Everything happens when it should
who: Rowena and Zephyr
what: Friend time!
when: Tuesday Morning
where: Zephyr's Tower
warnings: Kissing
Rowena hefted the basket she had on her arm up a bit more as she panted. Hiking up all these stairs to her best friend's tower when she wanted to visit him could sometimes be very exhausting. After her morning chores she had gone into the forest outside the palace grounds. A very nice buck named Large Horn had showed her a wonderful grouping of berry bushes. She had picked a basket full and decided to share them with Zephyr. She just forgot how much she hated this dratted climb.
She finally came to the door and opened it without knocking. "Zeph?" she called, closing the door behind her.
Zephyr was quite fond of his tower. He much preferred it to any other place in the entire castle. Partly because it was his and partly because it was a motherfucking pimp ass tower. Yes, that's right. Pimp Ass Tower. He spent most of his time there in that tower or doing things for the queen if she so chose. Today he was just filing. Of course his version of filing was knowing where he put things, but not necessarily putting them away neatly. Neat and Zephyr weren't really hand in hand. Like at all. To most people he looked like the most disorganized person in the universe but in Zephyr's mind he was the remembrance Ninja. He could pull lore from the midst of the disarray of his tower like fucking Batman or something. It was definitely safe to say that he was pretty fucking awesome.
At least until he made an ass of himself which he often did. He was surprised by Rowena so that making an ass of himself thing happened. He'd been organizing, standing on a ladder and he was startled so being a mess of arms and legs, he went to turn around on the ladder, but was surprised to hear his name as he did so and, well, he fell on his ass. He managed to collect himself from the ground though he looked a bit like an accordion being played as he did so. "Row." he grinned. "Hey. How are ya?"
Rowena winced when she heard the thump was was likely Zephyr falling off of something. Sure enough when she came around the corner he was picking himself up. She grinned at him, shaking her head. He was such an odd man, but that was why she liked him. She was odd too. "I'm fine." she said, going to him and kissing his cheek. "You ok?"
He grinned more broadly at her and nodded. "Yup." he assured her. "Didn't land on my head or anything vital so I'm pretty sure I'll live." But then he forgot what they were talking about and moved right along. "What's up?" he questioned, grabbing a rolling chair and sitting on it backwards which really wasn't a smart thing to do, but hey, it happened. "How was your day? Do anything fun?"
She smiled at him once he indicated he was ok then showed him her basket. "Long Horn, a very nice buck, showed me where these yummy berries were. I thought to share them with you." she said. Rowena found an excuse to spend time with Zephyr when she didn't have her own work to do.
He smiled at her as his eyes flicked to the basket and back up to her face. "Awesome." he told her. "Sure you're not trying to like poison me though?" he teased, obvious in the way he was looking at her. "I should probably be suspicious."
Rowena laughed and shoved him playfully. "They're not poisonous." she said and popped one into her mouth. "See?" She set the basket on the table before hopping up on said table herself, kicking her feet. "What have you been doing? I've been working with the new pony so much I haven't seen you." She had missed him, which had prompted her visit. Sometimes she missed the days when they were children and spent time together constantly.
"Missing you." he told her as he reached in the basket to steal a berry and slip it between his lips as he scooted towards her in the chair. "Bet you missed me more though." he teased. "So tell me about this new pony of yours?" he asked. "Oh, and I haven't been doing much. Organizing and such." he added, almost as an afterthought even if she'd asked him the question before mentioning the pony.
Zeph was right in his assessment she likely missed him more than he had her. Of course, it made her happy just to know he had been missing her even a little. "Well, Starfire had a beautiful colt last week. He'll be a quick one. The birth was a little hard on ol' Starfire, but she pulled through. I told her she was getting on in years and a new babe might be hard on her, but she insisted. She's a very proud mama." Rowena smiled as she popped another berry into her mouth. "Oh, and the mice up here told me to tell you to stop bringing cheese all the time. They're bored and would like maybe some fruit."
He chuckled a little at her comment about the mice. He couldn't help but wonder and perhaps worry if they'd told her anything else. He did tend to talk to himself about how much he liked Rowena. "I'll be sure to switch to fruit."
Animals in general were secretive creatures. They didn't even tell Rowena everything they heard. "I'll leave some berries for them too." she said with a smile. "I have no chores this afternoon. Did you maybe want to do something together?"
