Romeo and Juliet
Who: Danielle and Aidan
What: Surprise encounters
When: Monday Evening
Where: An alley
Warning: Violence and Hot Kissing
Aidan had been told by Death that he’d be taking on a new reaper. He’d been mentor to a few new reapers along the way and so it wasn’t really that big a deal to the man. Death had told him where the reaper would be appearing and that it was a woman, but he didn’t really have any more information than that. It wasn’t unusual not to have much information, after all Death never was one to explain himself or give you too much to go on. He seemed to like the art of surprise and Aidan had grown fairly used to the way he operated.
That evening after work, he’d headed for the alley where the girl was supposed to show up. He was early so he leaned up against the wall of one of the buildings, eyes moving over the alley as he waited for her to appear. He was expecting a lot of things, but when Danielle Thompkins appeared looking startled from the death she’d just been jerked from, he thought he might faint. Death was a fucking bastard. “Danielle...” he breathed, pushing away from the wall of the building, his eyes moving over the girl’s body. This situation had just reached fucked up status.
Last thing Danielle Thompkins remembered was being shoved and falling. She had heard the blare of the subway train horn and then everything had gone black after that day. So when she heard the voice she remembered so well. The voice that had whispered how much he loved her as he had moved above her, she knew. She was dead.
Dani turned and her eyes went wide. There he was. Aidan. The love of her life. The man she had given all of herself to. The man who had died sixth months ago. So yes, she was dead. And looking around, Heaven had gotten pretty ghetto. It had to be Heaven, because Aidan was here. A huge smile came to her face. “An alley way? God gone hoodrat or something?” asked the woman, putting her hands on her hips.
She thought she was dead. It really wasn’t something to be surprised about because he sure as shit had thought he was dead when he transported away after his own death. Technically if he really wanted to be politically correct, she was dead. Just not the sort of dead she thought. “You’re not dead.” he told her, shaking his head a little. “This isn’t Heaven, or Hell, or Limbo if that’s what you believe.” he went on. It was better to get it all out right off the bat like ripping off a bandaid. It was a shitload better than trying to deal with the emotions that were rushing through him. “This is Toronto, Canada.” he explained. “Welcome to your semi-afterlife.” he said. “You’re sort of dead, but not completely. You’re a reaper. I can explain it all, but if you’re gonna punch me, you might as well go ahead and do it now because we have a lot of work to do.”
She stared at him as he talked and it really didn’t fit into her brain at the moment. Whatever he was talking about was something she so didn’t understand. “Ok, I’m lost. Are you some kind of spirit guide or something?”
He shook his head. “I’m a reaper.” he told her. “You know, like the grim reaper. Only different than anything you’ve heard because I don’t wear a hooded cape or carry a scythe.” he explained. “Death isn’t just a thing, he’s a person and he’s kind of vindictive.” he told her. “He decides who becomes reapers and who doesn’t and apparently you’re the latest one brought into the little circle. And I didn’t die six months ago. That was a lie. I had to leave town because I don’t age and you’d figure things out and I couldn’t let that happen.” he added. “I’m sorry.” Bracing himself for a punch, he closed one eye and waited as he watched her with the other.
He was smart to brace for the punch. Dani was a serious underground fighter. She had whooped ass for a living. So back went her fist and she punched him, sending him sprawling backward. “YOU SON OF A BITCH!” she screamed at him, stalking over to him and kicking him. “I mourned you! I cried at your fucking funeral you fuck! Six months! Six months I thought you were dead! I was on my home to fucking kill myself before I got hit by a goddamn subway train!”
If the punch hadn’t hurt and the kick hadn’t caused his insides to ache, her words certainly did. He just lay there on the ground as he let her have her words. She was going to kill herself? She had mourned for him so badly that she wanted to die herself? Aidan hadn’t believed that she’d do such a thing and knowing that he was the reason she’d suffered so much made him wish he could take it all back. A small part of his brain was certain that Death was somewhere out there laughing his old ass off. Motherfucker.
“I’m sorry.” he breathed between ragged breaths. “I didn’t want to hurt you, but coming clean wasn’t something I was able to do. Telling you that I was dead wouldn’t have gone over any better than just dying. I thought at least you’d be able to cope with me dying more than me being a fucking reaper.” he breathed. “I couldn’t give you the life you deserved. I loved you enough to hope you could find someone that could.”
“Oh yea, it was for my own good. That’s a load of bullshit Aidan.” she snapped, stepping back from him as she wanted to hurt him more but knew she shouldn’t. “Well, hurray, and now I’m fucking dead. Or half dead. Guess love wasn’t everything.” She wasn’t dealing with this shit right now. No way. She had just gotten splatted by a subway train. That was enough for one day. She turned on her heel and stormed off, intent on getting as far away from him as possible. Like Fiji. Fiji was far away and had a beach.
