Miss Fawcett’s position was created this year by the Ministry in order to manage the high number of Muggleborns and foreigners now being introduced into what was once Britain’s pre-eminent educational institution. Miss Fawcett is not the only new member joining the ranks of Hogwarts’ professorial staff. The essential foundation class of Magical Etiquette and Comportment, so necessary to the prospects of those graduating from Hogwarts’ once-elite ranks, is being taught by two new teachers, one of whom has only been teaching for a year, and neither of whom are known to have experience at similar institutions. They are also the youngest of the staff, having graduated a mere seven years prior. With such an insignificant age gap, one might well ask if they will be teaching any of their former classmates this term. At least, it can be supposed, the lessons will be fresh enough in their memories. The same may not be said of the Professor of Defence and the Dark Arts, who adds to the sum of foreign witches and wizards taking advantage of England’s superior magical tuition and traveling abroad from their native lands to crowd and clog British schools. What precisely the new professor will be teaching, and what was taught in her own country as acceptable and moral magic regarding the dark arts, has yet to be learned. Also bringing foreign tutorial practices to Hogwarts is Evelyn Seymour, graduate of the Lüftekönig School of Alchemy and Mystical Arts in Vienna, Austria, Potions Mistress and perhaps the saving grace of this year’s new appointments to Hogwarts, in spite of the relative insignificance of technique and discipline to her subject. Professor Seymour is a breath of fresh air after the unlamented former Professor Gobel, and it is much hoped that she will bring all the charm of Austria to this season’s balls. Might it be too much to hope for a waltz? This will be the second year of Ismeria McQuillen’s reign as Hogwarts Headmistress, and her first year of appointing new staff. We cannot say that it is an auspicious or particularly dignified beginning. |