Zephyr grinned at her. "I'll be sure to give them some berries." he told her. As for them doing something together, that only made the smile broaden further. "I'd like that. So what do you wanna do then?" he questioned.
"Well, I would suggest trying a hand at your riding, but I know that's not fun for you." she said with a teasing grin. "Maybe....we could go into town?" It was very rare Rowena left the castle. She lived like it was the 16th century and she liked it, but every once in a while a girl needed some cheese puffs and a movie.
"I'd look like a total loser." he told her. "All arms and legs and then everyone would freak out because some crazy mess of limbs would be wandering about on a horse looking wacky." Which was probably an understatement to say the least. "We could go into town, yeah." he smiled.
Rowena giggled at his description of him riding a horse. It was pretty accurate. He was very awkward in the saddle. "Then it's settled. We can go for a yummy dinner and find something fun to do." she said with a bright smile.
"Perfect." he smiled. "So... shall we get out of here?" Zephyr offered with a little nip at his lower lip. "I'm kinda starved anyways and these berries just aren't filling me up." he smirked, popping a couple of them into his mouth.
She gave him a smile and nodded. She left the basket on the table, knowing the mice would have at what was left. "We shall." she said, hopping off the table and tucking her hair behind her ears. "You drive." While Rowena was excellent on horseback, she was pretty awful behind the wheel of a car.
"I can do that." he told her with a nod. How he'd managed to find a car that didn't squish him was beyond the man, but thankfully he had. "Then you get to decide where we're eating dinner." he said, passing that job off to her as he got up, nearly falling, to find his keys. "Now where did I put those damn keys?" he said, mostly to himself.
Rowena smiled softly. Her best friend was so flighty sometimes. She found it endearing. "I'll help you look." she said as she started searching around. "I need to get you a hook to put them on." she said teasingly.
"I need something that just makes them appear every time I clap or something. Course then I'd probably forget that I need to clap to find them and still lose them." he muttered, shaking his head. Letting out a little sigh, he moved to go through some of his things in effort to locate the keys.
There was a jingling and one of the mice that inhabited his tower came over with Zeph's keys, offering them to Rowena. She squatted down with a smile, accepting the keys. "Thank you." the mouse squeaked and ran off. "Here we are." she said, smiling to Zephyr. "They really like you, you know."
Zephyr smiled as he took the keys from her. "Oh yeah?" he asked. "And what do they tell you about me?" he asked, unable to not be a little bit curious about the animals that lived in the tower.
Rowena giggled as they started walking down the stairs. "Well, they mention you talk to yourself a lot. They don't always understand human speech, you know. And animals that haven't been around me much have even a harder time. But they do notice you talk when no one's here but you."
That made him flush because most of the time he was talking to himself about her. It was easier to talk about her to himself because he didn't really judge himself about his feelings for Ro. "Really?" he said, chuckling nervously as they headed down the stairs and eventually out into the grounds of the palace. "Well I can't help it. Sometimes my brain gets so full I have to talk out loud."
"I spend my day talking to animals. You're no weirder than me." she said with a giggle. The moment they were on the grounds, animals came to greet Rowena. She was always polite and smiles, giving them pets or treats from her pockets. Now that she was older, she was more comfortable with her ability and more open about it than she once was when getting picked on.
"The animals talk back to you though." he pointed out with a smile. "That makes you just a little bit less weird than me talking to myself." he grinned. Pressing the button on his keychain that unlocked the doors of his car, he opened hers up for her and let her settle in before closing the door behind her and getting into the car himself. "So where we off to?"
Rowena put her seat belt on as he got into the car and her face grew thoughtful. "What about that Thai place?" Rowena was a vegetarian as she was much to close to animals to be eating them. "Or maybe we can try somewhere new?" She always managed to find something with no meat in it wherever they went.
"The Thai place isn't bad." he agreed with a bit of a nod. "I wouldn't mind some Thai. Or we can drive around and see what we come up with." he offered. While Zephyr wasn't exactly a vegetarian, he didn't like eating meat in front of Rowena. It made him feel all weird and like he was making her uncomfortable, even if he wasn't.
"I'm happy with anything." she said with a smile. Rowena loved going out, just the two of them. Sometimes she liked to pretend, in her own mind, that Zephyr was courting her. It was silly, she knew, but Rowena couldn't see anyone else in her life.
"Well then let's park somewhere and walk around til we find something that says 'hey, eat me'. Preferably not just some random homeless man because I'm pretty sure that still would mess up your whole vegetarian thing." he teased, winking at her as they headed out of the palace and into town.
