Who: Xander, Mateo and Chloe
What: Staring
When: 10.14.11 - Friday Afternoon
Where: The high school
Warnings: Ridiculous teenage behavior?
Xander had noticed for most of the class that Mateo kept looking over at Chloe. A lot. Creepy, right. He'd ignored it for half the class but when the teacher gave them a partner project, he teamed up with Mateo and after the guy getting distracted for the twelfth time, he jabbed him with his elbow. "I thought she was a creepy stalker chick. Why do you keep looking at her? And you're making it obvious. You practically fell out of your chair last time."
“Ow!” Mateo hissed, glaring at Xander as he rubbed his side. Xander’s elbows were freaking pointy. Yes, he’d been looking at Chloe, but it was all Xander’s fault. He was the one who’d said that Chloe had a crush on him. Matt never would have even noticed, wouldn’t have paid her any attention, if his friend hadn’t said anything. “I am not making it obvious,” he muttered under his breath. “It’s your fault for saying anything.”
"You are making it obvious," he countered. "By the way you're looking at her, I don't think you mind so much," he added, glancing back at Chloe who saw him looking. He decided to be mean and smiled broadly at her, giving her a little wave. She returned with a broad grin and a little wave. Attention back on Mateo, he smirked. "It's just a smile, are you broken now?"
Mateo just glared at Xander. And then, as if things couldn’t get any worse, his friend turned and looked at Chloe. And then waved. Practically growling, Mateo kicked Xander under the table. “You are so dead,” he hissed, making a determined effort not to look over at Chloe. Or think about the fact that she looked cute when she smiled. He looked down at his book, trying his best not to think overly murderous thoughts about his friend. He didn’t have a crush on Chloe. He didn’t even know her. Yeah, she was hot, but he hadn’t even really noticed her until Xander started putting thoughts in his head.
"Why am I dead? You don't even like her," he said, rolling his eyes. "She's weird, remember?" he smirked. It amused him because that hiss and the kick under the table weren't things someone would do if they didn't like someone. "You've been looking at her all period," he pointed out. "Just because I said she thought you were hot? Really? I think the feelings mutual, you just were too stupid to turn around during class before," he shrugged.
“You’re dead because she’s gonna think I like her.” Mateo muttered, not looking up from his book. Because seriously, if Chloe noticed him staring at her, he might actually die of embarrassment. “I was only looking because I was curious,” he pointed out. “You said she liked me. I’m trying to work out if you’re telling the truth.” And yeah, ok, maybe he was noticing her more. Like how cute her freckles were. Or the way she kept tucking her hair behind her ear.
Xander rolled his eyes again. "Whatever," he told the other boy. "Why would I lie and say she likes you if she didn't? That's stupid. I'm trying to help you out. She's hot. She's single. She's the head cheerleader and she's going to be homecoming queen and she's not a total bitch. What's the problem? She wrote your name on a notebook? Lame." At least he thought so. Girls were weird and did weird things. Didn't make her any less hot.
“Because you’re an asshole who enjoys torturing others for your own twisted pleasure?” Mateo suggested, jokingly. Xander was a good guy, but like Mateo, he had a warped sense of humor. It was part of the reason they got on so well. Most of the time.
“Maybe I don’t want to date her,” he muttered, without much feeling. The more he looked at Chloe - and he did, sneaking another glance as he turned the page of his book - the cuter she got. “Besides, she’s going to Homecoming with that asshole Heller. If she’s into guys like him, I’m totally not going there.” Because, yeah, that did make him think a little less of her. He got the prestige thing - he was on the football team, she was a cheerleader, it fit. But still. Heller had no redeeming features beyond his Letterman jacket.
"You're such an idiot. She's probably going to make you jealous," he pointed out. "And you're going to let her slip by because you're being self righteous? Then maybe you shouldn't date her. I don't want her dad coming after me for trying to get her with an ass like you if that's how you think," he said, eyes flicking to his paper as he filled in the answer to one of the questions. "She didn't want to go alone. She's been bitching about it for days. She thinks he's an ass, but he's the only one who asked her. She's popular, but he pretty much made sure that no one else would just by laying claim. He might as well of pissed on her leg in the courtyard."
