who Bex Lebeau & Julianne Keller
when Tuesday, March 5 after school.
what Jak wanted rubies so Bex got her rubies! The girls steal a ruby necklace from a large department store and run. SURPRISE TWIST: Bex thought the necklace would be for Jak, but Jak has a very different idea. There's also kissing.
Sitting breathless against the side of a wall down an alley, Jak held a hand to her chest, feeling her heartbeat push out against its cage after the whirlwind adventure she had. Bex was beside her, she could feel the other girl’s presence from her powers still wrapping around them, keeping them safe and secure. They were running from the law, or the hired law, or some kind of law at Neiman Marcus, where they had just shoplifted some very pricey pieces of jewelry. It made her feel very Ocean’s Eleven, which could explain why she demanded they wear blazers and beanies, and why her long hair had been tucked up inside hers and she had put on glasses with false lenses. Jak hadn’t wanted her image to be caught, this was a store her mother had been known to go to, and besides, it felt so much cooler dressing up to go hold a jewel heist.
“Oh my god, Bex,” she finally gasped, peeking around the brick wall to check, double check, and then a third time for safety. “I think we’re clear. There’s no one there besides a lady and her poodle. Ew, it’s pooping!” a little disgusted, but still running on adrenaline, she pulled back and reached for Bex’s hand, giving it a fair squeeze and her a wide smile.
“Are you okay? you are not hurt, yeah? no injuries? the baby?” she began checking, squeezing Bex’s arms and patting her belly, at least as much as she could. “No boo-boos?”
Bex was huddled up her blazer and jeans, her hands gloved. She wore her beanie on top of a high-quality blonde wig that she’d borrowed from Mark. As cool and above-it-all as she attempted to look she couldn’t help grinning as she glanced over at Jak. “No---no, sugar, I’m fine, quit jostlin’.” She was an expert at this, but big ticket items weren’t usually her style. She’d shoplift her clothes, or other necessary items, just to keep her skills up, but Jak had wanted jewelry, so Bex pulled for jewelry.
She let out a breath, slumping against the wall and laughing. “You ain’t no goody two-shoes, Jak Keller. I done misjudged you so hard, I never even----jewels? You got more money than God and here you wanna steal jewels.”
Concern abated for now, she sat back and kicked her legs out, trying to will the adrenaline out. This was the first heist she had ever done, the first law breaking (well, besides drinking) and the first time she had ever, ever, stolen something, which she didn’t count as a heist. They were different. It had been terrifying to walk into the store ahead of time alone, she remembered forcing Bex to hold her hand while they went up to the lady and the story about wanting to buy her something pretty for her 18th birthday. Jak had crafted the story ahead of time: one year anniversary was soon, got into a big named college, needed something.
“Hey! I... there are things you do not know about me, and sometimes money is not everything,” she defended. Tomas was the money spender, Jak was the one was a little more conservative. “And you said you could, and you did, and we have! Besides, asking for a sweater would have been boring.”
Bex slid down the wall to sit, taking a moment to take off her wig and shove it into her blazer. “So?” she asked, glancing over. She was grinning, still gasping for breath. As cool as she tried to look, her heart was still pounding and she was still feeling the rush. She looked fresh-faced and bright, abandoning her trademark black eyeliner to make herself less recognizable. “How does it feel, Jak?”
“I feel like my heart is going to explode!” It was a different rush than completing a Danger Room scenario or training with Eirena or even with Adam. It was exciting and new and she loved it. “Is this how you always feel after? So excited and wam and like the world is your oyster and you are on top of it?” she asked, with a wild look to her that was brighter than usual. “Is this why you do this?”
Bex laughed quietly. “It sounds like you just got fucked,” she said. She nudged Jak with her elbow. “And I do it because … it’s the family business. My dad taught me, I learned from him. As far as I know I’m the only one who’s kept up with it, and my parents might kill me if they knew, but I don’t really care, since they got a long, long list of things to kill me for.”
"Well! If that is what sex is like, sign me up!" She laughed, nudging Bex back. "Your family business is much cooler than mine, and more fun. Way, way more fun. Speaking of, have you still got it?"
Bex snorted. “No, I fed it to that pooping poodle back there.” Taking a glance out of the alley, she reached back into her blazer pocket. She pulled out a jeweled necklace, silver and what Bex assumed were rubies. She didn’t do jewelry, so she really didn’t know. “This has gotta be the most expensive shit I’ve ever lifted,” she breathed. “What the hell do you do with somethin’ like this, anyway?”
Scooting up against Bex, Jak gingerly held her hands out under the necklace and turned it without touching. The rubies caught light and sparkled. "Because it is beautiful and not something I would normally wear," she breathed, in awe that Bex had actually done this
But Jak wasn't going to wear it. "Keep it. For your baby. Consider it an investment for her. From her mother and fairy godmother."
Bex swallowed hard. It was something of a twisted sentiment, given that it was stolen goods, but for someone like Bex, that didn’t matter. Half of what she owned, she’d stolen. And Jak wanted … oh. She blinked away tears, sniffling awkwardly as she tried to cover up her tears. “That’s. That’s one of the nicest things somebody’s said to me,” she said weakly.
Honestly, she wasn’t all that good with words. She argued before she reasoned, she lashed out before she used logic. So right now, when she couldn’t express herself in words, she did the first thing that came to mind to properly explain how she felt.
She leaned in and lightly, softly, kissed Jak on the mouth.
Jak wanted Bex's child to have a good future, and even if she planned to be there to help and assist and do what she could, it might not be enough. Jewels never lost value.
