Rings and Circles
Who: Cathair, Elias and Max
What: Setting a trap for one cat and letting another out of the bag
When: 10/11 - Tuesday Evening
Where: Eli and Max’s place
Warning: None
Cathair had come prepared. While this was technically hunting, there was no risk to him involved. The circle had taken hours to prepare, since had to do himself and didn’t have any of the werecat in question’s blood or hair. Max had wandered off out of boredom several times, which he could understand, it wasn’t terribly interesting to watch someone chant and draw pictures on the floor for hours. He had gotten a bit of Cleo’s blood to strengthen the ward, while she wasn’t the same sort of werecat, she was a werecat and that would make it harder for this Artemis to break the circle. One last incantation and all the candles he had around the circle extinguished themselves. The marks glowed slightly in the dimness of the garage, which confirmed the circle was active.
The Irish witch settled back crossed legged, now pretty much completely exhausted,. Binding circles were a lot of work and required quite a bit of magic. He’d have given anything for another witch to work with him, two would have made it nearly unbreakable. But beggars couldn’t be choosers and it would hold for a night, especially if the sedative he brewed up worked as it was supposed to. Digging out a bottle of water he’d brought with him, Cathair’s voice was raspy and worn as he spoke. “It’s finished,” he said wearily between drinks. His throat was dry and raw, but he’d just been chanting for hours on end. It was to be expected. “Whatever you do, don’t step on any of the lines. Just drop her on the pallet in the middle and stay back.” She was a were, she could take a being chucked onto a mat. He took another drink of water before continuing. “The circle will activate the second she crosses it. You won’t be able to see the barrier, but it’s there.”
Elias had watched Cathair nearly the entire time he was working on the circle. Max might not have found it all that interesting, but Eli thought that it was entrancing how someone could create something out of just supplies and some chanting. Okay, a lot of chanting. He nodded at Cathair's words. "I think we can manage that," he said. Tossing her in the circle would be a lot less damage than she'd get if she wasn't getting this sort of treatment. As it was, she was going to be the luckiest cursed were around town. "Thank you," he told the man, brushing his hand through his hair. "I didn't know what else to do and I know she's going to resist. So tomorrow afternoon when she comes over, if she resists, we're gonna just have to put her out and toss her in there. I won't have her blood on my hands without at least trying to get her through one full moon and hoping she sees that it doesn't have to be a death sentence."
“She totally doesn’t want to die,” Max observed from the doorway through a mouthful of sandwich. “If she was ready to throw in the towel, she wouldn’t have asked for help. Everybody knows in the business that once you’re a were, you’re a were for life.” It didn’t matter what this chick was telling herself, if she really wanted to die, she’d have blown her own head off.” He thought he had a good point. “I just hope that holds long enough for her to come to her senses.” Inclining his head towards the kitchen behind him, he added. “You guys hungry?” he asked. “You missed supper and I made a few extras.”
Cathair nodded at both the younger men’s words. He couldn’t help but hope Max had a point, although the thought of becoming one of the monsters she’d hunted was likely making her unhinged. It was their worst nightmares, even his. The worst thing that could happen to a hunter was to lose their humanity, whatever that meant to each hunter. “I wish I could be here to help,” he admitted after another drink of water. “But I promised my fiancee I’d not take chances like that until after the wedding. She frets.” It took him a few tries to stand up, his legs were full on asleep and his back ached. “I’m getting too bloody old for it anyways.” He gave them a wry smile. “I’ll take a pass on the sandwich though. Thanks, but I’ve given up bachelor eating. I’m sure Rebecca won’t let me go to bed without a proper meal.”
Elias offered out a hand to Cathair to at least get him up off of the floor. He felt a little badly for the guy spending the whole damn afternoon and well into the evening helping the pair of them out. It was all for a good cause, however, and he kept telling himself that. "Thanks again," he told him. "For all the help. It's better than having to keep her overly chained." Elias didn't want to make this any more painful for Artemis than he had to. They were trying to save the girl, not hurt her. "I suppose we should let you get home before she starts hunting us down then, huh?"
“Yeah,” Max agreed. “You’ve done enough, man. We can take it from here.” He knew Cath would probably worry, but they could handle it. Especially with the magical trump card they had now. “Yeah, get out of here and go see your woman. Somebody should get a homecooked meal and cuddling out of this.” He wasn’t inviting Jayne over tonight. She wasn’t feeling good because she was on the rag and he didn’t want to drag her out of her comfy bed because he wanted cuddles from his wife.
