The sky was clear, sun just a shade too warm for comfortable, but it was perfect for the work he was doing. His back, pale even through his well earned tan, shown with the layer of sweat that the work always brought. His basket lay to the left of him, filling with the basket with early season strawberries. He smiled, remembering Quinn's threats of terrifying cravings.
Quinn was home, readying the jars with labels for the preserves the early summer fruit harvest would give them. He headed back toward the house with two large baskets in his arms. The open fields were filled with their little family's hard work. Jadyn, Quinn and He were the parents of this land. He looked toward the road, no sign of Jadyn's return yet. His soul ached for her to return, but whenever one of they three were apart this happened. His Jadyn, wild passionate woman who kept both he and Quinn on their toes always left the house a little more quiet. He opened the door to the mud room and kicked off the dirt-packed boots. He set the baskets down on the long table where they did all of the canning in the kitchen. He started to wash them, popping one into his mouth. He smiled, sadness touching his eyes as he remembered picking wild berries with his twin forever ago at the commune. A familiar ache thudded through him. With Cas gone there was an empty hole in his soul that could never fill, even by his wonderful women.
"Quinn. I'm back with strawberries."
Surprisingly, at least to herself, Quinn rather enjoyed working away in the kitchen. She’d adapted to the life of a farm hand fairly well, if she did say so herself. She enjoyed the outdoors so much more with her partners to share it with, felt invigorated with the life they led because she was sharing it with two such lively people. She hummed a little as she set out the jars, etching labels by hand for each one and the start of the summer season, just as she heard Pollux return.
“Stop eating them,” she chided gently, smiling even as she moved through the kitchen to meet him at the table. “They’re not meant for snacking.” Even with Jadyn currently away, the quiet stillness of the house slightly saddening, but Quinn understood both Pollux’s and Jadyn’s needs to depart from time to time. It allowed her the space to decorate further, since she preferred doing it without the distraction of her vivacious lovers.
“I spoke to Brittany recently,” Quinn mentioned, wandering barefoot through the house, leaning onto Pol’s shoulder and wrapping her arms around his waist, “we’re going to meet for a while, maybe have a girls week in California,” and usually that meant the pair of them having their way with Los Angeles, “you’ll take me, right?” She wanted to make sure she saw Brittany before she got further along, before her hormones got the best of her, before she started showing, before she started worrying about traveling her preferred way of travel and the potential effects on their child.
And really, she wanted to have a good old fashioned shopping spree with her best friend.
Pollux kissed at her chin, pressing lazy kisses all the way to her ear. He snatched another from the basket using his oh so clever distraction. He pressed the sweetness to her lips. Once her teeth dug into the fruit before whispering. "You're an accomplice now."
"Of course I'll take you. I have a few things to discuss with her anyway. I've heard rumbles from New York that I want to keep tabs on."
With a mocking glare, Quinn just chewed happily on her strawberry, swiping her finger over her bottom lip to catch some of the juice. “Well, she’s got some time off later this month, so I’m sure you can fit in a little strategy meeting before we have our girly time.” Quinn only fretted mildly these days with all of Pollux’s plans and schemes with the different whispers that were flying around. She trusted that both he and his contacts knew what they were doing.
And naturally Jadyn watched out for them where she could.
Wrapping her arms around his waist, pressing herself to his back, Quinn watched him finish washing off the fruit as she perched her chin on his shoulder. “I’m going to call Puck sometime this week,” she murmured, “I’m practically bursting to tell people, but I want him to hear first.” If only so that she didn’t feel terrible for not being the one to tell him. “And then, well, then we can just go to a rooftop somewhere and yell it, hmm?”
"How about New York? You can tell him in person and them we can yell from the top of a sky scraper." He placed the berries out on the dry cloth covering the table. He began to sort them, tossing a few under ripe into a separate pile and the slightly malformed into another.
"Make sure you get a place with organic product for your girly indulgences." Pollux was still a hippy. Their farm house ran on solar energy from the water heater to the lights. It meant that energy could be stored and that they had to take care of the panels every few months, but it calmed him. If they didn't need to be plugged into any government run system they wouldn't be.
