Cathair is going to have his hands full with Sadhbh and Amy once they're old enough to think boys don't have cooties anymore." she grinned.
She smiled to Becky. "So things are going well for you two I take it?" she asked as Amy decided it was time to eat and nabbed one of the mini peanut butter and jelly sandwiches Maddie had made for her. The happiness she felt from Becky was wonderful and she was thrilled the woman could feel that way.
"They are." she said with a nod and a bright smile that told just how happy she truly was. It had been quite some time for Becky since she had been this happy. She couldn't imagine her life without Cathair now. He'd managed to pull her up out of the slump she'd been in for so long. He truly had saved her from herself.
"We're going to be getting married on the eleventh of November. I hope you and Tony can make it. I'd love for you to be there. Actually... I'd sort of love it if you were to be in the wedding." she admitted. "You see, I don't have a ton of female friends, if I'm being completely honest." she sighed. "And you, though we haven't known each other long, well... I think you and I are going to be spectacular friends so if you wouldn't mind coming to the wedding and being one of my bridesmaids..." she offered. She knew that she'd probably invite Cleo to be a bridesmaid as well and she figured that Cath could come up with a couple of people to be on his groomsmen side. She was also pretty tempted to have Colin be one of her bridesmen, but she left that part out at the moment, she wanted to consult with him first.
Maddie beamed at the news. "Congratulations!" she said excitedly, thrilled for her. Becky's invitation to be in her wedding had Maddie even more euphoric. Maddie had never had a friend that wanted her to be in a wedding. Technically, Maddie didn't have any friends until recently. "Becky...I would be honored to be in your wedding." she said with a wide smile and her her drink aside to hug the woman. "I'm so happy for you."
"Thank you." she smiled. When she got the hug from Maddie and the acceptance of the offer to be in her wedding, Becky too was approaching being euphoric. She and Maddie were already hitting it off and she knew that they would be fast friends, hell, they already were. "You and me and Cleo can all work together with the goings on for the wedding. Cathair is such a man when it comes to these things. He's pretty much only promised to wear a tux and show up when he needs to."
Maddie giggled. "You may have to rein me in a bit. Tony and I didn't have a real wedding." She had always wished she and Tony had had a pretty church wedding, but there had really been no point. They hadn't really had anyone to invite and they couldn't of afforded it as teenagers either. "It will be lovely, I promise."
"Aww, now that's a shame." Becky said. "But you know, you could always plan a renewal and get that real wedding that you should have gotten." she pointed out with a smile. She really hoped that Maddie would consider doing just that. She was a sweet girl and deserved a real wedding. "I'll appreciate any help you can give, but don't let me wear you out." she told the girl.
Maddie smiled to Becky. "We got married very young. I was only sixteen. We just couldn't really afford it...But maybe one day we could have something." There was a darkness that came to her eyes as she spoke of the past, something very painful she was hiding. "Oh, you won't wear me out one bit." she said, shoving down those memories of the past. "I'm very happy for you."
"Well if you two ever do decide to have a wedding, don't hesitate to give me a call because I'd love to help you plan it out. Especially since you're helping me." she smiled. She truly hoped that Maddie would get the wedding she so obviously wanted. Becky could see it in the woman's eyes that she missed out on having a pretty wedding and wearing a gorgeous dress. Everyone deserved to have a pretty wedding.
"I will be sure to ask you if that happens, promise." she said with a smile. "Though, I do have something that might be helpful." She got up and went to a cabinet, opening the drawer and pulling out a stack of magazines. They were a little outdated, but she found a lot of the wedding dresses nowadays were way to over the top. She came back to the couch and set down the magazines on the table. "There's little post its marking some really nice things." she said with a smile. "If you want them, they're all yours."
Becky took the magazines and smiled at the girl. "Oh, Maddie, thank you." she breathed as she looked them over. Turning to the other woman, she sat them down on the coffee table and leaned to give Maddie a hug. "You have no idea how grateful I am to have someone else in my corner. Thank you." It was nice to just have a friend. Becky needed friends and Maddie was certainly on the fast track to becoming one of the best ones.