He nodded to Elias. “No worries,” he told them. “Glad to help really. The first full moon is the hardest one for any cursed were. She’s luckier than most. She’ll not accidentally butcher someone or the like. That’ll hopefully help her conscience as well. Good luck.” They had a nigh impossible task ahead of them in convincing a former militant hunter who’d been cursed that she wasn’t better off dead. “I’ll likely get put on the couch if I’m much later,” he admitted wryly as he started gathering up his gear. “And not just by her. It’s nearly bedtime and she’s not the only demanding lady in my life.” Once he’d packed up. “If you need any help or if something happens to the ward, ring me. I’ll give what help I can. Cheers.” He was glad to be done and heading home to Becky, no matter how concerned he was about leaving the Laskos alone with a were.
Elias saw Cathair out of the house and sighed as he closed the door behind the man. "Well, precautions are all taken care of and we've got some stuff to knock her out if she won't listen to reason," he told his brother. "I think I'm more worried about what's going to happen when she wakes up the day after." No doubt Artemis was going to be ready to kill someone, likely the both of them. Still, it was two against one and Elias was confident that he and Max could handle the task at hand. He'd be damned if he involved Ophelia in the mess. She certainly wouldn't help the situation considering her strong personality would just clash with Artemis'. That wouldn't help a bit. "I'm starved," he muttered. "And glad that head trauma doesn't make witches. That shit looked hard."
Max handed Elias a sandwich. “I can’t believe you watched him the whole time,” he told his brother. “From what Jayne tells me it’s hereditary. Like being a medium. One of her parents was a witch and the other saw dead people. So Jayne’s a witch and Rupert’s a medium. Swannie too. So yeah, inherited thing.” Probably another reason Elias would never want kids. He knew none of his sibs had, and it had always been understood if anybody in the family was reproducing on purpose, it would probably be Max. That hadn’t changed. Especially now since he and Jayne were married. They would eventually do the kid thing. It was in the cards. So it wasn’t like Eli or Phee had to worry about carrying on the family name or that shit. He had it covered.
"I wanted to see how he did whatever it was that he was going to do," Elias said as he took the sandwich from his brother. He took a bite and headed through to the living room, plopping himself down on the sofa. "That mean when you and Jayne have babies you're going to end up with little witches?" he teased, leaning back against the cushions of the couch with a tired sigh. He would be content to just sleep for the rest of the day if he thought he could get away with it, but as it was, he needed to stay up and go to sleep at a decent time so he could make it through were-sitting.
He followed his brother into the living room, stuffing the last bite of his sandwich into his mouth. He washed it down with his beer before plopping down on the couch next to Elias. “Kind of a letdown,” he admitted. “It’s not very exciting. Just a bunch of chanting.” He’d seen it before, and Cath had been chanting for a long damned time. So he’d gone and watched TV and texted back and forth with Jayne.
Max couldn’t help the grin at the mention of little witches. “Yeah,” he said. “I want a little girl we can name Tabitha who Jayne can teach to wiggle her nose. She can totally do it. It’s hot.” He took another drink of his beer to hide the sappy grin. “Someday.”
While he would have been content to make a comment on little witches and nose wiggling, when Max took that drink, Elias was caught off guard by the ring on his brother's left ring finger. His eyes widened and he just sort of stared at him. "Max," he finally began, eyes still on the ring - which was huge, mind - for a brief moment before he let them slide up to meet his brother's eyes. "Since when do you wear rings?" he questioned. "Especially ones that look a hell of alot like a wedding band."
This is what he got for being left handed. Max never wore jewelry period, except for occasionally those sporty bracelets that velcroed closed. They came off easy if grabbed in a fight. He hadn’t expected Elias to notice, but yeah, the ring was kind of big and obvious. “Jayne got it for me,” he explained, not sure if he wanted to admit it just yet. Except Elias was his twin and he needed to tell somebody. “It is a wedding band. We-” Yeah, this was harder than he was expecting. “We eloped. Last night. That’s where we were.”
Elias stared at his brother in disbelief. Married? Married?! He wasn't really sure that he should be entirely surprised because it had been obvious from the first time that he'd heard about Jayne that Max was head over heels for the girl, but married? Pushing his hand through his hair as if that would make his brain work again, Elias drew in a breath and shook his head a little. "Oh, wow," he commented. "I thought you guys left and went to her place to give me and Calli some space or something or that you took her home and came back. I didn't think you were out getting married. Why didn't you tell me last night, Max? I woulda gone, I would have supported you." Which sort of hurt as an afterthought. They'd shared a womb and yet he wasn't even at his brother's wedding? His twin's wedding. "Her brother was okay with that?"
“We kind of did,” he said. “We stayed at a hotel until like ten am, then I took her home. Aunt Flo came to visit her this morning and she’s a real bitch from how miserable Jayne is. I hovered over her as long as she’d let me, then came home.” Max took a drink of his beer, nearly choking on it when Eli asked why he didn’t tell him. “You were kinda busy when we left, bro,” he pointed out with a chuckle. The question about her brother sobered him. “We haven’t told him yet,” he said. “She wants to wait until this weekend. Because he’s going to flip out. Especially now. I don’t think she can deal with his freak out when the cramps have her curled up into a fetal ball.” They could wait a bit. It wasn’t going to kill anybody.