“Really?” She wasn’t entirely sure if this was a conversation she could have with Puck face to face, but then, it wasn’t like they were still teenagers. They were both settled, both happy, both grown ups now. “That would be nice, we could drop in on Rachel and Jaime,” Quinn’s arms tightened on Pollux’s waist before her next words, “check on Dave and Kody.” She knew it was still difficult for Pol, it was difficult for everyone, but especially Pol. She wanted desperately to help, but she knew that realistically, there wasn’t really anything more she could do.
“Of course, dear,” she sing-songed it, smirking a little, “nothing chemically altered will be entering my body, I promise.” Really, she was fond of organic produce; growing their own food, working their land to benefit them, even just the power they generated for themselves, it made Quinn all the more aware of just what they were capable of doing for themselves.
“But I’ll warn you now, the last time, I craved bacon like it was going out of style,” she’d mostly taken to a more vegetarian of diets, the occasional piece of meat working its way into her diet mostly by pure accident. “I’ll apologize, but porky might be sacrificed for the greater good here.”
"Yes... It would be good to see him." Pollux's throat tightened at the mention of his brother's soul-bound. He knew the broken man Dave had been right after Castor's death. He knew the loss of memory was better for him and Kody but... There were days he wished he could just sit and talk to someone who knew what happened. Someone who loved Cas just as much for all the good and the bad. He loved his women dearly, but he never wanted or let himself talk about the sides of Castor and his relationship that were... sexual. They knew, of course they knew. He didn't deny them any part of his being but he still couldn't talk about it. It was the one and only sexual taboo his mother and father had tried to instill in him. The only one that he had tried to deny in himself. It had always been a mistake, denying himself what his heart wanted.
Pollux turn in her arms to press a hand over her stomach. "We will have to feed the beastie somehow."
There was a pleasant stutter in her stomach as his hand rested over her womb, the warm swelling in her heart at the tangible reminder of just what they’d made. For all that she and Pollux had created a life, it was the three of them who would cultivate that life and Quinn couldn’t help but be giddy at the prospect of it.
But she knew that they needed to keep their bonds tied with those around him; her with the past and her previous child, he with the continued torn strings of his heart from Castor’s death. New York was a good idea, for both of them. Threading her fingers through his over her stomach, she just smiled softly. “Maybe Jay will be back, we can kidnap Luka and Rora for the day.” If only because Quinn desperately adored the children.
"She will be home soon. I'm sure she'd want to see Jaime and torture Rachel." He chuckled deeply, the pang in his heart from Jadyn's missing presence soothed by the knowledge that she would return. "Not for too long. It's Summer." They all knew the importance of this season for the farm.
“Of course, but all work and no play, make Pollux a grumpy boy.” Summer was important, yes, Quinn understood it all very well now. It took a while, but she’d gotten into the swing of things, enjoying the therapy of it all. “We’ll have a good season and stock up and still have time to visit friends and do our work and enjoy ourselves.” Regardless of the importance of this season, she refused to let him lose himself into work, even to stave off grief or to avoid things.
“And I might have to steal all the fruit; we know the importance of natural nutrients for expectant mothers.”
Pollux pressed a kiss to her lips for the simple pleasure of his Quinn being closer to him. "You always make sure I get to play."
Quinn hummed softly, leaning in to nuzzle a little against Pol’s cheek. “Someone has to, and Jadyn isn’t here right now,” not that any of them really had trouble taking the time away from seriousness. “Do you want to finish with the strawberries now? Or can I distract you?”
Pollux hummed, pretending to consider the options. They both knew his responsible side would always win over impulse when Jadyn was away. "Strawberries first and then we can get 'cleaned up' in the bath."
It wasn’t a surprise, and Quinn wasn’t in the least bit offended, Jadyn was just that touch more aggressively overt about things. “You’re very lucky that I’m a secure and confident woman,” Quinn joked, moving to help with the strawberries anyway. “Or else I might just end up with a complex.” Despite the fact that Jadyn and Pollux were the sole reasons that Quinn was past that stage in her life, she was still able to poke fun at it.