Rowena laughed, watching the scenery as they drove. "It'll be fun to find somewhere new." she said, smiling. She loved spending time with Zephyr, no matter what they were doing. Walking around the city sounded perfect. Maybe he would even hold her hand. He always did when they crossed the street, even though she was grown up now. She didn't mind. She liked it.
Zephyr didn't care what they might be doing for the rest of the night so long as they were together. He was certain that the only important thing in the universe was being with Rowena. Or at least around her since he was more than a little terrified of telling her how he really felt about her. He wasn't sure what she'd say or what she'd think or how she might react to his true feelings. He was too afraid of the unknown to ever risk the truth coming out. "Perfect then."
The rest of the ride was idle chatter, Rowena telling Zephyr about some of the animals she had met. When they made it to the city they parked the car and Rowena eagerly got out. There were so many people running about. She could hear all kinds of animals and she turned to Zephyr with a grin.
That grin was going to be the death of him, of that he was sure and certain. Did it have to be so damn pretty? Did she have to be so damned pretty? He smiled right back at her and moved around the car to catch her hand. He could blame it on something random if she asked. he just wanted that connection. "So where to?"
Rowena's heart leapt when he grabbed her hand. She couldn't help but to lace her fingers through his. "Let's go this way." she said, pointing to the right. Seemed like a good enough direction to her. She smiled up at him.
"Sounds perfect to me." he told her as he followed after her in the direction she'd indicated. Zephyr's eyes flicked around the area they were passing for whatever restaurants they could find that looked tasty enough to actually bother with. And something that carried vegetarian dishes.
As they walked hand in hand, Rowena felt it was like the were dating. She could pretend they were boyfriend and girlfriend, if only for a little while. "Hey, look at that place." she said, pointing to what looked like a super trendy vegetarian restaurant.
While Zephyr wasn't a vegetarian really, he was for the most part. At least when he hung out with Rowena. On occasion he'd have a pepperoni pizza or something, but that was his guilty pleasure that he had every once in a while when she was busy doing something else. "Looks good to me." he said with a little nod. "I'm kinda in the mood for something new and different."
Rowena smiled up at him. "I am too." she said, squeezing his hand gently before leading him into the restaurant. She had been right in thinking it was trendy. Living in a palace, she had learned to recognize wealth in clothing and a lot of the people in here were wearing designer clothing. She felt a little out of place in her much cheaper but sturdy clothing. She moved closer to Zephyr, her nervousness around people creeping through.
Rowena had always been the nervous sort around people. Zephyr thought that was a lot of the reason - aside from her abilities of course - that she got along so well with animals. Rowena was animalistic in a way, similar to something small and timid and if anything, it endeared her more to him. He let her get closer to him and even slipped his hand out of hers to wrap it around her shoulder as they made their way through the restaurant. "Do you want to get something to go or do you want to eat in?" he questioned.
The shy girl's eyes flicked around. "Um, could we get it to go and eat in the park?" she asked, snuggling a little against him as they went to wait in line. Her eyes scanned the menu, but all of her thoughts were on Zephyr's arm around her and the feel of him so close to her. "The veggie wrap and fries looks good."
Zephyr nodded at her first request because he knew how she felt about crowds. He wasn't going to force her to sit inside if it made her feel all awkward. "The park sounds good." he agreed as they got to the counter to make their orders. "I think so too." he told her with a nod. "What do you want to drink?" he questioned.
Rowena leaned her head against him as he ordered for them. "Iced green tea please." she said, her eyes closing for a moment and just basking in how wonderful it felt to be so close to him.
After ordering their food and drinks, Zephyr then led them over to a table to wait for their order to be called up. He deliberately settled next to the girl so he could slip his arm around her again. She hadn't seemed to mind it before so he was going to take advantage of that fact. "You smell good." he murmured softly, mostly to himself.
With the crowd of people, she felt very comfortable with his arm around her. She felt safe and protected. Not to mention she just liked the feeling of his arm around her. Rowena snuggled a bit into his hold, smiling a little at the comment about her scent. "I probably smell like grass and horses." she said with a giggle.
"You smell beautiful." he told her, because well, she did. He made no more attempt to convince her because he knew it was true. Pulling her in a little bit more, he pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "So get over it." he smirked.
Rowena felt like she was flying she was so happy. It was like a real date. He had his arm around her and kissed the top of her head. She felt amazing. She looked up at him with her impish little smile, the one she only ever had for him. "Fine, but I think you smell good too. Like old books." she said.