Being kisses took her by surprise though not in a bad way. Jak indulged Bex for as long as she thought touching her was safe before breaking and enveloping her friend in a bear hug. There were no words for how happy it made her to know that her future niece would have something so pretty.
"You know I want to be in the delivery room now, yes?" She informed, smoothing down Bex's fly a way hairs.
Bex was looking a little pale and felt a bit lightheaded. The contact meant an immediate transfer of power----if Jak wasn’t careful, she’d charge something by accident and blow it up. By the time Jak pulled away, she was starting to feel dizzy. It didn’t stop her from grinning. “You’re the one who’s bein’ closest to me in all this, you know that? I got Jay, he’s bein’ good, but … you really seem like you care. In a good way. You’re positive, and I don’t even know what to do with that.”
"I believe in you, that is why." She did. Jak believed Bex could do this. She could be a mom and raise a child, even as young as she was, as long as she desired it. "You look like you need some water though. Did I take too much?"
Bex smiled crookedly. “A little,” she admitted. “But it was worth it.” She reached out and touched Jak’s lips with gloved fingertips. “Not gonna lie, I could go for more of that.” She was teasing, but Bex wanted what she couldn’t have----physical contact meant more to her than anything else, and as a result she really didn’t save herself for anyone. If she liked someone, she wanted to touch them. End of story.
Giggling (she loved the attention, but she knew it was just that) Jak gave Bex another hard squeeze. “You are higher than me off adrenaline, I think, yeah? Here, let me see the necklace.”
Bex placed the necklace in Jak’s hands before slumping against the wall and just letting herself breathe. She needed a little recovery time from the kiss, needed to let her energy come back. God, she hated her powers.
Polishing off the finger prints with her sleeve, Jak had to admire the beauty of the necklace. Emil had gotten her a lovely ruby ring that currently sat on the nightstand, but this. This was lovely. Carefully, she undid the clasp and then leaned over Bex, lifting the girl’s head from the wall to connect it in the back and letting it settle on it’s own to her chest.
“There. A safe place until later, I think.”
Bex looked down at the necklace, blushing. “Shit. This ain’t that gaudy, is it? I was gonna say I look stupid in it, but... it ain’t that bad. I almost like it. Almost.”
“For now it will do. I think diamonds would be much more you, but I think we should save that heist for later.” Yes, later. Jak was finding that she liked the adrenaline rush, the drive, the fear and pumping blood, the excitement. “Maybe for your birthday? We have a couple months to find the right thing.”
Bex smirked a little bit, looking up to meet Jak’s eyes. “For my birthday? Julianne Keller, did I just give you a taste for breakin’ the law?” She wasn’t sure whether to feel proud or terrible. Jak was just another girl, really, and a rich girl, but Bex sort of saw her like a magical, glittery fairy who came in and worked her magic and ran off. Now, she was impressed that Jak had a wild side, but was beginning to consider what a bad influence she was.
Jak couldn't help but laugh. Bex had just given her a new outlet, something that was wild and fun and dangerous, but she wasn't planning on making a habit of it. "No, goose. We can save this for special occasions."
“So you celebrate with thievery. You can’t tell me you didn’t enjoy this. You’ve got an inner bad girl and you just ain’t lettin’ it show through. Underneath all those pretty pink dresses you wanna steal and drink and make out with all the boys,” Bex teased, snickering.
Shrugging, Jak pressed against Bex’s side, getting snuggling in the alley. “Maybe? Maybe not. I like the excitement. Please, don’t tell anyone, but I have taken on extra training with Ms Wilson and I am most likely taking power training on with someone else. I want to go to space. I want to help people.”
Bex leaned back to look down at her, a bemused smile on her face. “Yeah? You wanna go to space? Be a space-ranger? Save aliens from other aliens?”
“That, and fun. I want excitement and to do something new. I would always come back, but I want to see the stars. Don’t you?”
Bex leaned back and looked up toward the sky. “I dunno,” she admitted. “I can see them from here. I feel like I ain’t seen enough of this world before I go explorin’ other ones. I got a long list of things I wanna do...”
She trailed off, looking away. “I just. Yeah. Maybe none of that’s gonna happen now.”
“That can still happen, Bex,” she gave her arm a reassuring squeeze. “I will make sure you go places. My family, we go somewhere every summer. This year you will go, too, and I will not hear you say otherwise.”
Bex raised her eyebrows. “Are you whiskin’ me away to your own private island? Seriously?”
“...We do not have a private island, but the concept is the same, yes!”
“Bitch, are you kiddin’ me?” Bex was trying not to grin. The offer was a lot, and nobody had ever done anything like that for her before. She had a lot of anger, and had a lot of walls up, and nobody really offered her nice things. Jak’s treatment of her was really very new and Bex didn’t know what to do with it.
“You think I’m kidding? Please. Ask Tomas. We go somewhere every summer. This time, you’ll come too. Maybe a few others, I will find out if Warren’s family has an island or not, or if we can all rent one.” Yes, rent an island. This was a possibility. “Then you will see how much of an influence you have been on me,” Jak chided and gave Bex a nudge with her knee.
“All right. Deal. You take me on your vacation, and I’ll... enjoy it,” said Bex, scrunching her nose. She pushed her hand back through her hair. “You wanna get goin’ before the cops come get us?”
“Yay!” Jak did a double take back to Bex on ‘cops.’ Oh, right, they just stole jewels. “Yes! Come on, we can stop by my parents place and get food before we head back. No one will know.”
Bex got up, wobbling a little bit. “Shit. Okay. I’m still a little from that kiss; damn, girl.” She slumped, leaning against Jak. “Let’s bounce, sugar.”
