A little discovery
who: Alanna and Landon
what: Discovering the Farmer's Market
when: Sunday Morning
where: Farmer's Market
warning: None
Alanna had snuck out of bed that morning, intent on making breakfast for Lucas. Unfortunately there had been nothing in the fridge so she had gone out to find a grocery store. Unfortunately again, Alanna may have lived in Toronto all her life but one thing she had never done was go to a grocery store. She wasn't sure how it happened but she ended up on the outskirts of the city. She was about to turn around again when she saw a sign for a farmer's market. Intrigued, Alanna followed the signs and pulled in, her BMW looking a bit out of place from the rest of the vehicles there. Getting out of her car, she put on her sunglasses and began walking around. There were all kinds of fresh things and Alanna began to smile. Now that she was having a baby, she needed to eat well. This was the perfect place to find organic foods that would be healthy for her and the baby.
Landon was working that day, doing a little bit of everything really, but one of those things was checking on a few of the sellers at the local farmers market and making sure everything was running smoothly. He caught sight of a girl who looked a little lost as she entered the place. He gave her a flash of a smile and headed in her direction. "Hello, miss, is there something I could help you with?" he offered. He tended to like helping new customers. It brought them back when they received a decent amount of assistance after all.
Alanna turned when someone asked her if she needed any help. The tiny blonde girl smiled at the handsome young man and took off her sunglasses. "Hello...I guess I look like a tourist.: she said with a blush. "I've never been out here before...I was admiring how fresh everything is." She was thinking fruit smoothies definitely. "Honestly I was looking for a grocery store and I got lost."
He chuckled a little. "You look like you've never bee out here." he admitted. "But that's never a bad thing. Lets me know when I need to start helping a person so they come back." he explained. "For what it's worth, I'm glad you got lost, we have quite the selection of fruits and vegetables around here. Tends to put most grocery stores to shame. I'm Landon Parker." he said, offering out his hand. "And if there's anything I can do for you, lemme do it."
Well, he was certainly cheerful and friendly. Alanna didn't see that often in the main part of the city. She smiled and shook his hand. "I'm Alanna Kingsly." she said. "And I appreciate the help. I definitely need some fruit, good kind for smoothies. And well, I guess anything else that looks good or you recommend." She would have to trust Landon's judgement on most things. "Um, I'm pregnant so I don't know if there's things I should eat or shouldn't..." She was going to have to do research. Not to mention if their baby was a were like Lucas, that was probably a whole different set of rules. Boy this was complicated.
"Well, Good Morning, Ms. Kingsley." he said with a smile. When she said she was pregnant, he did blink a bit because she looked so young, but he wasn't one to judge another person. Besides, you never asked a woman her age for any reason. "Most of our vendors don't use any pesticides whatsoever so you could probably pick anything off of any of these places and be just fine as far as your child goes." he assured her. "I'd recommend the tomatoes as far as vegetables go because ours are delicious. Fruits... it's hard to pick one, they're all pretty good. Was there something in particular you might be looking for?"
She could see the surprise in his face when she said she was pregnant and her cheeks went bright red. She felt silly, for blurting it out, but she was so nervous about doing everything just right for the baby. "Well, I was looking to make breakfast before my boyfriend woke up but since I've been lost for over an hour...Do you have any strawberries?"
He saw the blush on her cheeks but decided against commenting on it. "We definitely do." he smiled, canting his head in the direction where the best strawberries were. "Just follow me this way and I'll show you our best batches." he smiled. "Maybe you could make some quick chocolate covered strawberries instead." he told her.
"You do that here?" she asked with a smile as she followed him over to the strawberry stand. Alanna loved chocolate covered just about anything, especially fruit. Now these strawberries were the freshest she had ever seen. They were big and red, like strawberries were supposed to be. "These look scrumptious!" she said excitedly.
"We do a little bit of everything here actually." he told her with a smile. "There's a shop that sells chocolate covered, well... anything really." he explained. "I'll take you there because I'm pretty sure they do chocolate covered strawberries as well. And you could even buy some of these strawberries and get them coated there." he went on as he let her look over the strawberries at the current shop.
"Well, I definitely want to use some of these for smoothies...Maybe a pie." She had never baked a pie before, but she bet she could do it. "Can I have five of these little baskets?" she asked, pointing to the ones with the biggest, ripest strawberries in them.
Landon helped her get five of the little baskets and the man at the booth gave her the price as he put them into a sack to make it easier for her to carry. Once she'd paid, Landon smiled at the girl. "Bet you're gonna make that boyfriend of yours pretty happy with these." he said.
Alanna happily paid for the strawberries and gave a little extra as well. Wasn't like she didn't have the money. The hardest part she was having was giving them small enough bills. "Considering how happy he makes me, it's the least I can do." she said and it was obvious just how much she loved him. "Oh, look, clementines!" she said and bounced over to another booth. She kept doing that, flitting about from booth to booth and soon they were both laden down with things. "Next time I should bring a cart or something..."
He chuckled a little at her words. "A lot of people find they like to do that." he told her with a nod. "But I'm glad that you've decided there'll be a next time. And I'll be more than happy to help you to your car with all your items as well." he offered. Couldn't have the pregnant girl carrying all those fruits and vegetables and other such items on her own. It just wouldn't be gentlemanly.
"I think I'll be coming up here every Sunday morning." she said brightly as they headed toward her car. She used her keys to pop the trunk of the BMW and put the bags she carried into it then let Landon load up all the things he was carrying. "Thank you so much for all your help." Alanna went into her wallet and pulled out a hundred dollar bill and offered it to him as a tip for all his help.
A BMW, yeah she definitely had some money. That he quickly found was extremely true after he'd helped her load the items into the vehicle and she offered him that hundred dollar bill. He shook his head a little and smiled at her. "You don't have to do that, Miss." he told her. "I was happy to help."
Alanna tilted her head a bit. "But it's customary to tip, isn't it?" she asked, looking a bit confused. She had always tipped well cause she had the money to do so. And people with jobs and such worked hard so they deserved it.
"Well, yes, sometimes." he told her, still smiling at the girl who quite obviously had enough money that the hundred dollar bill wouldn't have been a drop in the bucket. "But I'd just rather you keep your money." he shrugged. "It wasn't any trouble for me to help you and certainly not worth that much cash, Miss Kingsley."
"It's not because it was any trouble for you, it's because I'm grateful for your help." she said, her brow furrowing a bit. One thing Alanna could be was stubborn and when someone did a service for her in the capacity of doing one's job, they got compensated dammit.
He wondered if he'd ever win and get her to keep her money. "Well I'm glad you're grateful, but you really don't have to give me anything for the help." he told her. "A thank you works just fine where I come from." he assured her.
Alanna didn't think a thank you was quite enough in this case. He had walked around with her for almost an hour, being kind and helpful. Her eyes flicked to the fresh cut flowers she had gotten and she picked one of the daisies and offered it to him. "Thank you." she said with a smile.
Landon thought this girl had a stubborn streak in her about a mile wide. Still, he laughed and took the flower. "You're very welcome, Miss Kingsley." he told her. "You have yourself a good day."
She smiled at him and closed her trunk. "You have a nice day too, Mr. Parker." she said, her eyes dancing as she went to get in her car before she paused. "Um....how do I get back into the city from here?" she asked meekly.
He laughed at her question. "That's easy." he told her and gave her the quickest, easiest way to get back into town. "Maybe I'll see you around sometime." he told her. "Goodbye." And with that, he turned, flower in hand, and headed back towards the market.
