who? Ruby Maximoff & Stígandr Heimdallsen.
when? Back sometime during the trip to Attilan.
what? Ruby rescues Stig from some angry-looking guards. Then Stuff and Junk happens. ;D
Ruby wasn’t exactly sure what she had expected. Attilan was large, sure, but her father had been looking for her mother for so long that Ruby was sure the woman was neither on Earth nor Attilan. There was still something about being back there that had gotten her hopes up. The Inhumans were so insular, so firm in their belief that they were genetically superior. Ruby’s childhood had not been very pleasant, being a hybrid. Things were not as bad now and she had grown since she’d last been there--both in maturity and physical appearance. She walked with her chin high and her back straight. Ruby Maximoff was of the royal bloodline, though it was not a fact she touted. Ever. Acting as interpreter was sometimes exhausting when her own grasp of English faltered but she was pleased that she was useful. Some students were proving to be children and Ruby had to rein in her emotions lest she lose control of her powers. Being back in the palace, of all places, was a painful reminder of when she’d been there with her mother. No one could tell the girl where Crystal had last been seen and Ruby was afraid of asking if anyone knew if the woman was even alive. Unlike most of the guests, Ruby was allowed to travel on her own. It helped, at times, to be able to slip away and make her inquiries without anyone hovering over her shoulder. Footsteps approached and Ruby’s head came up quickly, only to see one of the palace guards hesitate in his stride before continuing on. “I will return when I wish to return,” Ruby said, in the Inhuman’s language. It had been her first tongue. The man’s jaw tightened and he continued on anyway, even as her eyes narrowed into a glacial stare. “Forgive me,” the man said tightly. “But there is a guest who has been separated and we would appreciate the assistance in explaining the need for him to return.” Ruby pressed her lips together for a moment and then nodded, gathering herself effortlessly. The guard led her down the hall and around a corner where she found Stig standing several heads higher than the guards gathered around him, pleading for him to return to the group. Ruby tried to not laugh, brushing past the gathering throng of people to take Stig’s arm. “This way,” she said, quietly, in English. She flashed a brilliant smile at the guards and gave them assurances in their language. “They get nervous when guests wander,” she informed the Asgardian. In some ways, Attilan reminded Stig of his homeland. One of the main differences was the fact it definitely wasn’t a place that could be found on Earth, what with the unique architecture that humans could only consider in their dreams. It was so distinctly not human, which made Stig love it all the more. The city was certainly majestic, just like Asgard. And then there was the view. Much like the view from Bifrost, Stig could see out over the vastness of space. Spending time on Earth, he had almost forgotten how many other worlds were out there and after seeing all the sights of the city, staring off into space had been one of his favorite activities. The view was equiset really. Sure, it was no Bifrost, but then again nothing in the universe was. It was his curiosity and wonder about the city that caused him to become separated from the group. One moment he was studying some carvings on a pillar and the next thing he knew there were guards surrounding him. Unable to understand what they were saying, Stig held up his hands in front of his chest to signal that he meant no harm as his tried to explain in both his native tongue and English that he meant no harm. Thankfully, a knight in shining armor came to his rescue. “Oh, Ruby. I am relieved to see you,” he whispered as he allowed himself to be lead away from the guards. “I only wanted to look at the carvings.” Ruby shook her head, a soft chuckle easily heard. "They are respectful of my cousin's guests," she said, glancing upward as she led Stig away from the guards that had gathered. "You were not in any danger as you were of peace." She hesitated at a juncture and seemed to ponder her options. "Would you like to see more? They will not bother us," Ruby went on, chewing lightly on her lower lip shyly. The shy moment lasted all of a couple seconds before the girl was back to what could be considered a regal bearing. Among the other students, Ruby probably did not come off as very warm or friendly. Among the Inhumans, she appeared to fit in visually--especially among the royal family, as much as they hated to admit to her being kin. “But it is best to leave them for now. Let them settle and calm. I can show you other carvings.” “Really? I was thinking my height made them nervous...” Or perhaps it was just that they were saying things in a foreign language that made them seem less than peaceful. “And I would love to see more of the carvings. The buildings in my homeland have similar features. So that is what I was looking at. I did not realized I had walked so far away from the group.” Okay. Maybe he did realize he had done that. “Come,” Ruby said pleasantly and she took his arm again to steer him. This time, her pace was less hurried since she was no longer trying to whisk him away from the guards but to show him more of the things she knew. It had been years since she’d even been on Attilan, much less in the palace, but there was something about certain races who were slow to change that some things would always remain familiar. She pointed out a few things before leading him to a balcony, leaning on the railing as though she belonged there. “My mother loved this view,” Ruby murmured. “She would sit me here and tell me stories. My father got nervous only one time. ‘What if she falls, Crystal?’ he asked and she laughed. She teased him that he should be fast enough to catch me before any harm came. I miss her laugh,” Ruby went on, turning her head to smile gently at Stig. “Are you enjoying yourself?” “My father did not get nervous about things like this. Then again Himinbjörg overlooked all the realms, so I do not think there was much point in worrying.” When you stared at the great abyss all day, worrying about your kid falling over the edge probably wasn’t one’s biggest concern. Or at least that made sense to Stig. “I am having a good time. It feels nice to be in a place that is closer to my home than Earth.” He then offered her a smile since he didn’t know what to say concerning her comment on her mother. “Attilan has been in many places,” Ruby said and turned so her back was to the railing instead. “On Earth, away from it, but it is always... home. One of them,” she said. Ruby lifted her hand to self-consciously tuck her hair back behind an ear. Teeth worried at her lower lip for a moment before she decided courage was fleeting if she let herself think too long. “Stig?” she asked, as though to get his attention. The instant she had it, Ruby moved and pulled him down--only a little--in order to kiss him. Her hand quickly released him again and she pulled back just enough to look up at him to try and better gauge his reaction. “Thank you for coming,” the girl said lamely. The kiss surprised him. Back on Earth there had been mild flirting, but nothing more considering the age difference would have looked bad to a lot of people. Despite his enjoyment of Ruby’s company, Stig had saw how badly people reacted to finding out about Billy and Luka, so he chose not to act on anything. He didn’t understand why though. Back in Asgard, a woman of Ruby’s age and intelligence would have been married by now or at least engaged. Sometimes he just didn’t understand Earth and its rules. However, they weren’t on Earth, so rather than answer Ruby with words Stig chose to lean back down and return her kiss with one of his own. |