Aidan did his best to get to his feet, despite the pain that still stung his face and where she’d kicked him. Stumbling after her, he reached out to grab the girl’s hand, pulling her back into the alley before she could get too far from him. Shoving her against the wall of the building, he let his eyes catch hers. “I know you’re fucking pissed at me and you have every right to be, but you can’t just walk off. There’s more to being a reaper than I can even begin to tell you in ten seconds so if you want to leave, fine, you can leave, but I have to tell you how your life is going to be now.” he said. “It’s not sunshine and roses and shit and if you don’t do it right, Death can be a douche and smudge you out before you even have a chance to turn around.” he pointed out. “I’m sorry I hurt you. I didn’t want to hurt you.”
It was all too much. All of it. Too much information and coming from him...Tears began to stream down her face and she shook her head. “I just died. Like, ten minutes ago and I was greeted by the man I loved whom I thought was dead. You need to cut me some slack here.”
He hadn’t meant to make her cry and he understood her confusion and anger and he derserved a lot more than she’d given him. His fingers moved, thumbs brushing over her cheeks to rid her face of those tears. “I know.” he whispered. “But I want you to understand that I didn’t leave you because I wanted to, I left because I had to. I couldn’t just drag you any deeper than I already had. We’re not supposed to fall in love and you... I fell in love with you. It was too dangerous, too uncertain for me to be able to stick around. But I did love you. I always loved you.” he assured her.
“Dammit....” As angry as she was, she couldn’t be mad at him. The situation yes, Death, whoever the fuck he was, absolutely, but Aidan....Six months and he was here, inches from her. Emotion swallowed her up and she kissed him, hard, rough, and claiming.
He certainly hadn’t expected her to kiss him, but he wasn’t about to just let the kiss go by unreturned. He’d missed her for six months. He’d wanted to call her, hold her, touch her. Now here she was kissing him and all he could think about was how much he’d wanted this. Death was a stickler for punishment. What he’d done to piss the guy off was beyond him. Or maybe he’d really pleased him. Fuck if it wasn’t confusing. Aidan pressed himself against her, letting out a soft groan, muffled against her lips. All this time and she still tasted the same as he remembered.
It was all she could do right now not to fall apart. She needed something solid, and Aidan was as solid as her world got at the moment. Her hands buried in his hair and she moaned, jumping up to wrap her legs around his waist. It wasn’t like it was the first time she and Aidan had been in a compromising position in public.
The alley was a pretty deserted place so he wasn’t much caring about where they were at that moment. All he cared about was her lips against his own and the way she tasted and the way she felt. Hell, the way she sounded was enough to make him hard, his body remembering her instantly. He pressed her back against the wall of the building, teasingly rocking his hips against hers as he tilted his head and slipped his tongue into her mouth, a small groan escaping his lips.
A moan fell from her mouth into his as their tongues met. Her hips moved against his and all she wanted at that second was him. She could worry about being a reaper later. For the last sixth months all Danielle could think about was one more day with Aidan. It was a backwards way to get it, but at the moment, she wasn’t complaining.
The way her hips moved against his was enough to have his body aching for hers. His lips moved away from her lips only to trail from her cheek to her ear. “I missed you so much...” he breathed against her ear. And he had, more than he had the words to say. He’d loved her every second they were together, and even more the time when they weren’t.
“I never got over you...I never would....” she whispered, her voice strained with both desire and emotion. She had never given herself to anyone, until Aidan. She knew, after he was gone, she would never give herself to anyone else ever again. However it happened to have come about, they were together again. Maybe God had heard her.
“I love you, Dani...” he breathed as he pulled back enough to look at her. “And I’d never have asked for you to end up like me... like this, but I can’t lie and tell you that I’m not happy you’re here. I’ve wanted to see you, to talk to you, to smell you, to hold onto you like this since the second I last saw you and I swear I’ve been counting them since then.” And he really had, but that was beside the point. “There’s so much to explain, but maybe I should get you home first... if you don’t mind staying with me...”
Dani pressed her forehead against his, panting heavily. “For today Aidan, we’re going to pretend we are how we were. No talk of reaping or anything. Just...give me this one day. I need it. Then can deal with everything else. I just want one more day.” she whispered, gently stroking his cheek. If her death didn’t bring her to Heaven, she wanted at least one day of it before she started her new life.
“I can give you the day, but tomorrow there’s going to be a lot of things that I have to tell you.” he breathed. “I still need to get you home. Even if all I want to do is stay here with you forever.” He knew that would be impossible, but at least he could pretend for the rest of the day that he wasn’t a reaper and neither was Dani, no matter what the truth was.
“Home sounds good.” she said with a smile. The same smile she would give him whenever she saw him. Just one more day. She knew everything would probably suck come tomorrow, but for today, it was just them again. Aidan and Dani.
