Life was nothing if not unpredictable and hard to keep with at times. Sam knew that fact rather intimately given what had happened to him but since coming to Summerview it had been one surprising turn of events after another. First he’d found employment in his chosen career, the second he’d found a really cool housemate, and now the third was the sudden and unexpected arrival of an old friend, the same old friend who had been the one to turn him. It was definitely enough to give a guy whiplash. Some days Sam wasn’t able to settle and today was that sort of day. He’d woken early, earlier than either Clara and Kanuna, and set off into the ocean in the hopes of fighting against the tide would help work off some of his more restless energy. He’d been in the ocean for an hour or more before he finally broke surface near the beach, hands catching on his wet dark strands to comb them back from his face before barefooted and clad in dark swim shorts he wandered over to snag on the towel he’d discarded on the sand. He felt better but still, Sam just need to shake whatever this was off, towel rubbing through his hair. Resting on the beach (and effectively getting her daily dose of tea by people-watching) was like a cozy hug for Nerissa. Just being beneath the sun and the way the waves washed the sands in white lace - it was soothing, especially for a creature of the sea such as her. It helped that she had her cottage right on the beach too, and could open any window to breathe in that briny aroma. Right now she was wandering outside - her gargoyle mate perched on her roof during the day, still as stone in the form he was, and he was there to protect the place. Keep an eye on things. Sometimes before she left for work she’d take a stroll, barefoot and wearing a breezy sundress - her sunglasses slid down her nose, and dark, reptilian eyes took in the sight of some dude emerging from a refreshing dip. “Hey, hot stuff,” she called, waving. “Nice beach day, isn’t it?” Closer, closer, she slithered. Yeah, she was nosy as fuck but whatever - there were so many new people lately, she liked to see if they were new-new or just people that left Summerview and then came back for whatever dramatic reason, so she was thusly supposed to remember them. Sam turned his head mid hair ruffle when he heard a voice and then traced it to a pretty brunette who was heading in his direction and waving. “Yeah, it’s a really nice beach day. Water isn’t too cold either.” It was cold but definitely not freezing and the shock of the coolness against his overly warm skin had been the jarring impact he’d been looking for. He rubbed the towel over his ams and then left it draped around his neck, sort of relieved that he was facing her instead of away from her because he was still coming to terms with the marks he had on his lower back and well lower. “Sam,” he offered a moment later with hand extended. “Yo, Sam, I’m Nerissa,” she replied, shaking his hand. Sea serpents didn’t usually have hands, so all these very ‘people’ customs were so fun to her. It was also slightly more difficult to greet someone when you were sixty feet long - or communicate in general. The human-looking meatsuit had its uses. “I’ve been in town since its inception, basically. And have always lived on the beach.” She sort of had to, but that was just an aside. No complaints - she’d managed to, during her long years, strike a balance between oceanic immersion and land-lubber life. “You’re new, yeah? Unless you left when you were this tall - “ Her hand stooped down to indicate knee-high level, “...and just came back?” Apparently some people did. They just looooooooved this quaint little insane asylum that much, they couldn’t stay away. Since its inception? Wow, that must mean she was… super old, but honestly she looked good for it. “Not a bad place to have lived all your life.” Definitely worse places to have made home. Of course home was always out of reach for Sam as he’d left all of that behind when he’d been turned but at least a small piece of it had found him in Summerview. He chuckled and shook his head as he slipped the towel around his hips and using that privacy to shimmy out of his swim shorts before crouching to rummage in his bag for his underwear. “No, nothing like that. I came here fully grown.” Aw, man. No free show? Well, the towel-over-the-junk dance, to get rid of the swim trunks, was entertaining enough all on its own. Nerissa grinned cheekily, hello fangs. “Welcome to town, then,” she said, pushing her sunglasses up on the bridge of her nose. “How’re you liking it so far?” It was quaint, and cute, and supposed to be pretty low-key. And yet Summerview had a way of attracting rejects that probably wouldn’t last in bigger sanctuary cities - you know, in one where they’d have a worse time trying to be the center of attention. At least here there was that whole ‘big fish, small pond’ thing going on in the minds of some. Sam glanced up in time to catch the fangs now very firmly on display and concluded in that moment that she definitely wasn’t a vampire because a) she didn’t smell like one and b) it was the day and she wasn’t smoking so that just begged the question of what was she exactly? Fingers snagged on his underwear and the dark cotton material was eased on over both legs until the waistband was left to snap into place around his hips and now the towel could be used to further dry his hair. “It’s not too bad, definitely more interesting than some of the places I’ve lived in before.” Which was something of an understatement but the point still stood. “Of course nowhere I’ve lived before has this many supernaturals in the same place.” “You know what they say - may you live in interesting times,” Nerissa snorted, referring to the ancient Chinese proverb. Or curse, as it were. Describing Summerview as ‘interesting’ seemed to fit the bill though. “There are bigger sanctuary cities with lots of supernatural types mixed in with humans but I guess this one does have a certain appeal to it. It has the barrier, for one thing.” The only humans that could even see the island were those of the ‘gifted’ variety - your regular mundane Mary