Mateo tossed a balled up scrap of paper at him irritably. “You’re such an ass,” he muttered, tilting his head to look at the answer Xander had written. “And wrong, also.” There might be a hint of a smug grin on his face. Just a little. He was trying not to think about what Xander was saying about Chloe. Yeah, ok, maybe he had a better insight than anyone else, considering he was staying with the Richards’ right now. That didn’t mean he was right. And yeah, Heller had pretty much been crowing for weeks that he was gonna ask Chloe to Homecoming. It wasn’t exactly a secret.
"Yeah, yeah," he muttered, shrugging his shoulders. "I really don't care if you ask her out or not," he told the guy. "Your problem now. I gave you the information, you can pine away if that's what you want, or you can do something about it." He doubted that Mateo would, at least not now. He didn't know Chloe, which Xander could understand, but sometimes not knowing someone was all the more reason. It had worked out well for him and Charlie. He'd ended up getting a family out of the deal on top of a girlfriend. He couldn't be blamed for trying to pay it forward.
“I’m not pining,” Mateo groused, writing down an answer of his own, tilting the paper to show Xander. It was a stupid assignment, but at least they had the excuse of working together to talk. Even if Xander was being infuriating. “I just wanted to see what the fuss was about.” He was flattered, and curious, and yeah, maybe a little attracted to Chloe. Didn’t mean he was going to do anything about it. The last thing he needed right now was a girlfriend. Not when he planned on working his ass off this year, and getting a scholarship. It was pretty much the only way he was getting to college. He looked up as a shadow appeared over their table, quirking an eyebrow at the girl who was standing there.
“Um,” she stammered, looking a little taken aback. “Sorry, uh, I was wondering if I could borrow a pen? Me and Chloe,” she gestured across the classroom, to where Chloe was sitting. Looking at them. “sort of both ran out. And we need to finish the assignment, so yeah...” This had seemed like such a good idea when she’d been sitting beside Chloe, watching Mateo ‘cute but totally oblivious’ Rodriguez making eyes at her across the room. Because seriously, Chloe had been pining after him for months. And she was never going to make a move. So someone had to.
Chloe's face was bright red. She forced her eyes back on her paper, trying not to feel like she was going to throw up and failing miserably. When Tonya got back, she was going to rip her head off and toss it out the window so help her god. She'd told her not to go up there, damn it. Now he likely thought they both were out of their damned minds and any chance she had with Mateo - which had been slim at best - was utterly impossible now. Fuck.
“Sure,” Mateo smiled at the girl, then looked across to Chloe. Who was blushing. And yeah, ok, that made him grin a little wider. He looked back up at the brunette standing over them, grabbing a couple of spare pens off his desk and handing them to her. “Tonya, right?” He asked, quirking an eyebrow. Tonya nodded, apparently having lost the ability to speak. Yeah, girls were weird. “Here. Don’t worry about bringing them back, I’ve got spares.” He watched as she squeaked out a ‘thankyou’, then turned and practically ran back to Chloe. Turning back to Xander, he quirked an eyebrow. “Ok, what the hell?” He muttered. “Girls are weird, dude.”
Xander sighed. "She's like bff's with Chloe. She's doing exactly what I was doing only the girl version. I bet in five minutes she shoves Chloe up here to return the pen." He was pretty sure that was exactly what would happen. Tonya would be lucky if Chloe didn't maul her. Not that it wouldn't be hilarious to watch if she did.
Mateo just shook his head. Yeah, he really didn’t understand girls. And likely never would. Mostly because they made no sense. If she liked him, why didn’t she just say something? “Guess we should probably try and get some of this assignment done, then, hunh?” He said quietly, clearly not enthused with the idea, at all. English wasn’t his thing. He got good grades - had to, if he wanted any shot at a scholarship - but he didn’t enjoy it. At all.
While the boys went back to work, Chloe was quietly chewing out her friend. "Have you lost your damn mind?" she asked her. "Now he thinks that I put you up to that." Which so didn't help her case. "What's your bright idea now, hmm?"
Tonya handed the pens to her friend with a flourish. “Now, you get to hand them back to Cutie McHotness at the end of class, and actually talk to the guy you’ve been crushing on for months. C’mon, girl, you know you wanna.” She waggled her eyebrows, grinning. She was a genius. Fact. “Plus, he’s totally been staring at you all through class today. He’s totally into you.”
