Who: Xander and Mateo What: Divulging information When: 10.13.11 - Thursday Afternoon Where: The track field Warnings: Teenage boys being...teenage boys.
Xander had picked up a notebook for Chloe when she'd dropped it that morning before school. It was only then that he realized the girl totally had the hots for one of his friends. The damn notebook was covered with squiggly doodles and hearts and Mateo's name all over it. It was amusing but it lit up a thought in his head that he spent all day going over. On one hand, he should probably mind his business, but he just couldn't seem to keep his mouth shut. He wouldn't be sitting out today, feeling much better now than he even had yesterday. So before practice started, he made his way to Mateo. He had something to tell the guy and he might as well do it now.
"Hey," he said. "Dude, I know a girl who apparently has the hots for you."
Mateo was stretching out, holding his foot up against his ass, grimacing in the bright sunlight. One the one hand it was great that it wasn’t raining. On the other hand...give him some shade, any day. He jerked his head up in a sharp nod of greeting as Xander approached. It was nice to see his friend taking part in the practice - and he was looking a hell of a lot better than he had the last couple of days.
“Oh reallllly?” He smirked, just a little. He had no idea what Xander was talking about, considering the guy barely spent time with anyone except him and his new girlfriend. “Who?”
"My girlfriend's sister," he told him. "Don't ask how I know, but she totally does. Like she's got it bad." Ridiculously. Squiggles, hearts and Mrs. Chloe Rodriguez. Xander shook his head at the thought of that last one. Chloe was about the girliest thing in the universe - as if her car wasn't a big neon monument erected in testament to that fact. But squiggles and hearts?
Mateo frowned, trying to think. “Oh, no, yeah, I know her. She’s in my English class.” And she was cute, too. He hadn’t paid her that much attention, partly because he was pretty sure she was out of his league. And even after a few months, her dad had A Reputation. “And, see, you can’t do that,” he mock-glared at Xander. “You can’t say, “I know this thing, but you can’t ask me how I know. Way too mysterious, dude.”
"Okay, fine, I'll amend it to 'don't tell her or I'll kill you'," he told him. "She dropped a notebook this morning. I've been staying at her house because her dad's been real cool about all the bullshit going on with me and anyways, she drops this notebook and I picked it up and it's covered in little doodles with your initials and just goofy girly stuff like that. She'll kill me if she finds out I told you," he sighed. "But that's how I know."
Mateo laughed. “You’re scared of a girl. Awwww.” He was teasing, but he knew that the Richards girls were weres. If he was Xander, he’d be scared of Chloe, too. As it was, he could hold his own against her. Not that he was planning to, of course. Just because she thought he was cute, didn’t mean anything.
“So why tell me?” He asked, leaning one arm across his body, bringing the other arm up to grab the elbow, pull his arm taught. “You playing Cupid as well as Glinda, now?”
Xander rolled his eyes. "I have my reasons for being afraid of Chloe," he muttered, shaking his head a little. Like she was a lion who could bite his head off if she really got angry enough. Not that he really thought she would, but still. Chloe's whole family was scary, Charlie included, but it was Jason that terrified him the most, honestly.
"I'm telling you because she obviously isn't going to. She's going to be a girl and pine away and draw her name with your last name and wish you'd ask her out but you won't because you don't know she likes you. So call me cupid," he said, giving him a little shove. "Don't make me hex you."
Mateo laughed. “Yeah, because she’s a lioness that could eat your face for looking at her wrong.” New weres always stood out, in high school. Like the smell of hormones and Axe in the hallways wasn’t bad enough - throw in unfamiliar weres, and his jaguar went wild. He’d noticed Chloe enough at first because of her smell, but beyond that he hadn’t really paid attention. Maybe he should have.
“You make her sound real appealing there,” he pointed out. “And not at all like a creepy stalker.” It was flattering, yeah. But also a little wierd, considering he was pretty sure he’d never said two words to the girl.
Yeah, Chloe was really going to kill him now. Fuck. "She's not a stalker. It's not like she follows you around and watches you or anything. I think you'd have noticed that by now," he pointed out. "She just likes you, a lot. And you should do something about it because she's actually really nice," he shrugged. "And soon because she's going to homecoming with Derek Heller," he said, shaking his head. "That douche." He didn't like the guy. He thought he was a Ken doll or something. Xander was honestly pretty sure he was gay.
“So...she’s totally into me,” Mateo said, slowly, as if explaining to a particularly dim child. “But she’s going to Homecoming with the biggest asshole on the football team.” Yeah, Xander, that made sense. “Did you hit your head particularly hard this morning?” He switched arms, keeping an eye on the coach, just waiting on him yelling at both of them to get their asses in gear. “Homecoming’s tomorrow night, dude. It’s not like I can try and steal her away from him or anything.” Nor was he sure he wanted to, considering he barely knew her.
Xander rolled his eyes. "She's going with him because you didn't ask her," he explained, tempted to thwap the guy. "Chloe is in the running for homecoming queen. Like she's going to go alone to homecoming because the guy she likes doesn't know she exists. Whatever, now you know so you can do with the information what you will," he shrugged. It was up to Mateo if he liked Chloe or not anyway, but at least he'd given him enough to go on that he would notice her.
Shrugging, Mateo shook his arms loose, jogging on the spot. And now his attention was totally shot. Because yeah, now he thought about it, Chloe was hot. He’d just never considered asking her out before. “Whatever,” he muttered. It was too late to try and get her to go to Homecoming with him, even if he wanted her to. Besides which, he’d agreed to meet Darcy there. She’d broken up with her asshole boyfriend a couple of weeks before, and he hadn’t really been fussed about finding a date. It had worked out pretty well for both of them. He had someone to dance with, and he didn’t have to worry about picking her up or taking her home again.
“C’mon, Glinda. Let’s go, before Coach gives us extra laps.” Because yeah, that was the kind of day he was having.
Xander nodded and followed after Mateo. He didn't want to have any more laps either. He might be feeling better, but running around doing more laps than he had to wasn't something he wanted to do. He just hoped, silently, that Chloe didn't get wind of this conversation. Living with someone who was pissed at you and could shift and maul you to death wasn't something he wanted to experience. He shuddered at the thought and pushed it aside. It would be alright. Maybe.
