I miss you all so terribly! Even Mr. Bennet has commented upon your absence. He mentioned that the house is much quieter without Kitty and Lydia around, but for the life of me, I don’t understand what he means. What fun you must be having! I wish you would write me to tell me all about it.
I so wish that we could have gone with you. You know I wish to have a trip of my own. It would do my nerves a world of good, but you know Mr. Bennet would hear none of it! He would rather sit in his study, and not be bothered. As if I bother him! Oh how that man does enjoy vexing me! He has no compassion for my nerves.
Now, please be quick to reply on how your stay has been going. Tell me about the fine gentleman you have danced with, and number of balls! Of course also the number of proposals you have received:
Jane, please tell me you are already engaged! You are far too beautiful to not attract a suitor in such a short time. You must do everything you can to secure a match! You know because of your father’s dreadful cousin, we will be turned out of our home when your father dies! You must be secure in your future happiness, my dear. If at all possible, try to lower the bust of your gown. There is nothing wrong with trying to be a little more alluring and you are so modest.
Lizzie, I do hope you are behaving yourself and keeping your opinions to yourself. Mr. Bennet would like me to tell you that he misses you and your good sense. How rude of him to only think of one of his girls when all five of them have gone out into the world without us, it is so unfeeling! I worry every day that you will not find husbands, and then where will we be? Mrs. Lucas has informed me that Miss Lucas has set off for Summerview Park, so you will be happy to see your companion again. But Lizzie, please do try to secure a husband. I know you are not as pretty as Jane, but I am sure someone will want to marry you. Just smile and agree to dance, and then you can speak your mind once there is a ring on your finger!
Mary, please stop spending the whole time in the library with your nose in a book. Men do not like women that are too bookish. You might not be as pretty as Jane and Lizzie, but you have other qualities that could recommend you. I cannot think of them right now, but I flaunt what you do best!
Lydia, my dear sweet girl, I think I miss you most of all! I can imagine you having such a good time. Are there any officers at Summerview? I am sure you are their favourite, as well as the rest of the Gentleman there. Now you must not steal any suitors away from Jane! Enjoy yourself, and please let me know at the earliest when you’ve secured a proposal!
That is all the motherly advice I have for now! Oh how I wish I could be there with you. We would secure proposals for you all within a week I am sure if I was there. Mr. Bennet is so cruel that we could not stay nearby! Your Aunt, Mrs. Phillips, has come to visit me and console me, but I am not to be consoled! I am anxious for word from all of you. It has been weeks and I have heard nothing!
Oh and Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner sent their regards to you Lizzie, and hope to see you soon for a tour of the lake district unless you are then married, and then they will extend the invitation to your husband as well.
Yours,
Mama
P.S. Oh and Kitty. I nearly forgot! Just do everything that Lydia does, and you’ll both secure a husband in no time.