"He is not," she muttered, taking the pens and staring down at them, trying not to think that those pens had just been in his hands about five seconds ago. She resisted - barely - the urge to sniff them. That would be weird. Creepy and weird. She sighed and her eyes flicked to the clock at the front of the room. Class would be over soon. Great. "I hate you, just so you know."
“You love me,” Tonya answered firmly, brushing her hair back from her face. “And I’m totally right. He’s staaaaring.” And he was. Though he looked away as soon as he caught Tonya’s eye. Really, it was adorable. Even if the obliviousness of both of them was totally boring. If it continued like this, she was going to have to plot with Xander. And no one wanted that.
Chloe was about ready to beat her with the nearest hard object, but eventually it was too close to the end of class and she'd have to suck it up and say hello to him long enough to return the damn pens. Fuck. She sighed and got up from the table, knowing if she didn't that Tonya would shove her up there. Swallowing down the butterflies that had flown up from her stomach into her throat, she made her way up to Mateo and Xander. She was tempted to drop the pens and run. So that was about what she did. "Thank you," she said, eyes on Xander more than Mateo because he was safer. She did briefly glance at Mateo though, flushing desperately. "Okay, yeah, bye."
Mateo looked up as Chloe walked over, kind of hoping she really hadn’t noticed him staring. Even if Xander and her friend had. Yeah, ok, possibly a futile hope. Didn’t stop him thinking it. He took the pens from her. “You’re welcome,” he said, smiling. Even if she was looking rather intently at Xander rather than him. “Hey, good luck for Homecoming,” he said, for lack of anything else. Hell, she deserved to win. And yeah, there might be a little part of him that was kind of hoping she’d be the queen to his king. If that happened, he might pluck up the courage to ask her out. Maybe. Possibly. If Xander nagged him.
That had her flushing more. And had her halted in her tracks in front of his desk. "Thanks," she said firstly, mustering up a little smile. "You too," she said. She knew he was nominated. And it would really stick it to Derek if he got it. And that thought shoved some courage into the girl and she leaned down a little, putting her lips close to his ear. "You deserve it way more than Derek," she breathed. Pulling back again, she smiled a bit more confidently.
He looked up as she stopped beside his desk. He was about to say ‘thanks’ for her good luck wish, but then she was leaning down beside him. He breathed in sharply, getting a noseful of her scent as her hair fell forward, her lips next to his ear. And wow, yeah, ok, there was definitely at least one part of him that was attracted to her. He had to fight the urge to purr, his jaguar making it clear that yes, she was definitely appealing. “Thanks,” he murmured hoarsely, doing his best not to let the beast take over too much. His eyes were probably a little closer to amber than brown by now, though.
"Guess I'll see you at the dance then," she said, trying not to sound hopelessly hopeful. As silly as it sounded. Now that she was close enough to get a proper smell of him too, her lioness was ready to claw through the entire classroom to get to him. He was a large cat too. She wasn't positive of the breed, but something big and feline for sure. And delicious. Which made her squeeze her thighs together and swallow. "Thanks again. Bye."
Mateo grinned, the expression probably a little more feral and a little less polite and friendly than it was intended to be. “Yeah, you will.” And if his cat had anything to do with it, she wouldn’t be leaving with Heller. He was a little freaked out, but doing his best not to show it - his beast had never reacted to anyone like that. “Bye,” he murmured, watching as she walked back over to Tonya and gathered up her things. Turning his attention back to his desk, he shoved his books into his bag, ignoring Xander’s knowing look. “Yeah, yeah,” he muttered. “Shut up, genius.”
Xander just smirked. "Told you so," he said as he gathered up his own things. "Also, here," he said, shoving a binder at Mateo. "Might want to uh... hold it in front of you," he teased. Well partially teased. It didn't take an idiot to know he totally had the hots for Chloe right back.
Grabbing the binder off his friend, Mateo gently smacked Xander round the back of the head with it. And then, yes, held it in front of his crotch as he shrugged his bag onto one shoulder. Just in case. He wasn’t actually hard, but Chloe’s smell still made it hard to think straight. Right now he was a very thin thread of self-control away from digging the pens she’d borrowed out of his bag and sniffing them.
Chuckling a little, Xander tossed his bag over his shoulder and grabbed his book just as the bell rang. "And I thought her googly eyes were bad," he commented. "The love bug got you." And even if it was teasingly spoken, he was hoping he was right. For Chloe's sake as much as Mateo's. But, he supposed, they'd see at the dance.