Sue couldn’t accidentally stumble across this bit of land. Which was good, in a way, but probably more of an inconvenience for species who needed human blood or life force to survive - they had to always venture off the island for meals, as she knew that hunting was discouraged here. Wouldn’t be much of a hunt though anyway, if you asked her. “Where are you from?” she asked curiously, picking up a shell from the sand and dusting it off. “Or are you more of a wanderer?” Sam bent down again to snag his fingers in the waist and of his jeans and started to pull them on one leg at a time. “Probably more of a wanderer these days given that I’ve moved around a lot since leaving home.” So many cities. So many passing connections. It wasn’t until he hit Summerview that he actually felt like he could let his guard down and settle some. “What brings you to the beach today?” Sam fastened his jeans to his hips then reached for his t-shirt. The sooner he could cover scar tissue the better. Hey, no worries here, despite any scarring this guy was still hot as fuck in Nerissa’s book - she even did her best to not stare blatantly, and that was a mighty huge effort, trust her. “I actually live on the beach,” she shared, and motioned idly toward the direction of her snazzy cottage - it was just ‘up the ways away,’ she didn’t have geographical coordinates or anything. “Sea serpent,” she added, since it was no secret about what she was. Some species were so cagey about it - unicorns, sometimes, and she guessed she could see why. They were supposed to be rare, and they were hunted often. “I’m not usually this...small.” The meatsuit was just for convenience’s sake. And it sure fit the bill. If she wandered around as a gigantic snake, she likely wouldn’t have many friends at all. Sea serpent? Huh. That was a new one to Sam, but it explained the scent he’d been getting and he mentally filed it away in case he needed it again for future reference. He was also getting the feeling she might be checking him out but he could be reading the situation wrong, it had been a while after all. Not that he was complaining, she was a very beautiful woman after all, fangs and all. “That would make sense,” Sam agreed with a small smirk. “Good to be close to the water and I definitely wouldn’t complain about living near the ocean.” He idly wondered just how big she was in her natural form but that might be something of a personal question for their first meeting. He slid the t-shirt on and then tugged it down. “I’m a wolf, but you might have already clocked that.” “Eh, it’s nice to get confirmation. I mean, you’ve got kind of a wolfy smell but I don’t like to make assumptions. You never can tell around here,” was Nerissa’s wise bit of advice, and it was true. There were all sorts of hybrids going on - it seemed better to get it straight from the horse’s mouth. Or the wolf’s mouth. She loved living on the beach though. It was perfect - the foaming waves, the sticky air, the salty water! Who didn’t love it? Besides vampires or folks who otherwise didn’t care for sand up the ass crack. “But you know, just FYI, I work at the spa,” she added, always looking for new clients. “Come find me for some bacteria-killing or exfoliating or healing.” She had some products that diminished scars too, but she wouldn’t bring that up like all obvious and shit. “New person discount. I usually do that.” “You know what I was actually thinking I need to get a full body massage booked in after the full moon because that shit hurts,” Sam admitted with a wry smile. “Not the same as bacteria-killing, exfoliating or healing, but I think it’s worth looking into.” Even if Kanuna was under the impression that a long very hard run was exactly what was needed after a full moon. He’d tried it once and wasn’t sure that was a solution to all the ensuing aches and pains. “So I’ll definitely check out the spa.” “Oh, awesome!” Nerissa visibly brightened, all lit up like a Christmas tree. She loved when people - men especially - took her up on her offer to come and see what good her services could do for them (that sounded bad). But it was much better than dudes acting like they were too macho to get a fucking pedicure, or folks looking at her as if she had six heads. Treating yourself, y’all - it wasn’t that difficult of a concept to grasp. She felt sorry for the ones who never heard of such a thing. “I do full body massages, so sure, I’ll work out the kinks,” she slid her sunglasses down her nose again, offering a wink. “We can kill a few birds with one stone - do some exfoliating and massage and bacteria-killing.” “Yeah?” Sam asked before he ducked his head, hand rubbing through the dark strands before he glanced up at Nerissa through his lashes. “You think you’ll have any availability this coming weekend?” Worth a shot especially as he definitely could do with a full body massage as after the full moon coupled with a few long sessions in the shop he could definitely feel the ache in his back and arms. Even if Nerissa didn’t have availability, she’d make room for Sam-wolf. She imagined it must be hellaciously painful to contort and twist your body into a furry creature every full moon - like, bones breaking and reforming and shit. Not pretty. But luckily, she had some openings. “Sure do,” she nodded. “How about Saturday afternoon? I can pencil you in.” Sam nodded. “Yeah, Saturday afternoon would be great. Definitely pencil me in.” He definitely hadn’t expected to run into anyone on the beach let alone a beautiful woman who also specialised in massages so honestly his day was looking up. He crouched down and shoved his shoes back into the bag he’d brought with him and figured he’d walk barefoot up until the point he no longer could. “I look forward to it.” "Me too, Sambo! It was awesome meeting you," Nerissa waved, deciding to run along and be on her merry way too - she'd continue her walk on the beach before heading home to change and get ready for work. Like, she wouldn't literally run along because she was barefoot and running on sand was hard. So fuck that noise. A leisurely stroll and some more being nosy, yep, that sounded like a good plan to her. |
