Narrative - Figuring things out
Who: Brittany
When: Monday Night, 26th March
Where: Park & then around Lima
What: Britt found a way to figure out just what happened to the X-Ray vision power, and what she's got now.
Since everyone at school had powers, Brittany knew that if she wanted to stay at school, she had to have powers. Right then, she didn't think she did. Her powers had been fun at first, they'd just sort of happened more often than not and she totally got a kick out of them. She could do the super hard routines for cheerleading easily and she totally rocked at beam gymnastics. But then she'd been Pollux, and teleporting was cool, but it was kind of hard too. It was all about focus and calm and stuff and Britt just wasn't all that good at that. And when she got her body back from Kurt, she didn't have her proper powers, instead she had the X-ray vision.
Britt wasn't so keen on that. Sure it was cool at first; seeing through walls, catching people naked sometimes, watching movies through walls, guessing which cup had the peanut in it. That was all fun for the first few days. But the headaches she sometimes got were brutal, worse than when she'd hair flipped too much and her brain was rattling, or when she wiped out on her bike at motorcross and landed on her head. Then her eyes burned for ages after using the power and she started to wish she could get those dark glasses that blind people got just to keep out the light.
The X-ray vision just went away though, as quickly as it seemed to be there it just vanished and Britt was left wondering if this was her 'normal' now. If she was back to being boring and plain and not like all her friends. She wondered if she could fake a super power, just so she could stay at school with Santana and Quinn and Artie (if he stayed) and the others. She didn't want to go to some other school with boring people.
She'd tried setting up a beam over the pool in the back yard, but her dad had yelled at her to stop messing around, the pool would be took cold just now, so she had to cover it all back up. She didn't want to fall off a fence and bust her head up like she did in gymnastics when she was eight, so that ruled out coping Charity when she sauntered over the garden fence to attack a bird. So, on Monday night, Brittany told her parents that she was going over to Santana's house, that she'd be back later and not to worry about her. They usually just let her stay at Santana's anyway.
The park seemed like the best idea. They had a few areas fenced off, probably because they were re-landscaping or something, and the place was mostly deserted. Wandering through the dark, cool park to the climbing frame, Brittany tried to figure out if she should go to Santana or Quinn or someone for help with this. They would probably have better ideas, they'd know how to work something out to figure out what Britt's power might be, if she still had one.
Grabbing a hold of the bars on the frame, Britt pulled her legs up, hooking them over the bar and hanging upside down from it. Maybe she could ask Artie to use his power on the adults before he left, make them all believe that Brittany had a power, that she was special still and she could stay with them. But she'd be useless to her team if she had to use her fake power, since she didn't have one, and they could like, lose a competition or something because she was lying and she really didn't want to do that.
And the adults all had weird super powers, like they knew things that no one told them. Maybe they already knew that Brittany didn't have a power any more, maybe they took her power away from her. She didn't think she'd done anything that would deserve getting her power taken away, it wasn't like she meant to spy on people or anything, she just sometimes turned her power on when she didn't mean to and saw things. She'd tell them that and they'd understand right? 'Cause they were meant to be showing her how to use her powers not taking them away from her because she didn't know yet. And these were new powers, so it wasn't really her fault that she wasn't as good with them as she was with her reflex ones, or even Pollux's powers because Pollux had explained them really good and she'd sort of figured out how to use them a little for when it counted.
Raising her hands to grip the side of the frame, Britt started to swing her legs down, ready to drop to her feet and return home, set on talking to one of the adults tomorrow to explain that she'd really like her powers back and she'd try harder to not use them for spying on people as much as she could unless she was asked to for a really good reason or something. Only her hand slipped on the cool metal, her legs already unhooking from the bar and legs dropping just as her grip went. She didn't even plan it, her back just twisted automatically, her torso going to the left, her hips going right as her legs braced and her hands went down, palms out to catch her weight on the ground, her hips twisting with a snap and changing trajectory to make her vault on her hands, back curving until she flipped from hands to feet, back to her hands in a cartwheel before coming to stand just left of the climbing frame. It happened in a matter of seconds and Britt was perfectly fine.
Staring at her hands, Britt felt a smile spread on her face. She could've done that with practice, sure. If it had been choreographed and she'd been working on it for a few days, it would've been simple. But in a spur of the moment, she'd have just landed on her butt. This, right here, this was her power; the one she really liked, the one she missed, her first one. Britt grinned to herself, arms hugging her body in the chilly air. Grabbing onto the top of the frame again, Britt pulled herself up onto the top, standing on the far side beam, steadying herself with her heel on one of the bars to start with before doing a back-hand stand and dropping her legs back on it. Her feet just naturally slotted themselves in to balance her and Britt laughed aloud before bending back to the other beam, grabbing it with her hands and swinging herself down and around, hooking her feet on the other side and then propelling herself out with a push to somersault into a perfect landing.
Bouncing on her heels, Britt clapped her hands happily. She had her Catwoman/BlackCat powers back!
She wanted to text Santana and tell her, wanted to see Artie to tell him that she'd got her old powers back, maybe he'd get his back soon too! But she wanted to have fun with this too, it'd been ages since she'd had her powers.
Crossing the road from the park, Britt remembered the scaffolding around the buildings that were still getting repaired from storm damaged and figured it was as good a place to start as any. She climbed the outside, swinging her legs up and using them to give her the momentum to climb, her body twisting and turning on instinct as she made her way over beam and bar and plank until she stood on the edge of the building. She was half thinking it was a bad idea, even as she was thinking about the CatWoman movie they made with Halle Berry, the ending of the film. Taking a breath, knowing it might end in her being a pretty, blond splattered mess on the ground below, Britt knelt to tighten her sneakers before straightening and just trusting her power -she had to start there or else she'd never master it.
She took off in a run, feet falling on the thin ledge until she reached the edge and she pushed off, leaping over the distance between one building and the next. She landed on the roof of the next building, tumbling into a roll as her body worked with the change and she levelled herself up with a spring from her arms, back flipping to her feet and running again, working with her weight on the next leap so that her momentum carried properly and she cartwheeled the space to land on her feet.
Each step just started to feel like second nature, her body processing the next move before her brain did and her feet and hands working before she thought to move, her weight distributing automatically to let her make each jump and not plummeting to her death.
By the time she stopped, Britt had no idea where she was, but she was on the edge of a slated roof, looking down at houses. She thought she recognised Puck's house, which meant she was on the wrong side of town for her own house, and that Quinn's was closer. Well, Quinn had invited her over earlier, maybe Britt could stop by and share the good news and in the morning, Quinn could drive her out to get her car by the park.
Still grinning, Britt used the guttering on the side of the building to slide down to the ground, running across the street and vaulting over a fence into a back yard to cross through some private property on the way to Quinn's house. She was totally glad that they'd taken away her X-ray vision and given her back her Catwoman/BlackCat powers.
