Things are looking up.
Who: Maddie and Anthony
What: Happy News, Happy Anthony
When: Monday, Late Evening
Where: Their home
Warning: None
After his meeting with Rupert, Anthony was feeling like a new man. He finally felt like someone thought he was more than just a wife beater or pissed off fire elemental. Rupert seemed to think that he perhaps was suffering from bi-polar disorder which was really the best news the man had heard in his life. Bi-polar disorder was manageable. He could learn to deal with his issues and not take things out on Maddie or the baby and that certainly made it easier for him to be able to accept that he was going to be a father. He felt like he’d just gotten a new lease on life.
On the way home, he got a bouquet of roses and a box of chocolates for Maddie and after thankfully thinking about that wine he wanted to get, bought a bottle of sparkling grape juice. When he walked in the door that evening, a smile on his face, he was looking to spoil his wife and take advantage of his happy mood. “Maddie, baby, where are you?” he asked as he sat his items down on the coffee table and moved through the house to look for the woman.
Maddie was in the kitchen, just setting dinner on the table. She had been walking on eggshells around him since Friday, terrified he would snap. He had been leaving a lot over the weekend and Maddie had spent most of her weekend in bed sleeping. She knew she had to do something so she cleaned the house and made dinner today while Anthony was at work.
She looked up as she heard him come in and she felt....happiness and relief coming off of him in waves. She blinked, completely confused. “I’m in the kitchen...” she called, setting the warm, home made bread on the table.
He smiled at her as he entered the kitchen. “There’s my favorite girl.” he murmured, moving to give her a squeeze once she’d set down what she was carrying on the table. “So I’ve got some really good news.” he murmured, smile still firmly spread over his lips. “Ready to eat now or do you want your presents first?”
Saying Maddie was confused was an understatement. Either he had a really good day at work or...”Honey, are you high?” he asked, obvious concerned for him, though she hugged him back. “I mean, you’re so....happy.” She didn’t want to rain on his parade, but the sudden change in him was a little shocking.
He shook his head a little and pulled back enough to look at the girl. “No, not high, just... had a really good evening.” he explained. “And I’ll tell you all about it, but first come to the living room.” he said, guiding the girl in that direction.
Maddie nodded and let him lead her into the living room. She was glad he had had a good evening. It was nice to see him smiling and feel how happy he was. It had been a long time since she had felt that from him. Her eyes went a bit wide as she saw the flowers and chocolates. “Oh honey, you shouldn’t have....”
“I should have.” he told her. “I should have a lot more actually.” he sighed as he slipped his arms around her waist and pulled her to him. “I went to the psychiatrist today.” he told her. “He isn’t positive but he says he’s pretty sure that I’m bi-polar.” he explained. “But whatever it is, he says that me being angry isn’t just because I’m a fire elemental. There’s more to it which means that maybe me being such an ass all the time isn’t entirely my fault. So I’m happy. Maybe he can help me enough to fix whatever is broken inside of me and I can treat you like you deserve to be treated. You and the baby.” he said softly, gently brushing his fingers across her cheek.
Maddie listened to him and pride bloomed. He was really trying this time. And he had found someone who was willing to look past what he was. Someone who would really try to help him. “That’s so great, Anthony!” she said, smiling up at him widely as she hugged him back. “I told you, everything is going to be ok.”
He actually believed that maybe she was right this time. Maybe everything would be okay. He could change if there was someone to help him. With Maddie and this Rupert guy on his side, maybe there would be some miraculous way for him to be able to turn everything around. Changing jobs had certainly helped, so this was just another way to make sure he continued on the right path. Pulling back from the hug, he smiled at her, hand gently stroking over her cheek. “How was your day?”
“It was fine. Just cleaned and such.” The house was immaculate so she meant she did her OCD cleaning when she was worried. She hadn’t painted since she told him she was pregnant, but she felt the stirring of...something. That sense she got before a major piece of work would come from her. Something sale worthy. “I missed you.”
“I missed you.” he replied, pulling her in closer to him again. “I’m sorry if I worried you the last couple days.” he said, gently brushing her hair from her face. “I’m just really trying to figure out how to control myself and I don’t want to hurt you anymore. I can’t keep hurting you.”
Maddie snuggled into her husband’s hold, closing her eyes as she rested her head against his chest. “I love you, Tony...so much...” she murmured softly. “You’re doing great. I’m so proud of you.”
He felt like she shouldn’t have to be proud of him for doing something that he should have been doing all along, but still it felt nice to hear the words. “Thank you.” he murmured, fingers gently brushing over her hair perhaps just to comfort her that little bit more. “I love you too, baby, you know that.”
“I know.” she murmured softly. Everything was going to be ok, it had to be. Maddie had gone through so many terrible things in her life, she was due some peace. She pulled back enough, gently taking his hand and placing it on her belly. “And you’ll love our baby just as much.”
He smiled a little as his fingers splayed out over her stomach. “I already love this baby.” he assured her as his eyes moved to his hand and then back up to her face. “And I love you for helping me make this baby and I want to be a good father and I don’t want to be everything that your father was.” he told her, his eyes latching on hers once more as he leaned in to steal a little kiss. “I’m gonna do right by you, Maddie. I promise.”
She smiled, reaching up and stroking his cheek. “I know, Anthony.” she said softly. She loved him more than life itself. Maddie knew this baby would have the best parents and best life he could provide. “I love you.” She leaned up on her tip toes and kissed him deeply.
Anthony let his arms wind around her again, pulling her in close to his body as he fell into that kiss. For the first time in a long time he actually felt like things might be okay.
