Football Game #3: Vs. Lakewood
Date: Sept 9, 7pm
Where: Lakewood Football Stadium; Lakewood, OH
Who: Everyone (add your tags even if you don't post so we know who was there.)
Warnings: None (add warnings to subject lines where applicable.)
Summary: The Lakewood enforcers were huge.
Lakewood was an hours drive north of Lima, and the bus ride up was filled with testosterone. Beiste used to the time to go over the plays, deciding who would start and who would be benched. Karofksy was still out, doctor's orders, until the stitches healed. One of their wide receivers was out, suspended due to fighting, so she was down not one, but two players.
She had two quarterbacks who had proven themselves time and again for the team, and it didn't sit right with her benching one of them each game. She was going to need to make a decision soon, because no team could keep winning with two quarterbacks. She could move Hudson to RB or even wide receiver, he was big enough and fast enough. Evans could make the switch to tight end easily. The problem was high school boys put all their stock into being the QB, it was the biggest status symbol and the natural leader for the team. She was stuck between a bull and a rodeo clown.
The bus pulled into the opposing school, and was already filled with cars of people who'd come out to see both teams regardless of the weather. The thunderstorms had cleared up, but it was still drizzly. It was going to be muddy miserable playing conditions, and would change the whole course of the game. She'd seen teams at the top of their game fail because of a little rain. Her team was stronger than that, and she'd trained them through slush, snow and rain last year. This year, Lima had had a run of good weather but she knew they were up to the challenge.
When they were all headed into the locker room, she pulled Hudson aside. After a brief conversation, she had herself a new wide receiver for the game. He knew the plays, and she often had her boys switch up positions in practice to get the feel of the field from different perspectives. She pounded him on the back and went to tell Evans he would be QB. A few more quick changes, including promoting one of her JV players to temporarily fill in for Karofsky, and they had a battle plan.
First Half:
The field is very muddy. The Lakewood players are big, fast and strong. They're also brutal, but the Titans can hold their own. Both teams score early in the game, the Titans with a spectacular pass by Sam, caught by Finn who made the touchdown. At the start of the 2nd period, the score is 7-10, Lakewood advantage. The 2nd period is even more brutal, with the rain starting to come down harder. It's not thundering and lightening, so they keep playing. Puck scores a beautiful touchdown towards the end of the 2nd period, making the score 14-10. The period ends without any more scores. Miraculously, there are no injuries this half!
Half Time:
The Cheerios put on their best show, despite the weather, and the crowd is upbeat and cheering loudly. Ohioans take their football seriously.
Second Half:
The boys come out; bruised, muddy, but enthused. The 3rd period was a stalemate, and Azimio and Strando are both injured during the defensive plays. Nothing major, but they're out for the rest of the game. At the 4th, the score is still 14-10. The rain has stopped to a drizzle, but it's still enough to be muddy and miserable. The 4th period starts, and after a really impressive play with Matt and Mike at the center, the score is 21-10, Titans advantage. During their offensive play, Lakewood manages another touch down and field goal, tying the score at 21-21. With 5 minutes left, the Titans have one last chance to pull ahead. After collaboration, Sam and Finn agree on a play, and...dun dun....TOUCHDOWN TITANS (scored by Sam)!
TITANS WIN AGAIN! 28-21. (And with no injuries except for Azimio & Strando; and Matt managed to get a minor hamstring injury)
