Ruby wasn’t usually one for mischief but she had her moments. There were a very select few that she felt comfortable enough around to relax her usually cool and stoic demeanor. She just didn’t know how to interact with her peers properly. She truly much preferred to be background scenery than a part of any of the little cliques that made up the student body. The snow had melted but it was still cold out and Ruby was dressed warmly with a fashionable scarf to protect her neck and a matching cap. One of the girl’s vices in life was fashion. She had to always have new and pretty clothes--and lately it had been a necessity that she shopped because she had grown over the past few months. Any excuse to use her father’s credit cards... She grinned to herself as she saw a familiar figure, walking down a path with his back to her and Ruby scooped up a handful of dirt and grass, lips pressed together to keep from laughing and giving herself away. Even as she stood straight and pulled her hand back, the pile in her hand had changed composition and she’d packed it carefully--into a snowball. She quickly threw the snowball at Stig’s back and laughed as it connected, breaking apart into nothing upon impact. Ruby grinned, hand over her mouth. Ahh, Midgard winters. While many people in this realm didn’t seem to enjoy the coldness, Stig sure did. It was nothing like the winters in his homeland, but he still enjoyed it even if the snow didn’t reach ten feet high. He was probably the only person in the school sad about the upcoming change of season too. On this particular brisk day, he found himself enjoying a walk around the campus after having returned from classes at Greymalkin. He could definitely hear people walking about him thanks to his excellent hearing, but didn’t really think anything of it. Or at least he didn’t until he was so viciously attacked with a snowball despite there being no snow on the ground. Whirling around, he expected to come face to face with another male student, perhaps even Ikram, but found himself surprised to see Ruby. “Ruby,” he started as he took a few steps forward, his lips smiling the entire time. “I do not suppose you can tell me what just hit my back?” Ruby's eyes widened in mock innocence and she shook her head mutely. When her lips parted to deny her involvement, a giggle escaped instead. "Curious thing," she said, the touch of her Bulgarian accent as present as ever. "It looked like a snowball but there is no snow on the ground!" The dirt on her fingers gave her away, of course. She grinned suddenly and stooped, graceful as always, and had yet another snowball in her hand by the time she straightened. There was laughter in her eyes as she made no attempt to hide her intent--and threw the ball of created snow at his chest. "Strange weather, you would agree?" Ruby laughed. “It is a curious situation, yes,” he answered with a nod of agreement. By now he was standing in front of her and Stig used his height to look down upon her. “And it is very strange weather. This like that do not even happen in my home land.” Ruby just grinned and looked up at him, unintimidated--very few people at the school were so much taller than she was. “Is not there a land of ice?” she asked, the grin faltering as she struggled to remember the stories she’d been told. Ruby suddenly looked unsure and chewed on her lower lip. “I do not know enough of Asgard, I admit.” But she was willing to learn and oh how she was willing to listen to him tell her whatever he wanted to share. “What was your favorite place?” “Yes, but random snowballs from nothing? It is even a bit odd for their.” Now things like Ice Giants and what not? That wasn’t so odd. “My favorite place was my father’s home at the end of Bifrost. Though I am a bit biased considering that is where I spent most of my time when I was younger.” Ruby shook her head. “Not nothing. Everything comes from something,” she explained. “That is how my powers work. Exchange one material for another.” She pressed her lips together briefly, a little nervous suddenly. Ruby still wasn’t the best conversationalist. “If you spent much time there... did you see many things?” And conversations would be a lot easier if they had a shared language that wasn’t English. “That is a very impressive power, Ruby. Amazing even.” Stig resisted asking if she could literally turn straw into gold. After all, he didn’t want to look like he was a gold digger here or anything. “You can see all of the Nine Realms at the end of Bifrost. My sight is not as good as my fathers, but yes. I have seen a lot.” She blushed at the compliment, pleased. “There is another student here with similar power, if not the same. But he is... it is untrained. I hope to help him.” Ruby couldn’t imagine being able to see into other realms, other worlds, from a single vantage point. “Have you visited all of the realms?” came her next question. The Asgardians were sources of intrigue for the girl; there weren’t many other races at the school who weren’t actually just mutant or human--Earthlings, most of them, when it came down to it. “Well. I knew about you first, so yours remain the most impressive to me,” he answered with a smile. Also, Ruby was a lady, so she was more interesting to Stig by default. “And no, I have not. Only three of them. I would not be welcome in all of them.” That earned a laugh. Ruby did not believe her skill to be all that impressive but she was also not the type to be overly confident. It was a strange thing, actually, considering how she presented herself. But when he spoke of not being welcome in all of the realms, her smile faltered and Ruby’s arms came up to hug herself without thinking. “I can understand that,” she said, quietly. “Apologies. We do not have to speak of that, then.” She noted the dirt still clinging to her fingers and absently brushed it off against her sleeve. “But you enjoy... Midgard? Earth. Yes?” When all he could do was hear and see far beyond that of humans, it was indeed impressive. So many possibilities could be had with a power like that. “No need to apologize. I do not know many people who would want to hang out with fire demons on a regular basis.” Or giants. Or elves. Or dwarves. It really wasn’t anything to be sorry about all things considered. “And yes. I do enjoy Midgard and the people who live here.” “I wonder if Attilan is considered part of Midgard,” Ruby said, absently. “It has been in a few places.” She peered up at Stig again, still finding the motion a little strange and loving it. “Do you enjoy anyone here in particular?” Ruby asked, trying to be stealthy--did he have a girlfriend? Stig thought about it for a moment. “I am really not sure on that. I will have to ask my father next time I see him,” he admitted. He supposed it would have to given it wasn’t part of the other realms, though Heimdall would know for certain. “No one in particular at the moment, no. Perhaps some day though.” That cheered her, more than Ruby would have liked to admit. “Someday,” she echoed and ducked her head so he wouldn’t see the ridiculous smile that had eased into place. “If you are not busy, would you like to get ice cream? It is still cold out and it is fun to see the strange looks I get. Vidin was much colder in the winter than it is here. It does not bother me as much as it does others.” “People here do not know what real cold is, right?” With his statement, he flashed her a big smile because he assumed Ruby knew what he was referring to was true. Stig was fairly certain it hadn’t gotten below zero the entire time this winter. “Well. I am not busy at the moment...” “Most do not, no,” Ruby agreed. When she looked up, he was smiling and she returned it. “That is two of us. We should go be busy. Getting ice cream,” she said and took a step back, angling herself as though to head back toward the school. “Yes?” “Yes. Busy getting ice cream,” he answered as he followed her lead and started to walk back toward the school. |
