She was on a mission. Her mind was set and there was no way to change it. Mercedes Jones was quitting the glee club. Almost nobody knew. Tina did, of course. And it was only because of Tina that Mercedes had prolonged her decision to quit. She told Tina she would rethink her choice… and she did. She thought about it for a few days and still wanted to quit. Like she’d told Tina, she sang because she felt it in her heart and soul to do so. Unfortunately, she wasn’t feeling it anymore. So she didn’t see the point of being there. She’d already quit everything else she was involved in that required singing – glee club was just the last thing on her list. New Directions no longer gave her any direction. And as much as it should have hurt her to cut it all off – she didn’t feel a thing.
Mercy walked into Mr. Schuester’s office after knocking lightly and being granted permission to come in. “Mercedes! Hey – what can I help you with?” He held an encouraging smile on his face as he looked into Mercy’s blank face and hollow stare.
“I’m quitting glee club.”
“Wait, what? I – why?!” Mercedes almost wanted to laugh at the way he pretended to care. But the laugh never surfaced.
“Because there’s no point in me being there anymore. I joined glee because I didn’t fit in. I felt alone… lonely, friendless… It helped for a while but at this point, I’m pretty much back to square one.” She told him, her voice still empty.
“But Mercedes. We need you to –“
“Bullshit.”
“… What?” He asked, clearly taken aback by the word she’d just said.
“Bullshit. I said bullshit. You don’t need me. The only person you need for that club is Rachel Berry, apparently. I mean, that’s the only thing you’ve made clear these last two years.” She stared at him for a moment. “No – you know what? You probably do need me… to make up the right amount of backup singers for Rachel when you all go to Nationals. It’s a damn shame I don’t give enough of a fuck about Nationals to stay around, isn’t it?”
“Whoa - Mercedes language! And that is not true. Everyone in glee club is needed equally.”
“Please! You haven’t taken much of anyone’s opinion into account. Rachel’s, however? You always take into account. Rachel’s your golden child. Why? I don’t even fucking know because there are a ton of better voices in there. Santana’s, Puck’s, Artie’s, Tina’s… Kurt’s.” She didn’t even know why she put Kurt’s name in there, right now. “I really hope that you realize the talent you have that could dance circles around Rachel Berry. If you just opened your damn eyes and ears, you’d pick somebody else to lead you guys to Nationals. You don’t even fathom the damage you could do with… Santana in the lead. I mean, Kurt would love –“ She stopped herself and shook her head.
“I take everyone into account, Mercedes. Everyone has had leads in this club. Everyone gets a chance. And I – we need –“
“I’m gonna stop you again, Schue, because you keep spewing out blatant lies. I’m done with glee club. I’m done with damn near every single person in glee club. And… I’m done with singing. For the last few weeks, since school started really – I’ve been going through the worst time of my life. My parents are this close – “ she put her hand up and held her forefinger and thumb less than an inch apart. “to killing each other every night. And it only gets worse as the days go by.” she let her hand fall back down. “I’ve gotten news that my brother has cancer. Cancer, Mister Schue…” She could feel her voice break. “The idea of losing my brother – my only brother and the person who has protected and been there for me every moment of my life – haunts me every day.” Mercedes took a deep breath and shook her head. “I’ve been dealing with my own health issues. I’ve gotten arrested for something I didn’t even do. I’ve probably disappeared off the face of the earth for a couple weeks and I’m sure you’ve noticed because, I mean, you’re one of my teachers. On top of all that – I lost my best friend and boyfriend in a matter of weeks. To each other. And the only person who’s managed to make me feel like they give an actual shit is Tina.” She let him take it all in for a second. “You don’t give a damn about me, Schue. I’m just another student in the crowd, another voice in the background.”
Mercedes stood there, watching Mr. Schuester as he took all of that in. He opened his mouth to speak again and Mercy held up her hand. “I want to say my own goodbye to the club, if you don’t mind. I’m asking you to allow me to sing one more time for the glee club – for a club I am no longer a part of.” She sighed softly and lowered her head. “Maybe it’ll give me faith in singing again. And help me deal.”
She watched Mr. Schuester as he lowered himself into his seat again, and silently thought about what she’d said and her request. He didn’t say anything for a while, and then. He sighed heavily and nodded, his face covered in confusion or frustration – Mercy couldn’t tell. “Sure, Mercedes. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we're sad to see you go.”
Mercy nodded to him. “Thank you, Mr. Schue. I’ll tell them all together, that I’m leaving. And… I hope you really think about all that I said.” With that, she turned and walked out of his office. She didn’t want to hear anything else, she didn’t want to see him facial expressions, she just wanted to leave. She walked right out of the office and down the hallway, pulling out her phone to shoot a text to her, uh, drug dealer. She needed some weed. Stat.
She hadn't paid any attention to the people she passed by. She wasn't looking around for a friend, like usual. She just walked. And then she finally made it out of the school. She stopped walking and took a deep calming breath. Then she opened her eyes and started walking towards her car.
