The Gods Must be Crazy
Who: Bill
What: A Nudge in the right direction
When: 10.16.11 - Early to Late morning
Where: Bill Johnson's house to Dead Until Dark
Warning: None
One thing Bill liked about working the day-shift: It gave him an excellent excuse to get up early. That was the time when there was the least chance when one of his neighbors would be up in time to see this particular morning ritual. He took a deep breath in as he began to walk around the small fire in his back yard. Most of his rituals involved the fire. A thing of the physical, and yet spiritual, alive, yet not. It was the perfect medium to put him in connection with the Spirits. He had a feeling they had something for him today. So he began to chant.. It started as a low, rumbling note deep in his chest. The spirits wanted the chants sung. It's a good thing they didn't want them sung well. Syllables flowed from his mouth as his steps turned to a dance. This was the main reason he had the tall fence with trees in the back yard; privacy. years of training and practice made it simple to flow through the dance as the song spoke great praise to the spirits.
His chant rose to a crescendo, as a feeling passed over him... contact had been established. He sat on his knees, kneeling before the fire as he stared into it. Sweat was glistening off his bare, hairy chest. The orange glow cast his tattoos in a sinister light. He took a deep breath, and tasted the smoke of the fire. The vision began.
A place where the water burned. A place where the Bear and the Wind worked together. A monster lay in wait, wearing two skulls on its waist. It attacked a She-Bear with a hand that sprung from its forehead. It used her to lure the male Bear into a trap. The Wind raged at the demon, but could not drive it away. The Owl and the Lion arrived to help the Bears. The Demon injured the Owl, and fled the Lion. The Lion. Find the Lion. Find The LION. heheheheheHAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
The real world reasserted itself... The vision was over. Instinctively, Bill Snorted deeply, refilling his lungs from a breath he hadn't known he'd been holding.Filling his nose was the scent of a strange cat... Big Cat. Not like a Mountain Lion. He knew that smell. This was close. But different. Coyote's laugh rang in his spirit. He was supposed to find this cat... the Lion. The thought of sending his favorite Bison out hunting again must amuse Coyote to no end. He was just glad that Coyote couldn't play with things anymore once they died. He rose, and put out the fire... taking care to do so with respect.
Later that morning...
Bill heard the police radio come to life, talking about an alarm being tripped at the Dead Until Dark bar... A tickle in his mind brought his vision to the forefront again. Damn. He was too far away to get there in time. Yeah, the vision couldn't have been in his precinct's jurisdiction, could it? He glanced up as he headed to his car. He saw the three youths watching him from across the way. He recognized that glare. They knew he was a cop. Good reason, he'd busted them six months ago. He was starting to get recognized. He was too well known... he was about to not be effective at this anymore. Not here, anyway... He'd have to talk to the captain.
He climbed into his car, and started driving toward the bar. When he got there, he took a deep whiff. There was that cat smell... the Lion had been here. part of him was telling him to go anywhere but where that smell was. The Bison part, if he had to wager. He checked in with one of the officers on scene, and found out what happened... Someone had attacked the proprietor and the Medical Examiner... who happened to be his girlfriend. The proprietor was banged up pretty bad. Two off duty cops had already responded to the scene early on. One of them had gotten a broken arm, the other some bruises. The perp got away. Bill frowned... the scents he was getting from inside... Bears. Cat. Owl. Someone else. Sounding a little too close to his vision. Bill handed his card to the head officer on site, and said if they needed any assistance, to call him personally. He'd do what he could. Helping fellow cops, and all that.
He got back into his car, and rolled down the window... as a familiar laugh echoed distantly in his ears, he took another whiff of the air.. and started trying to find the Lion.