"Great. I'm dusty." he teased, chuckling a little at his own words. That little smile of hers was going to drive him insane and as he bit his bottom lip, he found his eyes drifting over her mouth. She had a great mouth. A very kissable mouth. A mouth that felt like it was drawing him in and he leaned forward a little bit without even realizing it. Somehow he managed to hold himself back from kissing her, though his whole body was angry with him. "Keep smiling at me that way and you'll never get rid of me." he teased.
"I never want to get rid of you." she murmured softly, her heart pounding in her chest. When he had leaned in she thought he was going to kiss her. Especially the way his eyes had centered on her mouth. Could Zephyr like her? It seemed so crazy to think it because she had loved him from afar for so long. "I love how you smell and it's not dusty it's...perfect."
He smiled at that. "Good because you're stuck with me." he told the girl. "You think I smell perfect?" he asked her. Before he put much thought into it, he grinned more broadly and drew in a breath. "Almost sounds like you like me or something." he breathed. "Do you?" Why he'd just come out and said that, he had no idea, but it was out now. Out and unable to be brought back in again.
Rowena was perfectly happy to be stuck with him. Then he asked her if she liked him and her eyes went wide. Her cheeks went red. And she couldn't speak. Not a word came from her lips as she stared up at him, unable to think let alone speak.
Her eyes went wide and her cheeks slid into a red hue and it was then that he realized what he'd asked her. But before he could take it back, he realized that blushing meant embarrassment and why would she be embarrassed if it wasn't true? "You like me?!" he whispered, blinking a little as he stared at her, wide eyed.
Oh God. He knew. He knew now. She covered her face with her hands, completely humiliated. This was going to ruin everything. They were so close and now everything would be weird. But she had to answer him. The most she could do was nod in the affirmative.
She was so damn cute when she covered her face like that. He hadn't meant to embarrass her, but he was just freaking surprised. She liked him! She actually one hundred percent liked him! Fucking spectacular. "Oh thank god." he said with a little laugh and his fingers closed around her wrists and pulled her hands away from her face. "That means I can stop bottling up the fact that I've loved you since we were like... well ten or something." he smiled. "So... does that mean that you wanna be my girlfriend?" he questioned, tilting his head inquisitively. Zephyr never was one to keep things to himself and now that he knew she liked him, he didn't plan on holding anything in.
Rowena stared at him for several moments when he pulled her hands away, in complete shock. She couldn't quite believe what she was hearing. He loved her. Zephyr loved her. "Zephyr..." It was the most she could say at the moment as she tried to get her throat to work. "I....I've loved you for as long I remember." she said as tears came to her eyes. "I want to be your everything."
And now she was crying? Women did not make any form of sense. "If you love me, why are you sad?" he asked her as he blinked at the girl. Zephyr wasn't really a guy who had a lot of suave attributes.
She let out a little laugh as she sniffled. "I'm not sad at all." she said, smiling up at him. "I'm just...so happy." Rowena threw her arms around him, hugging him tightly. "I do love you. I've loved you forever. And you love me. So everything is perfect."
Zephyr was surprised to hear that she loved him, but the smile on his face said it was a happy surprised. He hugged her back because damn if she didn't feel all soft and warm and perfect. "So that means you're my girlfriend?" he asked her.
Rowena laughed, pulling back a bit to smile up at him brightly. "Yes. I am definitely your girlfriend." she told him, looking up at him lovingly. She couldn't believe it. All this time! Well, they would have to make up for it.
That smile was certainly worth the tears he'd just seen her shed. His fingers came up to cup her cheeks and he leaned in to kiss her because damn it, he wanted to. It was a soft kiss, gentle and slow. He didn't care who was watching, this was history in the making for Pete's sake. He'd loved this girl even before he knew what love was and he'd be damned if he spent another minute without kissing her.
When Zephyr's lips touched hers, her heart stopped. For so long she had dreamed of what it would be like to kiss Zephyr. In fact, she had never kissed anyone before this moment. Slowly her eyes slid closed and she kissed him back, slipping her arms around him.
Her lips were soft and she was warm and when her arms wound around him, he found that this was even better than having a good book to read or even a nice cool breeze. Rowena was everything. Why he'd waited so long was a question he couldn't answer, but all that really mattered was that they'd found their way to this moment somehow. That had to count for something.