"Oh damn," Elias said, shaking his head a little. "You coulda waited til we were done or yelled at me," he pointed out. Busy or not, he'd have finished up and put some damn pants on to go see his brother get married. But there wasn't any point in swelling on it because it was done and over with now. When he said Rupert didn't know, Elias winced a little. "Well, fuck," he muttered, facepalming because damn that wasn't going to go over well. Jayne was eighteen though, so at least there was that. Dropping his hand again, he shrugged a little. "Guess he can't do much about it," he told his twin. "You're happy though, right?" he said, knowing well and good that he was by the way he'd been smiling all day, which made more sense now. "That's what matters. People who love each other get married so, congratulations. I'm happy for you."
“We did it for us, Eli,” he told his brother. “Because it felt right. We’ll do something bigger for the family later on. We’ve got time. Then you can be my best man and Rupert can give her away and everybody will be as happy as we are.” Yeah, he was happy. He wished he could move Jayne in like today, but between how miserable she was feeling and they’d already promised to help Artemis, it was going to have to wait. No big deal. “Yeah, never been happier in my life,” he agreed. “Thanks.”
It made sense for them to do things their own way and if he was being honest with himself, it was definitely something with 'Max' written all over it. Since Jayne seemed to share a brain with his brother, it wasn't really all that much of a surprise. "So how was it?" he asked him, flashing his brother a smile. "Married man and all, you probably don't kiss and tell, huh?"
Max laughed and gave his brother a look. “Like I’m going to give you a blow by blow of my wedding night?” he said. “Not anymore, I don’t. Stop thinking about my wife that way, ya perv.” He was glad Eli wasn’t really upset with him. He didn’t expect him to be, but there was always a chance he’d been hurt they’d run off and eloped without warning. The last thing he wanted was to alienate anybody’s family here.
Elias was a smidgen hurt, but he'd get over it. So long as they did a bigger wedding later on and he could be Max's best man, it didn't matter much to him. His brother was happy, happier than he'd ever seen him and damn it, he deserved that happiness. He chuckled at Max's teasing and shook his head. "Like I need a blow by blow when I can hear the girl all the way upstairs. Honestly, I'm pretty sure I likely heard her from the hotel room last night," he teased.
They would. But that would take time to plan and stuff and they could get everybody’s input and make a big deal out of it and it’d be awesome. He was definitely happy. “I’d apologize for that, but I’m not sorry,” he said, taking another drink of his beer. “She’s talked about soundproofing spells. So I’ll have her look into that, so we can spare your delicate sensibilities.” Jayne was his wife now. Hello, completely guilt free sex. Not that he’d had any guilt before. Now it was like required and he liked that requirement. He was definitely a happily married man now.
He shook his head a little, but smiled all the same. "Yeah, I think soundproofing is a good idea. Might need to do the same for mine actually," he admitted. "Calli's not as loud as witchy-poo, but yeah. Our neighbors are going to think that we have wild sex riots all the time if we're not careful." He was actually pretty surprised the police had yet to be called.
“Didn’t hear a thing,” he teased Eli. “But then, Jayne was screaming in my ears, so I wasn’t hearing anything but us anyway.” He was a little surprised nobody had called the cops, but considering what Jayne was screaming, people probably realized they were just having crazy loud sex. “Yeah, we’ll do that. Because it’s not like I’m moving out or anything right off. She’ll probably move in.” It wasn’t like they were going to start popping out kids right off. He liked living with Elias and it made feel better than Jayne wouldn’t be alone even if he was at work and she was home here.
He was glad that Max wasn't moving out. He didn't want him to. He wouldn't have stopped him if that was what he decided, but Elias never was the sort that liked to be alone and Max was his twin. Of course he wanted him to stay. Hell, if he let Jayne move in that would be just peachy too. "Cool," he said, nodding a little. "She's welcome here. She practically lives here already anyway." The girl was there anytime she didn't have school and sometimes when she did. Giving in and having her just live there seemed like it should be the next step, especially since they were married. "If you need to go be with her, I'll understand," he told his brother. "I mean it's one were, I can handle it. I feel kinda shitty keeping you from your girlfr-," he stopped himself and chuckled a litle. "I mean your wife."
