In Plain Sight (Jo, Ellen, prompt #40)
Title: In Plain Sight
Characters/Pairing: Jo, Ellen
Rating: G
Word Count: 240
Challenge/Prompt: #40 - haunted
Summary: Jo sees the look in her mother's eyes
Jo sees the look in her mother's eyes, that haunted, desperate gaze. "What do I care?" she says. "Go off, get yourself killed. Just like your father. I don't care."
And Jo knows she doesn't mean it but it still stings, still hurts enough to take her breath away. "At least he didn't hide," she shouts, hearing her voice become high and shrill. "He didn't pretend. At least he wasn't a coward!"
"Oh, that's what you think I am?" says Ellen, her mouth curling in disgust. She steps closer, her face deadly, and Jo inhales sharply. "You think it's cowardly, to keep a home going, to run a business, to raise a child? All by yourself, no one to help you, while your husband's off fighting god knows what, doing god knows what? You really think I was the one who was hiding?"
Jo steadies herself. "You can't stop me," she says, trying hard not to sound as scared as she is.
"No," says her mother. "No, I can't." She stares at the ground for a long moment, and Jo can see the lines around her eyes. She looks so very tired.
"You can't stop me," says Jo, again, sounding even less convincing.
"No," Ellen says, but more gently this time. She sighs. "Good luck, Jo," she says, as she turns to walk away. "Call me," she says.
And Jo stands and waits, hoping, longing, but her mother doesn't look back.
