TO-DAY'S GOSSIP: THE WITCHES AND WIZARDS OF HOGWARTS
By the Book. Without the responsibility of any classes or club sponsorships to date, Miss Viola Fawcett is generally available to deal with the needs of any Muggleborn students or the difficulties their families may face. It seems a rather lonely existence for a young woman. But she has been seen hurrying in and out of one particular area of the school more frequently than the rest. Perhaps her students need extra tutelage in the library, or perhaps Miss Fawcett herself requires additional assistance from the books, if not their custodian. A Gentler Touch? After the first week of classes, only one student has abandoned Ancient Runes in pursuit of other subjects – a marked drop from last year! Are this year’s third years a tougher breed? Or has Professor Ramsay finally listened to criticism and softened his sharp tongue? Out of Season. New Hogwarts appointment Professor Galatea Merrythought has been observed demonstrating a new sartorial style - sans sleeves and, often, without a shawl as well. The fashion, she maintains, frees her arms for spellcasting fluency, but one can't help wondering how she'll maintain the freedom as the year progresses. Who will flinch first: winter or the Professor? A Hogwarts Dynasty. The Sorting Hat had a pleasant surprise for Professor Milton Laughton this term when it awarded his granddaughter into his custody: very good news after his first grandchild was sorted Gryffindor two years ago. As the Professor's niece has also joined the staff at Hogwarts, all eyes are on the young girls to see whether the academic inclination has passed into the third generation of the family. Both girls are expected to live up to the high standard the Professor has set without difficulty, and his elder granddaughter shows promise at Gobstones as well, to her grandfather's delight. | Professor and Noted Author Oscar 'Bellerophon' Higgs-Quigley
A Night-time Adventure. Fans of noted author Bellerophon Higgs-Quigley missed quite a spectacle two weeks ago, according to current rumor. Sources in Hogsmeade claim that the author and adventurer went on a wild midnight ride with an unknown companion over the Irish Sea in a flying Muggle steam car, detouring to defend England from a pirate ship along the way. A Mysterious Companion? In the wake of Mr Higgs-Quigley’s recent adventure, there is speculation that his silence on the matter might suggest he has something to hide…perhaps the identity of his mysterious passenger? A lightkeeper in Wales swears he caught a glimpse of the gentlewitch’s white scarf as the couple flew overhead to their destination across the sea (in a direction one cannot help but notice points to the Higgs-Quigley family home), but no-one knows yet who the lucky lady might have been. A Secret Correspondence. Any traveler must know the delight of an owl from overseas, the rejoicing when one can hear and share the words of a distant loved one. Yet Miss Evelyn Seymour seemed to take little joy in the dirty, ragged bird that arrived at her window in the early hours of the morning, only to be shooed away immediately, bereft of its burden. One can only wonder who in Miss Seymour’s acquaintance would own such a tawdry bird – and what Miss Seymour could possibly have to say to such a person! | A Rival Removed? Gentlemen of society have been heard to express a certain relief that the competition of young Parkinson has been removed from their midst... and alarm that a cadre of young men taught to dance by same might soon be released upon them! Resting In Peace. Professor Cuthbert Binns was laid to rest by an intimate circle of friends and family this past Sunday in Mould-on-the-Wold. The History of Magic class at Hogwarts, however, is reported to remain under his tutelage. Will Hogwarts find a replacement for Professor Binns, or will he be used as the Ministry’s first trial over whether spirits have the right to teach classes? One wonders how the school is handling the matter of his salary—if nothing else, they must be saving money on room and board. A Transmutation of Intentions? Mr Armando Dippet has put himself forth as a leading alchemist and contender for this year’s Emerald Tablet Prize—not with an alkahest to extinguish Fiendfyre, as was formerly reported, but with his successful distillation of merpeople’s tears. Does this change in study signify a lingering attachment to Miss Ismeria McQuillen, now Headmistress at Hogwarts, whose own past work once involved the element of water? Could mermaid’s tears be a message to Miss McQuillen that Mr Dippet does not wish to extinguish the flames after all?