He’d never been far from Elias. Ever. They were twins. It just felt right to live with him. Especially since he and Jayne got along fine. “Yeah, I figured you wouldn’t mind,” he said. “Since she’s here all the time. So long as we do something about the soundproofing.” He took another drink of his beer. “Nah, she already kicked me out because I was hovering over her and fussing. And I don’t care if you can handle one were. You’re my brother, I have your back. I promised to help. I’ll just text her all night long until she stops answering and everybody will be fine.”
Elias chuckled a little. "Definitely married," he commented. "You're already henpecking her. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around," he teased, casting a knowing look at his brother. Max had always been the mother hen and Jayne certainly wasn't going to escape it, not being his wife.
Max chuckled himself. “Because we’ve done anything the way everybody else does?” he reminded Elias. “She proposed to me, thank you. It was really sweet.” And now he was getting all dopey smile again. He was hopelessly in love and beyond trying to hide it. And glad he didn’t have to from his twin.
"Awwwww!" Elias laughingly teased. "You couldn't even propose to the girl first? Man, that's bad. She's wearing the pants in the relationship already." He was quite obviously joking, but he sort of ducked regardless, not wanting to get whacked for his teasing remarks.
He wasn’t mad but joking around with Elias was fun and he’d run with it. He picked up a throw pillow off the couch (Jayne being the only reason they even had throw pillows) and whacked his twin with it. “She suggested it, then I asked her if she was asking me to marry her, then she did,” he said, because he kind of was still giddy over it and needed to share. “I can’t remember which one of us came up with the ‘Let’s go elope tonight.’ but I did get down on one knee and propose right when we decided to.” As for Jayne wearing the pants, he chuckled and took a drink of his beer. “She can wear the pants all she wants, so long as I get into them.” He gave his brother a pointed, dirty grin.
His brother was ridiculously in love with this witch. Shaking his head a little, he tucked the throw pillow behind him on the sofa. "I think you prefer her in skirts," he commented. "I know that's what I like Calli in and their legs are just about as long as each other's," he chuckled. Figures they'd go for girls with long legs. At least they had some things in common.
Max groaned. “Don’t talk about long legs in short skirts,” he said. “We mythbusted the whole ‘orgasms are good for cramps’. Which worked for about ten minutes after and then it started again. So I should probably just let her rest until her body is done making her miserable.” Which just made the separation over the next few days easier and harder.
Elias didn't want to think about Jayne on her period so he kept his mouth shut about orgasms being good for cramps. "Yeah," he agreed, nodding a little. "Probably a good idea. Is it really that bad though? I mean sounds like the girl is dying over at her place the way you talk about it." He sort of felt bad for her.
Yeah, Max was less squeamish about this shit. He’d seen a lot worse than a little blood coming out of his wife. Been covered in it more times than he wanted to admit. But watching her be miserable was way worse, especially when he couldn’t do anything to make her feel better. “It looks like she is,” he admitted. “She swears it’s always been like this and that doesn’t make me feel any better. I am so glad I am not a girl.”
Scrunching his nose, Elias shook his head. "That blows," he commented. "Well, Artemis isn't going to be here til tomorrow," he told him. "You could always go snuggle her til then," he offered. He was feeling pretty bad for not only Jayne but for Max because he looked almost as miserable as Jayne likely felt.
“I’ll call her and see if she wants to try to sneak me in,” he said. “We’re kind of still tiptoeing around Rupert and you know he might not go for sleepovers.” He shrugged. “I’ll pick her up from school if she goes or go over there awhile tomorrow. Fuss over her as long as she’ll let me.” He was and he wasn’t. He wanted to hold her and comfort her, but he didn’t want Rupert getting wind of anything until Jayne was ready to tell her brother. She sure as hell wasn’t ready when her body was trying to divorce her.
Elias nodded. "Sounds like a plan. Well, I guess I'll let you do that then," he said. "I should probably call Calli and see what she's up to before she thinks I died or something," he laughed. The circle had taken a long time to complete and he hadn't really been able to talk to her much that day so he might as well give her a ring and check in with her. "Tell Jayne congratulations. Oh, and by the way," he said, getting up from the sofa. "I'm so not telling Ophelia. Good luck with that one."
“God yes,” he said. “One of us should not be sitting around watching TV pining for his woman.” He grinned at his brother. “I will. I’m sure it’ll make her feel better you’re okay with it.” That was one family member who they didn’t have to worry about. He let out a snort. “I’m not telling Phee. Not yet. She can find out when we do the big official wedding. Then she’ll be more upset about being stuck in a dress and wedding cooties than the fact I’m getting married.”
"Good idea," he commented. "I sure as shit don't wanna be involved in telling her anything. You know she can get." Ophelia was their sister and Elias loved her and would die for her if need be, but she could be a real bitch on wheels when she wanted to and usually she wanted to. "Call your wife," Elias told Max and then flashed him a smile before heading off to his room. Apparently the Laskos had just gained another member of the family.
